Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Mount Holly NJ
148 AM EDT Tue Oct 31 2023
.SYNOPSIS...
A cold front will continue moving offshore this morning.
Another area of low pressure develops off the Mid- Atlantic
coast later today before moving farther away on Wednesday. High
pressure then builds into the Mid- Atlantic region later
Wednesday and remains nearly in place through the weekend into
early next week.
&&
.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TODAY/...
The cold front has pushed further offshore with lingering areas
of light rain along coastal New Jersey down into southern
Delaware and the Eastern Shore of Maryland. The light rain will
persist across the coastal plain early this morning then shift
offshore by daybreak or so, though so rain will linger near
southern Delaware and Cape May through the remainder of the
morning.
A longwave trough axis will dig southeastwards over and
southwestwards of the Great Lakes region. A shortwave eastwards
of this axis will look to pass to our north all while CAA
continues across the region. Temperatures will drop considerably
overnight with forecast lows ranging from the mid to upper 30s
northwest of the I-95 corridor and in the low to mid 40s for the
corridor and areas southeast of it. A freeze is likely to occur
across the Pocono plateau, where a Freeze Warning remains in
effect. Areas of frost development are forecast just southeast
of there across the corridor from Berks County PA, the Lehigh
Valley, and northeast to Sussex County NJ. There will be a
delicate balance of clearing skies, lessening winds, and some
radiational cooling within just a few hours of daybreak that
should be sufficient to support the frost development. Further
southeast, some patchy frost development is possible in adjacent
areas of southeastern PA and northern NJ, however slightly
stronger winds and slight warmer temperatures should preclude
the need for any frost headline for those areas. There will
remain a chance of light rain or sprinkles across the coastal
plain along with mostly cloudy skies overnight; widespread or
persistent measurable rain is not expected.
Weak surface high pressure builds ahead of the digging upper
trough to the west. However, coastal low pressure will also look
to develop to our southeast and some shortwave energy may
linger. Slight chance and chance PoPs remain for southern
Delmarva and our southern coastal areas of NJ. Highs will likely
only reach the low to mid 50s across the region.
&&
.SHORT TERM /TONIGHT THROUGH THURSDAY NIGHT/...
Much colder as low pressure moves farther away from the northern Mid-
Atlantic coast Tuesday night and Wednesday. Freeze and frost
conditions especially Wednesday night and again Thursday night.
As a strong upper-level trough moves across the East Tuesday night
into Wednesday, surface low pressure will continue to organize off
the northern Mid-Atlantic coast. The trough looks to be fairly
progressive and therefore the surface low should be shifting
eastward pretty quickly Wednesday morning. The forecast challenge
with this feature is how far west does the forcing for ascent get.
This looks to be focused on the 700-850 mb frontogenesis to the
northwest and west of the surface low. Some guidance clips the
coastal areas with this and therefore generates a period of rain,
while some other guidance is a miss or just about a miss. Given what
appears to be a drier trend, opted to trim back the PoPs inland and
confined any likely (60-70 percent) or categorical (80 percent) PoPs
along the coast and eastward. These then quickly decrease with an
inland extend. Otherwise, a period of cloud cover should be across
most if not all of the area Tuesday night into Wednesday with this
more pronounced closer to the coast. The extent of the cloud cover
will be important as a much colder air mass will be settling in on
the west side of the coastal low. This could result in at least some
frost across the western zones with even some spots getting to or
just below freezing (mainly Poconos to far northwestern New Jersey).
Since there is some uncertainty here, opted to not issue any freeze
and/or frost related headlines at this time.
As the ocean storm moves farther away Wednesday, we should see
improving conditions although it will be cold as strong cold
advection occurs. The pressure gradient will also tighten for a time
and this will result in a noticeable north-northwest breeze, which
will add to the wind chill factor. The winds diminish Wednesday
night as surface high pressure builds in and the sky clears. This
will set the stage for a very cold night with a widespread freeze
forecast.
As we go through Thursday, a very cold start to the day will give
way to a chilly afternoon with high temperatures only in the 40s to
low/mid 50s. There will be less wind although with the surface high
starting to be centered more to our south and southeast, our surface
winds will become more southwesterly. A dry day is expected with a
mostly sunny sky. Another cold night Thursday night with
temperatures dropping back into the upper 20s to low 30s.
&&
.LONG TERM /FRIDAY THROUGH MONDAY/...
Summary...After a cold start, milder temperatures overall with
limited chances for precipitation.
