.SYNOPSIS...
A cold front will continue to move offshore through early this
evening. High pressure will gradually build into the area over
the weekend even as a new low pressure system develops off the
coast. That system will move further off the coast Monday before
a weak low pressure system crosses the region Tuesday into
Tuesday night. Brief high pressure will follow Wednesday before
another system approaches for the end of next week.

&&

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TODAY/...
Stratocu deck remains over the area as of 1AM as a potent upper
level wave is rounding the base of the long wave trough as it
reaches the east coast. The clouds have been holding persistent
and thick and likely will linger through this afternoon as a
look at BUFKIT soundings indicates moisture trapped under an
inversion. In addition, strong cold advection with northwest
flow is aiding to maintain the cloud cover. The inversion should
gradually lift this afternoon and alleviate some of the cloud
cover, though some clouds will remain as we're on the outer periphery
of the low. It's quite brisk out there tonight actually as some
sites across the Lehigh Valley and Poconos are in the low 30s
and gusting to 35 mph resulting in teens to even some single
digit wind chills. Lows tonight will reach the upper 20s/low
30s.

Low pressure system will develop out at sea along the old
frontal boundary. Winds are expected to remain gusty into
Saturday as the low starts to take shape offshore. By this
afternoon, generally expect north to northwest winds around
10-15 mph gusting 25-30 mph with some gusts up to 30 or so mph
possible. Otherwise it remains dry but chilly (actually close to
average) for tonight and Saturday with lows tonight mainly in
the 20s to low 30s and highs Saturday mainly in the 35 to 40
degree range (except upper 20s to low 30s over the southern
Poconos.

.SHORT TERM /TONIGHT THROUGH MONDAY/...
The developing coastal low along the stalled frontal boundary
offshore will generally track northeastward approximately 250-300mi
east of our coastline Saturday night into Sunday. With the upper
level trough taking its time moving east and high pressure building
across much of the Ohio Valley, we will certainly remain dry for the
remainder of the weekend. As of now, it does appear that the low
will track just far enough offshore that areas west of I-95 will see
improving sky conditions Saturday night with mostly sunny skies for
the majority of Sunday. For areas east of I-95 down to the coast,
there will at least be a mid to upper level cloud deck on Sunday
morning, but as the system moves away from our coast, increasing
sunshine is expected by early to mid afternoon. Expecting highs
generally in the low to mid 40s; with potential cooler
temperatures closer to the coast due to cloud cover and limited
diurnal heating. The main story for Saturday night into Sunday
will be the potential for gusty winds due to a rather sharp
pressure gradient between features across the region. Gusts up
to 25-35mph are expected with highest winds found across the
higher terrain and coastal areas.

With the coastal low moving away Sunday night and Monday, upper
level ridge will slide eastward as surface high moves overhead. This
will allow winds to ease throughout the overnight hours Sunday into
Monday. As of now, it does appear that there will still be enough of
a NW'ly flow at the surface where we do not expect radiational
cooling to occur despite clear skies. Lows Sunday night will be
pretty close to average for mid-January with temps in the low to mid
20s. Monday will feature sunny skies as high pressure remains with
us where temperatures will be a couple of degrees higher than Sunday
due to upper level ridge building and winds backing to more of a
westerly direction.

.LONG TERM /MONDAY NIGHT THROUGH FRIDAY/...
The surface high on Monday will unfortunately be short-lived as
another surface low approaches from the Midwest. Skies will
thicken from west to east Monday night, so expecting temps to
remain a few degrees warmer than Sunday night due to increase
in cloud cover. For our Tuesday system, we are not expecting
much in the way of precipitation as moisture is relatively
limited with dry airmass in place. It does appear that any
precipitation that does fall early Tuesday morning, may be cold
enough where at least a few areas will see some snowflakes
mixing in before changing over to rain -- as temperatures climb
well above freezing by late morning. This will generally be
confined to the Poconos, but may reach as far south as SE'rn PA
and Central NJ.

This system will quickly race east, yielding dry conditions into
Tuesday night and Wednesday as upper level flow becomes more zonal.
Highs on Wednesday will soar into the 50s for much of the coastal
plain under sunny skies. However, temperatures will struggle to exit
the 40s in the Poconos/Lehigh Valley as clouds increase once again
late on Wednesday ahead of the next low pressure system.

Our eyes then turn to yet another low pressure system that will be
developing on the lee side of the Rockies on Wednesday and
reaching our area Thursday-Friday. As has been a common pattern
this winter, the early deterministic and ensemble guidance has
this system tracking to our west, meaning we will once again be
in the warm sector. Too early to settle on specifics with regard
to timing and strength, but the end of the week does appear to
be rather wet with temperatures continuing to run well above
normal for January standards.
