Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Mount Holly NJ 137 PM EDT Mon Apr 24 2023 .SYNOPSIS... High pressure is forecast to pass off the Middle Atlantic Coast on Tuesday night. A cold front approaches from the northwest on Wednesday and it should move through our region on Wednesday night. High pressure is anticipated to follow for Thursday. Low pressure is forecast to pass off the North Carolina Coast on Friday or Friday night. A broad area of low pressure is then expected to approach our region from the west and southwest over the weekend. && .NEAR TERM /THROUGH TONIGHT/... As of 130 PM, mostly higher based cumulus/stratocumulus continues to expand eastward in tandem with diurnally heating. The back edge of a mid level cloud deck is now just about to clear the coast. A few brief showers or sprinkles cannot be ruled out by later this afternoon mainly closer to our northwest zones. The going forecast overall is in good shape, and just some tweaks were made to keep the hourly grids current based on the latest observations. Looks like another round of some frost for parts of the area late tonight, and will address the issuance of any Frost Advisories later this afternoon. Otherwise, a longwave trough remains over the northeastern U.S. A series of shortwaves will continue to rotate around the base of the trough. One will pass throgh this afternoon, potentially sparking a few showers in the southern Poconos and NW NJ. Similar to yesterday, not expecting much, maybe a hundredth or two of rain at most. Otherwise, it will be a partly to mostly cloudy day for the rest of the region. Temperatures will be in the 50s along/west of the Fall Line where cloud cover is more abundant. Areas from the I-95 corridor on east will get into the 60s, with a bit more sunshine anticipated there. For tonight, another night on the colder side is expected. More Frost and potentially even Freeze products will be needed, mainly along/west of the Fall Line, where temperatures are expected to be in the mid 30s, and some spots near freezing. Areas within the Pine Barrens may need to be part of the Frost Advisory, but will see how things trend today. Temperatures along the I-95 corridor and south/east look to be in the upper 30s/low 40s. Skies will be mostly clear with winds 5 kt or less, so we will have decent radiational cooling conditions region- wide. && .SHORT TERM /TUESDAY THROUGH WEDNESDAY NIGHT/... A mid level low is forecast to remain located over eastern Ontario and southwestern Quebec on Tuesday and Tuesday night. We will likely stay under the cyclonic flow associated with the system. As a result, we should begin the day under a mainly clear sky with an increase in cumulus for the afternoon. Clouds are then anticipated to mostly dissipate on Tuesday evening. Some generally mid level clouds may begin to advect over our region late on Tuesday night in the developing warm advection aloft as surface high pressure drifts off our coast. The surface wind is forecast to be light and variable. Some patchy frost development is possible in the Poconos, the Lehigh Valley and northern New Jersey. However, the frost could become somewhat limited if the increase in cloud cover becomes a bit more aggressive than currently anticipated. The mid level low is forecast to lift northward. A surface cold front is expected to approach from the northwest on Wednesday and it should pass through our region on Wednesday night. The trend toward an increase in cloud cover is expected to continue on Wednesday and Wednesday evening along with the potential for scattered showers. Some dry air may begin to arrive from the northwest late on Wednesday night in the wake of the boundary. Daytime highs on Tuesday should be mainly in the upper 50s and lower 60s, with maximum temperatures generally in the 60s on Wednesday. Lows are forecast to be from the middle 30s to the middle 40s on Tuesday night, and mainly in the upper 30s and the 40s on Wednesday night. && .LONG TERM /THURSDAY THROUGH SUNDAY/... A mid level ridge axis is forecast to pass off the East Coast on Thursday and Thursday night. A long wave mid level trough is expected to deepen over the Mississippi River Valley on Friday and Saturday. A short wave rounding the base of the trough may lift from the southeastern states toward the Middle Atlantic states on Sunday. Surface high pressure passing to our north should keep conditions mainly dry for Thursday and Thursday night along with slightly below normal temperatures. Some rain may begin to spread into our region from the south for Friday and Friday night as the surface high retreats and as low pressure passes off the North Carolina Coast. We will continue to mention a chance of rain for Saturday as we are between weather systems. An increasing chance of rain is anticipated on Sunday as the short wave and an accompanying surface low approach from the southwest. Temperatures are expected to remain generally a bit below normal through the period from Friday through Sunday. && .AVIATION /18Z MONDAY THROUGH SATURDAY/...
