What forecasters said that day

The local office's own words before this gale warning went out, as it sent them, from the Iowa Environmental Mesonet's archive of National Weather Service text.

NWS Philadelphia/Mount Holly wrote its last area forecast discussion before this gale warning went out at Apr 27, 10:26 AM EDT, 2 hours 36 minutes earlier.

Area forecast discussion, Apr 27, 10:26 AM EDT, 2 hours 36 minutes before
Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Mount Holly NJ
1026 AM EDT Thu Apr 27 2023

.SYNOPSIS...
The weak cold front pushes offshore this morning, becoming a
stationary boundary to our south. High pressure briefly returns
on Thursday, before moving off the New England coast Thursday
night. A series of low pressure systems will pass through the
region this weekend, with the first occuring Friday into
Saturday and the second occuring Sunday into Monday. The
unsettled pattern will then linger through the middle portion of
next week.

&&

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TONIGHT/...
A weak surface front, buoyed by strong shortwave energy and an
H5 trough, will remain stalled across the southern half of the
area through today. Some lingering showers are possible in these
areas into midday, although most of the showers have now
dissipated.

High pressure then builds from the Great Lakes, across New
York, and then off the Northeast coast as the day progresses.
Onshore flow develops, and this will keep skies generally cloudy
and temperatures on the cool side. Highs will top off generally
in the low to mid 60s, except for along the coasts and in the
southern Poconos, where highs will be in the 50s.

That stationary front will return back north as a warm front
late tonight as low pressure approaches from the west. Some rain
will develop over Delmarva well after midnight tonight and in
the pre- dawn hours of Friday morning. Lows tonight will be in
the 40s and low 50s.

&&

.SHORT TERM /FRIDAY THROUGH SATURDAY/...
A rather unsettled weather pattern remains on tap beginning
Friday through the early portion of next week. Surface low
pressure over the Southern MS River Valley tracks northeast
along with the stalled surface boundary to our south, lifting
back to the north as a warm front. By Friday night, initial
surface low will be over the Great Lakes with a secondary
surface low developing over the Mid- Atlantic/Chesapeake region
and moving off the coast during the day Saturday.

The progression of rain remains largely unchanged this forecast
cycle with rain increasing throughout the morning from south to
north. The heaviest of rain looks to occur late Friday
afternoon through Friday night basis the available short- range
guidance, where rain will be moderate at times. Instability
remains rather limited but some guidance continues to indicate
an environment capable of producing a thunderstorm or two. As a
result, a slight chance of thunder was included in the forecast
for late Friday evening into Friday night, focused on Delmarva
where the instability will be greatest. Also, winds will ramp
up Friday into Friday night as the pressure gradient between
strengthens. In general, expect E-SE winds of 15- 25mph
sustained, with gusts up to 30-35mph possible Friday night into
Saturday morning. Winds will tend to ease on Saturday pressure
gradient weakens with surface low moving off the coast.

The main forecast question in the short term remains the forward
progression of secondary low. Based on the latest guidance,
areas near and north of the Pennsylvania Turnpike and I-195 will
see rain stick around through much of the afternoon while areas
further south may remain dry. Uncertainty remains relatively
high though so at least chance PoPs were left in for the whole
region for Saturday. In terms of rainfall amounts, generally
looking at widespread 1-1.5 inches through Saturday, which would
be a much needed rainfall considering most of the area has been
abnormally dry.

For temperatures, looking at highs only in the upper 50s to low 60s
on Friday, with lows in the low 40s to low 50s Friday night.
Saturday's high temperatures remain highly dependent on the
timing of exiting secondary low and the result is guidance
suggesting a relatively tight gradient. Areas north of I-78
where rain looks to hang around for much of the day on Saturday
may not make it out of the 50s, while highs in Delmarva may
reach the upper 60s to near 70.

&&

.LONG TERM /SATURDAY NIGHT THROUGH WEDNESDAY/...
The general idea for the long term is for the unsettled weather
pattern to continue through the early portion of next week due to
persistent blocking pattern across North America.

Broad low meandering over the Great Lakes from the day prior
lingers, as a cold front extends southward. Some additional
southern stream upper energy near the Gulf Coast is expected to
become infused into the parent upper trough, which will aid in
developing a secondary surface low along the front later Sunday
into Monday. This infusion has trended on the faster side as of
late which has initially sped up the following progression.
Saturday night and into early Sunday morning still looks to be
rather quiet as the area is caught in between low pressure
systems, although have kept the chance of rain areawide given
unsettled pattern.

By Sunday into Sunday night though more persistent and heavier
rain returns as cold front and secondary low track through the
region, lingering into Monday morning. Winds will increase
Sunday night into Monday ahead of frontal passage with gusts up
to 30-35mph, before tapering off later Monday. For the remainder
of the long term through Wednesday, the low over the Great
Lakes is forecast to become vertically stacked over Central
Quebec. With several shortwaves pivoting around upper
low/trough, expect a chance of showers each afternoon,
especially to the north, with temps running below average.

&&
