For the Coastal Flood Warning, two to three feet of inundation
above ground level expected in low-lying areas near shorelines
and tidal waterways.
* WHERE...Delaware Beaches.
* WHEN...For the High Rip Current Risk, through Saturday
evening. For the Coastal Flood Warning, from noon to 8 PM EDT
Saturday.
* IMPACTS...At this level, flooding may become severe enough to
cause structural damage along with widespread roadway flooding
in coastal and bayside communities, and near inland tidal
waterways. Some locations may become isolated by the flood
waters. Rip currents can sweep even the best swimmers away
from shore into deeper water.
* ADDITIONAL DETAILS...With the long duration of onshore winds
expected, the back bays may struggle to drain during low
tides. This could result in minor to moderate coastal flooding
lingering after high tide. Additionally, minor flooding is
possible again with the Sunday afternoon high tide.

expected, the back bays may struggle to drain during low tides.
This could result in minor to moderate coastal flooding
lingering after high tide. Between 1 to 3 inches of rain have
fallen as well, which may struggle to drain with the rising
tide. Additionally, minor flooding is possible again with the
Sunday afternoon high tide.

.SYNOPSIS...
High pressure to our north holds influence over the region
overnight. Coastal low pressure draws near Friday and is set to
begin impacting the region Friday night. Coastal low impacts the
region mainly Saturday to Sunday. High pressure north of the
Great Lakes begins to build in for Monday and may hold influence
over the region through the middle of next week.
&&
.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TODAY/...
Overall, no significant changes to the near term forecast. Overnight,
coastal low pressure off the southeastern CONUS will continue
to move northwards and approach closer to the region. Expecting
the cirrus shield, and cloud cover in general, from the low to
really start building in tonight. This may put the breaks on the
radiational cooling potential which would have otherwise be
seen if not for the clouds...winds will remain light (i.e., less
than 5 kts or less). Overnight lows in the 50s can be expected
across the region, except the Poconos which may see the mid to
upper 40s.
For tomorrow, surface high pressure to the north nudges
eastward while the coastal low continues to move northwards.
Cloud cover will increase throughout the day. Winds will
increase to 10 to 15 kts. High temperatures of low to mid 70s
can be expected across the region along with dewpoints in the
50s. Mainly no PoPs are included in the forecast. Will introduce
mainly slight chance PoPS for southern Delmarva by late
afternoon in anticipation of low drawing closer.

