.SYNOPSIS...
High pressure moves in from the northwest and remains in control
through Thursday night before sliding offshore. A weak area of low
pressure will move up the coast on Friday night, with a cold front
approaching from the west on Saturday. The front passes on Saturday
night, with high pressure moving in on Sunday and remaining in place
through the early part of next week.

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TONIGHT/...
A cold front was pushing southward through our region early this
morning with clearing skies in its wake.
The mid level trough over eastern Canada and the northeastern states
will begin to pull away to the east today and tonight, but not
before one final short wave drops southeastward over our region this
afternoon. The feature will have little moisture associated with it,
so it should pass unnoticed.
Surface high pressure will build southeastward from northern Ontario
with its center reaching New York State and Pennsylvania late
tonight. The air mass will bring cool dry weather conditions to our
region for today and tonight.
A northwest to north wind 10 to 15 MPH with gusts of 20 to 25 MPH is
anticipated for today. Wind speeds will diminish tonight.
Today's high temperatures are expected to favor the 60s, with some
readings in the lower 70s in eastern Maryland, Delaware and southern
New Jersey. Temperatures should not get above the 50s in the
elevated terrain of the Poconos and far northern New Jersey.
Tonight's minimum temperatures are forecast to be in the 30s and
40s. Readings should drop to or just below freezing in parts of the
Pocono Region and far northern New Jersey. As a result, we have
issued a Freeze Watch for the Pennsylvania counties of Carbon and
Monroe, and for Sussex County in New Jersey. The air mass is quite
dry and a light wind may linger through much of the night to
preclude the development of any widespread frost in the other areas
that will fall into the 30s.

.SHORT TERM /THURSDAY THROUGH FRIDAY/...
The end of the week looks rather quiet as a mid-level ridge builds
in from the west. High pressure will be centered just to our north
on Thursday morning, fostering a light onshore flow through the day.
This will bring an increase to low-level moisture with flow coming
off the Atlantic. Winds look to be much weaker compared to today as
well, limiting fire weather concerns. Cooler onshore flow will
result in below normal temperatures for Thursday. Looking at highs
in the 60s for most with some spots along the immediate coast
struggling to get out of the 50s. Skies will be mostly clear
overall. Overnight lows will generally be in 40s, with areas in the
urban corridor and Delmarva staying right around 50.
For Friday, high pressure moves offshore and flow is expected to
turn more southerly. This will result in temperatures moderating a
bit, getting into the upper 60s/low 70s. Cloud cover is expected to
increase as a weak area of low pressure off the Carolinas slowly
progresses northward, but we should not see any precipitation from
this system through the day on Friday. Should just be a partly
cloudy day overall, though some unsettled weather is on the way for
the weekend.

.LONG TERM /FRIDAY NIGHT THROUGH TUESDAY/...
The next chance for rain begins on Friday night as an area of low
pressure moves up the coast from the Carolinas. It does look like
this weak system will get to our coastal waters prior to the arrival
of the cold front, which could bring some showers to areas near the
coast, especially in the southern portion of the region. Showers
look to move in late Friday night/early Saturday morning, continuing
into the day Saturday as the system moves north. Have adjusted PoPS
a touch upward east of the I-95 corridor on Saturday morning to
account for this, but have capped PoPs at high-end Chc due to the
uncertain nature of this coastal system. Overnight lows Friday into
Saturday will be in the low to mid 50s.
In terms of the incoming frontal system this weekend, overnight
deterministic and ensemble guidance has come into more agreement
overall. The trend has been a bit weaker with the incoming trough
from the Great Lakes region. In terms of timing, the majority of
guidance has the front coming through late Saturday night, with the
bulk of the showers ahead of the front moving through Saturday
afternoon and evening. Due to the weakening trend and weaker
forcing, have again capped PoPs at high-end Chc for the most part,
with the exception of northern areas, where Likely PoPs have been
introduced as it looks like the strongest forcing will be present in
the northern part of our CWA. Instability remains on the lower side,
so have kept out the mention of thunder that the previous forecast
had. Temperatures on Saturday will be around average for mid-May.
Once the front clears, high pressure will build in from the west and
remain in control through the early part of next week. There could
be a lingering shower near the coast on Sunday morning, but once
that moves out, it looks dry and tranquil through Tuesday. The
passing front will knock down dewpoints a good 10-15 degrees, but
temperatures should stay steady overall through the early part of
next week, staying right around seasonal norms.

A northerly wind around 15 knots with gusts into the lower 20s is
expected for the coastal waters of Delaware and New Jersey for
today. The wind is anticipated to veer toward the northeast tonight.
While some gusts around 25 knots are possible, they should not be
widespread enough to warrant a Small Craft Advisory.
Waves are forecast to be 3 to 4 feet on our ocean waters, and 2 feet
or less on Delaware Bay.

.FIRE WEATHER...
Relative humidity values are forecast to drop into the 20 to 25
percent range today in much of eastern Pennsylvania and New Jersey.
A northwest to north wind 10 to 15 MPH with gusts around 20 to 25
MPH is expected. As a result, there will be a heightened fire
weather concern for parts of the region.
We will continue the Red Flag Warning for today in the New Jersey
counties of Atlantic, Gloucester, Camden, Burlington and Ocean to
cover the Pine Barrens which are quite susceptible due to the recent
dry conditions. A Special Weather Statement will be used for the
remainder of New Jersey, excluding the coastal strip. The Special
Weather Statement will also include the Pocono Region of
Pennsylvania. For the Lehigh Valley and southeastern Pennsylvania,
the spring green-up and the current fuel moisture levels should
preclude any significant fire weather concerns for those areas. The
same is true for our counties in eastern Maryland and Delaware based
on coordination with our state partners.
Conditions improve on Thursday as winds relax and shift to the
east/southeast. This will bring a slight rise in dewpoints/RH values
and with winds only expected to be around 5-10 MPH, the fire weather
risk will be much lower compared to today.
Beyond Thursday, no fire weather concerns are expected.
