Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Mount Holly NJ 751 PM EDT Sun Apr 23 2023 .SYNOPSIS... An area of low pressure will drift across New England and into eastern Canada through early next week while high pressure builds to our west and eventually reaching the Mid Atlantic around Tuesday. The high will briefly affect the area through Tuesday night before shifting offshore by Wednesday. On Wednesday a weak low pressure is forecast to move out of the Great Lakes and into New England, while another area of low pressure will pass to our south Wednesday night into Thursday. Yet another low pressure system will move in behind this low to our south later Thursday into Friday, and may move close enough to the area to bring some impacts. && .NEAR TERM /THROUGH MONDAY/... Evening Update... With clearing skies across the region I opted drop temps just a bit for the overnight hours. Given the slightly cooler temps, I've opted to issue a Frost Advisory for Berks, Lehigh, Carbon, and Monroe counties in PA. There's a greater than 50% chance of frost formation especially in the lower valleys across eastern PA. Widespread frost is not expected however given the slightly cooler temps and clearing skies, I think at least a few areas will reach the frost point during the overnight hours. Previous discussion follows: While broad surface high pressure will gradually build eastward from the Ohio Valley across the Appalachians, our area will continue to be under the influence of a broad upper-low over the Great Lakes, Ontario and Quebec. That system will circulate some fairly potent shortwaves eastward, a couple of which will amplify and take on a negative tilt as they track eastward toward our region. One is passing by this afternoon, bringing fairly extensive cumulus and stratocumulus across just about our entire area, though particularly north and west of I-95. Some spotty showers have even come into areas as far southeast as perhaps the Lehigh Valley. However, increasingly dry air in the boundary layer filtering in, along with downslope flow off the Appalachians will limit severely limit those showers. Heading into tonight, with the decrease in daytime heating and subsequently more stable conditions, showers will diminish and clouds will decrease while we will be in between shortwaves. That will mean relatively clear skies for most areas. However, some clouds will probably linger around the Poconos, and that is the one area where temperatures could potentially cool close to the mid 30s. Elected not to issue a Frost Advisory for that reason, plus with light winds lingering and continued falling dewpoints, that will argue against frost formation as well. Monday will be a very similar day to Sunday, with another potent shortwave moving by, but continued dry, westerly flow otherwise. Expect similar increase in clouds from west to east through the day as daytime heating increases instability, with more in the way of sunshine toward the coast, and a chance of spotty occasional showers toward the Appalachians. Temperatures will be cooler than Sunday; still highs in the 60s for most areas near and east of I-95, but mid to upper 50s back westward toward the mountains where clouds will be more extensive. Worth mentioning, any rainfall amounts with showers even up toward the Poconos will be very light; only a few hundredths of an inch at most. Monday night into Tuesday morning will offer a more widespread threat for some frost. Expect skies to clear out and winds to calm more, along with drier air in place. Would not rule out in some of our colder spots in northwest portions of our area reaching the 32 degree mark, and even some frost as far southeast as the NJ pine barrens could be possible. && .SHORT TERM /MONDAY NIGHT THROUGH WEDNESDAY/... Fairly quiet weather is expected for the short term period for Tuesday and Tuesday night. An area of pressure will slowly drift across New England and into into Canada Tuesday into Tuesday night. Meanwhile, high pressure will finally move into the Mid Atlantic on Tuesday, then offshore Tuesday night. Overall, mostly dry conditions are expected Tuesday through Tuesday night. Slightly below normal temperatures are expected during the period, with the chance of close to freezing temperature occurring for our far northern areas. Frost is possible across portions of eastern Pennsylvania and northwestern New Jersey. But this will be dependent on how much winds drop off and how much RH values rebound overnight. && .LONG TERM /WEDNESDAY NIGHT THROUGH SUNDAY/... Things get a little more active as we head to the second half of the week into the weekend. There will be a chance of rain each day from Wednesday through Friday as several low pressure systems will pass close by the area, then a dry period Saturday before another better chance of rain Sunday. On Wednesday and Wednesday night, a weak area of low pressure will pass to our north, while another low pressure will move offshore to our south. Meanwhile, a couple of short wave/vorticity impulses will move across the area, leading to a chance of showers Wednesday into Wednesday night. By Thursday into Friday, another low pressure will move offshore to our south and combine with the initial surface offshore. Meanwhile, several short wave/vorticity impulses are forecast to move across the area which could bring increased chances for showers across the area. After a dry period on Saturday, there is the potential for a frontal system to move across the east coast Sunday as an area of low pressure drifts into the Great Lakes region. Temperatures will remain near or slightly below normal for the second half of the week into next weekend. && .AVIATION /00Z MONDAY THROUGH FRIDAY/... The following discussion is for KPHL, KPNE, KTTN, KABE, KRDG, KILG, KMIV, KACY and surrounding areas. Tonight...VFR. Light westerly winds continue through the evening. Monday...VFR. Partly clear skies becoming gusty during the late afternoon. Outlook... Tuesday-Tuesday night...VFR. Northwest winds 5-10 knots with gusts 15-20 knots during the day, then becoming light and variable for many areas overnight. High confidence. Wednesday...VFR. Southwest winds 5-10 knots. High confidence. Wednesday night...Generally VFR, although conditions may lower to MVFR at times overnight. Chance of showers. South winds 5-10 knots, become east to southeast overnight. Moderate confidence. Thursday...Generally VFR, although conditions may lower to MVFR at times. Chance of showers. East to northeast winds 5-10 knots. Moderate confidence. Thursday night-Friday...Conditions lowering to MVFR with showers possible. East to northeast winds 10-15 knots with gusts 20-30 knots. && .MARINE... Westerly winds today will be around 10 kt, but may pick up to 15 kt with gusts to 20 kt out of the WNW this evening into tonight. Seas mainly around 2 to 4 feet, but some locally above 4 feet this afternoon into this evening. That may even flirt with 5 feet from 10 to 20 nm from shore and beyond, but the coverage looks too limited and brief to issue a Small Craft Advisory. A low- period southeast 'swell' leftover from southeast winds ahead of yesterday's front are continuing to propagate into our waters and keeping our seas more elevated than they would be otherwise with the relatively light winds today. For Monday and Monday night... Winds will turn back to the southwest briefly on Monday across the NJ and DE nearshore waters as a weak trough of low pressure passes by, but will generally be only around 8 to 12 kt, with fair weather otherwise. Winds will shift back to the west on Monday night. Another easterly swell will arrive, but combined seas will remain around 2 to 4 feet at most. Outlook... Tuesday-Wednesday night...Conditions are expected to remain below advisory levels through Wednesday night, although winds could gust around 20 knots at times. Thursday-Thursday night...While winds remain below advisory levels through the day, seas may begin to increase to 5 feet or higher. Friday...Winds and waves are likely to be above advisory levels. && .FIRE WEATHER... Following all the rain the area received over the last 24 hours, increasingly dry air will filter into our region through Tuesday. Afternoon minimum RH values will likely drop into the 30-40 percent range on Monday, then likely even below 30 percent in portions of our region on Tuesday. However, while there will be a light westerly breeze both days, wind speeds generally look quite light, sustained up to perhaps 10 mph at most, with limited gusts. In addition to the increase in fuel moisture due to the recent rain, that will limit the fire weather concerns. The NJ pine barrens would be the most likely place to dry out quickest due to the fuel types there, and we will monitor trends, but at this point we do not expect to issue any special statements for elevated fire weather. && .PHI WATCHES/WARNINGS/ADVISORIES...