.SHORT TERM /TONIGHT THROUGH SUNDAY/...
Attention remains on now PTC-16 strengthening offshore
southeast of the Carolinas. This low will develop as an upstream
shortwave over the Tennessee Valley drops into a negatively-
tilted trough off the Southeast Coast, and quickly forms a
closed low. The system will become vertically-stacked and
partially cut-off from the main jet- stream flow, blocked by
high pressure to the north. These kind of storm systems can
often be slow-moving and notoriously difficult to forecast. One
key will be the timing and strength of a northern stream
shortwave trough tracking eastward across Ontario and Quebec
Friday into Friday night. Guidance is in decent agreement in a
general sense in that shortwave allowing the low to track
northward across the mid-Atlantic, but then the area of low
pressure may be left behind to drift around our region Saturday
night into Sunday.
Enhanced by low-level convergence and some warm-air advection,
an initial batch of moderate to perhaps occasionally heavy rain
will advance northward across the Delmarva Friday night, and
perhaps into southern New Jersey by Saturday morning. However,
the details from that point forward remain a little unclear, as
models disagree on the northward extent of steadier rain through
Saturday, along with the timing and amounts of additional rain
as the area of low pressure tracks toward our region on Sunday.
The latest rainfall forecast supports widespread 2-3" of rain
over the course of about 48 hours with locally higher amounts
possible near the coast, which was a slight increase from the
previous forecast.
While heavier rainfall amounts than those are still within the
range of outcomes, those amounts do not implicitly suggest
significant impacts or more than nuisance poor-drainage or
localized urban/small- stream type of flooding. Even that would
probably be confined to the period of time when the initial
batch of rain is lifting northward earlier on Saturday.
Precipitable water values do rise into the 1.5-1.75" range on
Saturday southeast of I-95, with dewpoints into the upper 60s
along the coast, with some potential for an isolated
thunderstorm there, even a very low chance of a tornado.
Otherwise farther inland, especially northwest of the urban
corridor, the atmosphere looks progressively less moist and more
stable, which may limit the heavy rain threat.
Overall the greatest threats from this system will likely occur
along the coast, with widespread coastal flooding, gale to
storm force winds over the coastal waters, and strong to
damaging winds along the immediate coast. Sustained winds may
reach 40 mph along the immediate coast with gusts up to 60 mph
forecast. Farther inland across the coastal plain expect
sustained winds near 20-30 mph with gusts in the 40-50 mph
range. A High Wind Warning and Wind Advisory have been issued
for the areas. Toward the I-95 corridor and northwest, wind near
15-25 mph are expected with gusts up to 35 mph possible.
Temperatures will be rather cool as well, with highs only in
the low to mid 60s away from the coast. The system is currently
forecast to be post-tropical once it reaches our latitude
Saturday night and Sunday. The remnant low will cross the area
on Sunday bringing continued showers and heavy downpours. In
either case, we expect the most significant impacts from the
system to occur associated with the strong synoptic wind
gradient from high pressure to our north and the strengthening
low well to the south. The low itself is expected to weaken

extended portion of the forecast. Temperatures through the
middle of next week look to remain near or slightly below
typical late September levels, with highs in the upper 60s or

some uncertainty at that time range and in this pattern, but to
be honest it looks like it may turn out dry, and so if we do

Rip Currents...
For Friday, a HIGH risk for rip currents continues for Delaware
and New Jersey beaches. Onshore winds increase to around 20 to
30 mph with breaking waves increasing to 4 to 6 feet with a
continued medium-long period swell.
Looking farther ahead to the weekend, a HIGH risk of rip
currents will persist along with the potential for high surf
and beach erosion. Breaking waves may exceed 8 feet at times.
East to northeast winds near 25-40 mph with gusts up to 60 mph
possible as a coastal storm impacts the region.

.TIDES/COASTAL FLOODING...
A potentially significant coastal flood event is forecast for
Saturday's high tide along portions of Atlantic Coastal New
Jersey and Delaware, and Delaware Bay.
A strong onshore wind will increase beginning Friday, reaching
a peak on Saturday. This is expected to result in widespread
coastal flooding along the Atlantic coasts of New Jersey and
Delaware, Delaware Bay, and the tidal Delaware River. The
greatest surge and tidal departures are forecast to occur with
the Saturday afternoon high tide along the coasts of Kent and
Sussex Counties in Delaware, and potentially along coastal
portions of Cape May and Atlantic Counties in New Jersey.
The greatest threat for Major coastal flooding will be along
the coasts of Kent and Sussex Counties in Delaware, however some
spotty major flooding is possible in Cape May and Atlantic
Counties. There is a threat of Moderate coastal flooding in
portions of southeast Burlington, Ocean, New Castle, and Salem
Counties. Elsewhere, widespread Minor flooding is forecast.
Coastal flooding is not anticipated along the eastern shore of
Chesapeake Bay.
Coastal Flood Watches have been issued for areas that currently
have a threat of Moderate to Major coastal flooding with the
Saturday afternoon high tide. Upgrades to Warnings and issuance
of Coastal Flood Advisories will come in a future update as
forecast confidence increases.
Modest onshore winds will persist Saturday night into Sunday as
the remnant low of PTC-16 moves northward. This could result in
lingering minor coastal flooding with the Saturday night and
Sunday high tides, especially along back bays that do not drain
well at low tide.
