Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Mount Holly NJ
208 AM EDT Mon Oct 30 2023
.SYNOPSIS...
A stalled frontal boundary will remain in the vicinity of the
coastal plain through this morning, which will support multiple
chances for rain, particularly north and west of I-95.
Meanwhile, low pressure will gradually develop along it and move
offshore today, pushing the boundary offshore as a cold front
later in the day. A much cooler and drier airmass will then
remain in place through the remainder of the week as high
pressure builds from the west. Low pressure will pass well
southeast of the region Tuesday night, bringing additional
chances for rain. The high pressure will begin to shift offshore
Thursday into Friday, resulting in moderating temperatures into
the weekend.
&&
.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TODAY/...
The stalled frontal boundary remains near the Maryland portion
of the Delmarva Peninsula near Salisbury. Some light showers
have developed in the vicinity of the I-95 corridor with light
rain spreading into the area north of I-78. This trend looks
likely to continue through tonight and into the morning thanks
to forcing aloft keeping the precipitation development further
northwest. In any case, not expecting a lot of rain.
Additionally, some fog and drizzle has developed due to the
marine layer moving inland.
A longwave trough axis will pass from the northern CONUS today
across the Great Lakes tonight and heights will be falling
through much of this period in response. A shortwave trough will
pass to our north tonight. At the surface, the stalled frontal
boundary is forecast to drift gradually northward after
daybreak before surging south and offshore as a strengthening
surface low related to the shortwave passes offshore to the
east. Cold advection will ramp up in the wake of the frontal
boundary, advecting a much cooler and drier airmass into the
region beginning this afternoon and through tonight.
The aforementioned rain will continue after daybreak this
morning, mainly near/north of I-78, displaced well north of the
frontal boundary. The rain will depart into the afternoon. Some
showers are possible farther south though, and the chances of
showers will spread southward (especially across the coastal
plain) throughout the day as the front begins surging
southeastward. The frontal boundary will result in a wide range
of temperatures across the region, similar to Sunday. Expect
highs in the mid 50s near and north of I-80 and in the upper
70s to low 80s south of the frontal boundary across Delmarva
and far southern New Jersey. Guidance varies in the solutions of
just how far north the boundary will drift early in the day,
though it should remain just southeast of I-95 as is typically
expected in this type of setup. Elsewhere, expect highs in the
60s to even the low 70s near and just south of I-95. Northwest
winds will increase to around 10-15 mph as cold advection ramps
up later in the day with gusts up to 25 mph possible.
&&
.SHORT TERM /TONIGHT THROUGH WEDNESDAY/...
Weak surface high pressure will begin to squeeze in from the
southwest Monday night ahead of an upper level trough beginning
to dig down west of the Great Lakes. With time, the surface high
pressure further weakens while moving over the region Tuesday
as the trough to the west of it continues to dig and move
eastward. At the surface level, a cold front associated with the
trough looks to cross through before Wednesday morning.
Thereafter, strong surface high pressure begins to build in.
Overall, the pattern evolution described shows the short term
will be fairly low impact weather wise. Not expecting any
concerning instability, impactful QPF, or excessive rainfall
during the period. With only weak surface high pressure
beginning to squeeze in Monday night and perhaps a shortwave or
two passing through, there remains a slight chance to chance of
PoPs for areas southeast of the I-95 corridor. For Tuesday, with
weak surface high pressure over the region and perhaps some
shortwave energy persisting, the PoP story more or less will
stay the same. Will increase PoPs through the region Tuesday
night as coastal low pressure develops well offshore and some
moisture form the Great Lakes begins to flow in. PoPs will taper
off Wedensday morning with the region looking to be mainly dry
by the afternoon.
Poconos may see some frozen precipitation with PoPs Tuesday
night. Not expecting any freezing rain, precipitation will
likely change over from rain at the start to light sleet/light
snow. Not expecting any snowfall amounts greater than 1 inch.
&&
.LONG TERM /WEDNESDAY NIGHT THROUGH SUNDAY/...
