.SYNOPSIS...
The remnant low pressure system from Tropical Storm Ophelia will
drift slowly across our area today and tonight before pushing
slowly offshore on Monday and Tuesday. High pressure builds
over Canada and the Northeast US through the middle of the week.
Unsettled weather looks to return late in the week.

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TODAY/...
The weakening low pressure area formerly known as Tropical Storm
Ophelia will move drift from Virginia towards Maryland by
Sunday morning. Bands of showers flowing in from southeast to
northwest off the Atlantic have generally diminished overnight,
while shifting northward, focused in an area from Beach Haven to
Trenton northeastward as of 1 AM. Even there the heaviest rain
rates are not much more than 1/4" per hour. While heavier
downpours along with a thunderstorm or two impacted portions of
southern New Jersey later last evening, any lightning now has
shifted well offshore, with a more stable atmosphere over land.
Tough to rule out a stray rumble of thunder over the coastal
waters overnight, but otherwise everything suggests that we will
not see any additional thunderstorms through Sunday. Meanwhile,
model guidance is in good general agreement that shower
activity over Maryland and south- central Pennsylvania will
expand northeastward, focusing mainly on areas from the I-95
corridor northwestward heading through Sunday morning. Showers
may even become a steadier rain there, especially this afternoon
into this evening. The rain could be heavy at times, but rates
are not expected to be high enough for a flooding concern, other
than perhaps brief/localized urban/small-stream flooding in
areas of poor drainage.
Otherwise for Sunday, the low pressure system will continue to
weaken as it moves toward southern NJ by this evening. Where the
pressure gradient between high pressure to our north remains
strong, onshore winds are still gusting to near 40 mph along the
Monmouth County coast, with gusts over 25 mph or so still at
times elsewhere. As the pressure gradient continues to weaken
over the region, winds will slacken appreciably through Sunday
morning, but there still may be some gusts over 30 mph around
Sandy Hook. Breezy east-northeast winds will linger today
mainly north of Philadelphia, particularly into the higher
terrain of eastern PA and northern NJ. Lighter and more
southerly winds will be found across the southern NJ shore and
the Delmarva. Highs will be in the low/mid 60s for the NW areas
and upper 60s to low 70s for Delmarva and metro Philadelphia
areas.

.SHORT TERM /TONIGHT THROUGH TUESDAY/...
The remnants of TC Ophelia will still be impacting the region
heading into Sunday night as it gets picked up by an upper level
trough swinging through New England. Rainfall amounts through
the overnight hours should be around 0.2-0.5" of additional
rainfall. This means over the course of the event, we should see
around 2 to 4 inches with higher isolated totals. The center of
the low should be starting to move offshore Sunday night which
should lead to winds becoming more northerly as opposed to
northeasterly. Gusts should also be coming down through the
night but will be intensifying again through the day on Monday
as low moves offshore and a building ridge of strong high
pressure increase the pressure gradient over the waters and near
shore. The winds on Monday are expected to back around a bit
and return to being offshore leading to another dreary day and
feature more thick cloud coverage and showers, along with very
little of a diurnal temperature range as highs will only top out
in the mid 60s.
By Tuesday the remnants of TC Ophelia should be well offshore
and with it the impacts over our region. High pressure will be
starting to build to our north and west as stalled boundary sags
to the south. Slight cold air advection moves over the region
keeping afternoon highs around 10 degrees below normal in the
mid 60s for Tuesday.

.LONG TERM /TUESDAY NIGHT THROUGH SATURDAY/...
A strong Canadian high out of Quebec then builds over the
northeastern US through Thursday. With the strong high in place,
the northern two-thirds of the forecast area should be dry
through Thursday. However, the high starts to weaken Thursday
night into Friday and while the deterministic guidance is
somewhat split on what happens at that point, the ensembles are
remarkably consistent with a weak 500mb ridge sitting just over
the region. 2 out of the 4 clusters from the WPC cluster
analysis are showing light chances for precip beginning Friday
and they represent close to 70% of ensembles from the GFS/EC/GEM
so the forecast is for increasing chances of precip Friday
under warm air advection.
Beyond that, high pressure returns and the weekend should end
up being fairly dry with highs warming into the 70s.

