Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Mount Holly NJ 1251 PM EDT Tue Apr 25 2023 .SYNOPSIS... High pressure slides over our area today then shifts off the Mid-Atlantic coast by Wednesday. A weak cold front passes through the region on Wednesday, followed by high pressure briefly building back into the region on Thursday. A series of low pressure systems will affect the area this weekend and into the start of the new week. && .NEAR TERM /THROUGH TONIGHT/... As of 1245 PM, an extensive cumulus field is across much of the region and therefore increased the sky cover a decent amount for a time this afternoon (especially in eastern PA and NJ). The cloud cover has slowed the surface warming some, therefore made some adjustments to the hourly temperature grids. Some weak returns on the radar across portions of northern NJ, and this could result in sprinkle although the air below cloud base is rather dry. Otherwise, an upper level low is centered over southeastern Canada and is expected to remain there through tonight. At the surface, high pressure continues to push into the region, becoming centered overhead late today then pushing offshore later tonight. The upper level low helps to drive the continued northwest to west-northwest flow across the region which results in temperatures through the near term remaining below normal. Highs are expected to be around 60 degrees for most locations with low 50s at the higher elevations in the Poconos. With the approaching high, surface winds will remain relatively light today, near 10 mph. Then as the high becomes centered overhead, winds likely become calm at times overnight. Some cumulus clouds are likely again today with diurnal mixing and continued influence from short wave energy rotating cyclonically around the upper level low. An isolated shower or sprinkle is again possible for areas north of the I-80 corridor as a result of this influence. However, as surface dew points are expected to fall into the 20s across much of the area with diurnal mixing, PoPs remain below 15 percent. && .SHORT TERM /WEDNESDAY THROUGH THURSDAY NIGHT/... High pressure moves off the Mid-Atlantic coast by Wednesday morning. A cold front approaches Wednesday afternoon, and will be supported by strong shortwave energy and an H5 trough. Scattered showers will develop across most of the area by late afternoon and into the evening, with likely showers across the far northern zones, which will be where the shortwave energy will be. There may be enough instability to allow for a few thunderstorms as well. Showers taper off late Wednesday night. Weak high pressure then builds into the region for Thursday, then departs Thursday night. Conditions will be dry on Thursday and most of Thursday night, but some rain may move into far southwest zones late Thursday night. Highs on Wednesday will be a few degrees below normal, generally in the upper 50s to low 60s north and west of the Fall Line, and in the low to mid 60s south and east of the Fall Line, and in the mid and upper 60s and southern Delmarva. Highs will be similar, if not a degree or so cooler, on Thursday. && .LONG TERM /FRIDAY THROUGH MONDAY/... A prolonged period of unsettled weather will be on tap for the Long Term period. There are some timing and placement differences among the models, and there is time for these differences to be settled. High pressure continues to depart on Friday. Meanwhile, a warm front associated with developing low pressure to the south will lift into the region, and some rain will develop Friday morning. Rain should increase throughout the day and into Friday evening as low pressure lifts to the north and east. 00Z/25 ECMWF is a bit slower and a bit farther to the north compared to the 00Z/25 GFS, and the ECMWF even keeps precip in the area into Saturday whereas the GFS shows a period of dry weather Saturday and Saturday night. A deep upper trough then digs into the north-central U.S. and several weak waves of low pressure will pass through the region Sunday before a stronger and more developed area of low pressure that will lift along the coast Sunday night through Monday, bringing a beneficial rainfall to the region. Given the differences among the models, opted to follow NBM guidance closely. This generally results in likely-categorical PoPs Friday night through Monday, with the highest PoPs Saturday night through Sunday. A few thunderstorms are possible Sunday afternoon and evening with the passage of the low. && .AVIATION /18Z TUESDAY THROUGH SUNDAY/... The following discussion is for KPHL, KPNE, KTTN, KABE, KRDG, KILG, KMIV, KACY and surrounding areas. This afternoon...VFR ceilings between about 4000-6000 feet, which should start to thin out late this afternoon. Northwest to west-northwest winds near 10 knots. High confidence. Tonight...VFR. A TORNADO BEGAN LESS THAN A MILE SOUTHWEST
OF WOMELSDORF ALONG PA ROUTE 419 BETWEEN
MEMORIAL BOULEVARD AND BRICKPLANT ROAD JUST
OVER THE BERKS AND LEBANON COUNTY LINE WHERE
A FEW OLD WOODEN TELEPHONE POLES WERE PUSHED
OVER. THE TORNADO CONTINUED NORTHEAST
THROUGH A FIELD TOWARD THE CONRAD WEISER
WEST ELEMENTARY SCHOOL. A FEW SOFTWOOD TREES
IN A TREE LINE WERE SNAPPED OR UPROOTED
ALONG THE PROPERTY LINE OF THE FIELD AND THE
SCHOOL. THIS IS THE LOCATION WHERE THE
TORNADO REACHED ITS MAXIMUM ESTIMATED WINDS
OF 90 MPH AND MAXIMUM WIDTH OF APPROXIMATELY
125 YARDS. THE TORNADO CONTINUED ACROSS THE
SCHOOL GROUNDS AND INTO A RECREATIONAL FIELD
WHERE A SET OF METAL BLEACHERS WAS BLOWN
OVER. THE TORNADO THEN MOVED NORTHEAST INTO
THE CENTRAL PART OF WOMELSDORF WHERE VARYING
DEGREES OF MINOR DAMAGE OCCURRED TO
STRUCTURES AND TREES, MAINLY BETWEEN 3RD
STREET AND 2ND STREET AS THE TORNADO CROSSED
CHERRY ALLEY, HIGH STREET, MULBERRY ALLEY,
AND FRANKLIN STREET. SEVERAL HOMES, GARAGES,
AND BARNS HAD ROOFING MATERIAL BLOW OFF,
SEVERAL SMALL TREES WERE UPROOTED, AND
NUMEROUS DOWNED LARGE TREE BRANCHES CAUSED
SOME COLLATERAL STRUCTURAL DAMAGE TO SOME
HOMES AND VEHICLES. THE TORNADIC CIRCULATION
BEGAN TO WEAKEN CONSIDERABLY AS IT CROSSED
2ND STREET NORTH OF FRANKLIN STREET NEAR
PEAR ALLEY WHERE SOME ADDITIONAL MINOR TREE
DAMAGE OCCURRED. THE TORNADO DISSIPATED AS
IT MOVED INTO THE WOMELSDORF UNION CEMETERY.