The ensemble and deterministic guidance remains in good
agreement on the upper level pattern expected during the long
term. Overall, forecaster confidence in the pattern remains
high. A weakening upper level trough axis east of Maine
Wednesday night will continue to lift out with a zonal upper
level pattern taking hold.
At the surface level, strong surface high pressure will
continue to build in from the west/southwest Wednesday night and
will hold a dominate grasp over the region for remainder of the
long term. No precipitation is expected through the long term
period. Temperatures will run mainly below average for the term
long. Expecting well below normal temperatures Wednesday night
and Thursday. Temperatures may look to still run below normal
Thursday night before returning to right around average for
Friday and Saturday.
A widespread, region wide freeze is likely Wednesday night into
Thursday.
&&
.AVIATION /06Z MONDAY THROUGH FRIDAY/...
The following discussion is for KPHL, KPNE, KTTN, KABE,
KRDG, KILG, KMIV, KACY and surrounding areas.
Conditions continue to lower early this morning. This trend will
continue as low clouds, fog, mist, and drizzle develop on a
northeasterly flow north of a stationary front. Worst conditions
will likely remain near KACY/KMIV where the marine layer may
bring very low cigs and fog. After that, widespread
IFR/LIFR/VLIFR cigs looks likely further inland, but reductions
in visibility will be a bit more tempered, especially at KPHL
and KILG. However, even here VLIFR cigs still may be possible
as winds become light and variable.
Slow improvements likely as low pressure passes later today and
winds strengthen from the west-northwest in the afternoon, with
cigs rising to VFR as the day progresses. VFR conditons are
forecast for tonight with northwest to north winds continuing
near 5-10 kts.
Outlook...
Tuesday...Mainly VFR. Chance of showers increases later on.
Variable winds around 5 kts. Moderate confidence.
Tuesday night...Sub-VFR possible with a chance of showers.
Light and variable winds. Moderate confidence.
Wednesday...Mainly VFR. NW winds 10-15 kts with gusts to 20-25
kts. High confidence.
Thursday...VFR. W to SW winds 5-10 kts. High confidence.
Friday...VFR. SW winds 5-10 kts. High confidence.
&&
.MARINE...
For the remainder of this morning, no marine headlines are
expected. Winds will be out of the south tonight and light in
nature, before increasing from 10-15 kts by morning. Some sea
fog is possible overnight tonight as well, possibly lowering
visibility to near 1 NM.
By late this afternoon, the cold front will have moved off the
coast. Southerly winds will become northwesterly and are
expected to become elevated in wake of the frontal passage
upwards of 25-30 kt gusts. Thus, have issued a Small Craft
Advisory for the Delware Bay waters from 4PM Monday through 2AM
Tuesday and for the Atlantic Ocean coastal waters from Cape May
to Fenwick Island from 5PM Monday to 6AM Tuesday.
Occasional gusts up to 25 kts are possible along the NJ coastal
waters Monday night into Tuesday as well, but there is not
enough confidence at this time to issue a SCA for these areas.
Outlook...
Tuesday/Tuesday Night...No headlines anticipated.
Wednesday...SCA criteria expected; seas up to 5 feet with
frequent gusts increasing to 25-30 kts.
Thursday...No headlines anticipated.
Friday...No headlines anticipated.
&&
.TIDES/COASTAL FLOODING...
A more widespread event of minor tidal flooding is expected
with the morning high tide on Monday due to a lack of any
offshore wind helping to drain the back bays. Thus, a Coastal
Flood Advisory has been issued from 8AM to 2PM on Monday from
Middlesex County southward to Cumberland County (NJ) and for
Kent and Sussex Counties (DE).
Some spotty minor flooding may also occur in the upper portion
of the Delaware Bay and tidal Delaware River, especially north
of Philadelphia.
Another opportunity of spotty minor tidal flooding may occur
with Tuesday morning's high tide, but this the confidence in
this occuring is less as we will have an offshore component of
the wind following frontal passage late Monday.