.AVIATION /05Z SUNDAY THROUGH THURSDAY/...
The following discussion is for KPHL, KPNE, KTTN, KABE, KRDG,
KILG, KMIV, KACY and surrounding areas...
Overnight...Low-end MVFR to IFR conditions, mainly due to
ceilings. Some occasional MVFR VSBY with lingering showers, but
the threat of heavy rain is about over for tonight. Northeast
wind 10 to 16 knots with gusts to around 20 to 25 kt, tending to
ease through morning. High confidence.
Sunday...Low-end MVFR to IFR conditions with periods of rain,
focused mainly from I-95 northwestward, with MVFR to possibly
IFR VSBY at times (especially RDG and ABE). Northeast to east
wind 10 to 15 kt. Some gusts around 20 kt still possible, mainly
north of PHL. High confidence.
Outlook...
Monday...Sub-VFR conditions possible with lingering showers.
Northeasterly wind 10-15 knots with gusts to 20 knots. Moderate
confidence.
Monday night...Primarily VFR. Sub-VFR possible especially
toward the coast. NE winds 10-15 kt with gusts up to 20 kt
possible. Low confidence.
Tuesday through Tuesday night...VFR. NE winds around 15 kt
gusting up to 20-25 kt during the day, becoming around 10 kt at
night. Moderate confidence.
Wednesday...VFR. NE-E winds around 10-15 kt with isolated gusts

As the wind continues to decrease slowly, we were able to
replace the Gale Warning on Delaware Bay and on our coastal
waters from the Atlantic City area southward with a Small Craft
Advisory. A Gale Warning remains in place until 4:00 AM Sunday
for our coastal waters north of the Atlantic City area.
Rough surf will continue on our waters along with occasional
rain and a chance of thunderstorms into Sunday.

knots with gusts to 25 knots. Seas up to 8 feet.
Monday...SCA conditions likely with brief gusts to Gale force.

Rip Currents...
There will continue to be a HIGH risk for the development of
dangerous rip currents along the coasts of Delaware and New
Jersey into Monday as Tropical Storm Ophelia and its eventual
remnants continue to affect our region.

.TIDES/COASTAL FLOODING...
Widespread moderate tidal flooding occurred today in tidal
areas in the Delaware counties of Sussex and Kent, and in the
New Jersey counties of Cape May and Atlantic.
We have replaced the Coastal Flood Warning for the Delaware
counties of Sussex and Kent, and for the New Jersey counties of
Cape May, Atlantic, southeastern Burlington and Ocean with a
Coastal Flood Advisory. The back bays will not drain much due to
the continued northeast wind. As a result, we have simply run
the advisory to cover both the overnight and Sunday afternoon
high tides. It will expire at 9:00 PM Sunday.
For the New Jersey counties of Middlesex, Monmouth and
Cumberland, today's flooding was in the minor range. As a
result, enough drainage should take place to preclude any
flooding with the overnight high tide. However, another round of
minor flooding is expected with Sunday afternoon's high tide,
so we have issued a new advisory that runs from 3:00 PM until
9:00 PM on Sunday.
The Coastal Flood Advisory for the Maryland counties of Talbot,
Caroline and Queen Anne's remains in place for tonight as a 1.5
to 2.0 foot surge works its way up Chesapeake Bay. The surge is
expected to dampen a bit before reaching Kent County, Maryland
where only some spotty minor flooding is anticipated.
Fortunately, positive tidal departures on the tidal Delaware
River fell just short of the minor flooding threshold, so the
Coastal Flood Advisory has been dropped for that area.
The coming week's full (Harvest) moon will have particularly
high astronomical tides associated with it. Based on the latest
guidance, we may see additional minor tidal flooding as we go
into the new week.