Synoptic Overview...The flow aloft is forecast to be mostly zonal
and after a cold start this will result in milder temperatures
overall across the region. A shortwave trough however is forecast to
slide on by late Saturday night and Sunday, followed by some
additional energy potentially approaching on Monday. Due to the more
zonal flow, the timing of these embedded shortwaves are more
challenging to pin down. At the surface, high pressure is forecast
to remain across our region as a front is draped well to our north.
For Friday...A lingering upper-level trough is forecast to continue
to lift north and northeastward leaving behind a more zonal flow
regime. Surface high pressure mostly centered just to our south will
result in a cold start to the day, however given higher heights the
afternoon temperatures should get into the upper 50s to lower 60s
across the region (cooler across parts of the Poconos). While it
will be cold again at night, the moderating of the air mass should
result in it not being as cold as previous nights.
For Saturday and Sunday...A shortwave trough is forecast to quickly
shift eastward, due to the more zonal flow aloft ahead of it, from
the Midwest Saturday morning then slide across the Great Lakes into
the Northeast Saturday afternoon/night into Sunday. The moisture
with this feature looks to be limited especially farther south
across our area, however just enough forcing for ascent may clip our
northern areas especially. This could result in a few showers across
the far northern areas sometime Saturday night through Sunday night.
A more southwesterly flow ahead of this feature will boost the warm
air advection some, resulting in milder nighttime and daytime
temperatures both days.
For Monday...Following the shortwave trough mentioned above, the
flow goes more zonal again however another shortwave may approach
during this time frame. Given the more zonal flow setup, timing of
these features is of lower confidence. Overall though, the systems
embedded within this flow look to be on the weaker side and with
surface high pressure sitting to our south and stretched across much
of the Gulf coast, moisture return this far north should be limited.
Daytime temperatures should climb into the upper 50s to low/mid 60s
across most of the region.
&&
.AVIATION /06Z TUESDAY THROUGH SATURDAY/...
The following discussion is for KPHL, KPNE, KTTN, KABE,
KRDG, KILG, KMIV, KACY and surrounding areas.
Through 12Z... Mainly VFR. NW winds around 5-10 kts becoming
more northerly with time. Some light sprinkles will persist at
MIV/ACY through 12Z. High confidence on prevailing conditions.
Today... Mainly VFR. N winds around 5 kts becoming variable,
favoring a east-northeast direction. Periods of light rain
possible, mainly at KACY. High confidence.
Outlook...
Tuesday night...VFR overall, however there could be a period of MVFR
conditions with some rain mainly at KMIV and KACY. North-northwest
winds around 5 knots. Low confidence.
Wednesday...VFR. Northwest winds 10-15 knots with gusts up to 20
knots, diminishing to 5 knots or light and variable. Moderate
confidence.
Thursday and Friday...VFR. Northwest winds 5-10 knots, becoming
southwest Thursday afternoon through Friday. Moderate confidence.
Saturday...VFR overall with some increasing clouds. Southwest winds
10 knots or less. Moderate confidence.
&&
.MARINE...
Small Craft Advisory in effect for all coastal waters.
Northwest winds initially around 15-20 knots with gusts around
25-30 knots. Seas of 3-5 feet will drop to 2-4 feet by morning.
Winds and gusts will diminish with time. Winds are still gusting
near 25 kts at Lewes, so the SCA was extended until 4 AM for
lower Delaware Bay. SCA ending for all ocean zones at 6AM.
Chance of showers across most zones.
Today...No headlines expected. N winds around 10-15 kts
becoming NE/ENE with time. Seas 2-4 feet becoming around 1-3
feet by evening. Chance of showers most likely over the southern
ocean zones.
Outlook...
Tuesday night...Small Craft Advisory conditions may start to develop
late overnight as north-northwest winds increase.
Wednesday...Small Craft Advisory conditions probable due to gusty
northwest winds and building seas. The winds and seas then decrease
later at night.
Thursday through Saturday...The conditions are anticipated to be
below Small Craft Advisory criteria.
&&
.TIDES/COASTAL FLOODING...
Minor flooding occurred at many of our coastal and bay-side
sites during high tide on Monday. That has all subsided, and
offshore northwesterly winds should favor water flowing out of
back bays, as well as lowering tidal anomolies.
Spotty minor coastal flooding may still occur with the Tuesday
morning high tide cycle, as anomolies will still be running on
the high side. With northerly flow during the day on Tuesday, we
may have to keep an eye on the back bays such as Barnegat Bay as
well. However, with another day removed from the full moon, and
offshore flow Monday night, we should be below advisory
thresholds.
