.SHORT TERM...Today through Monday Afternoon...Satellite imagery
this morning showing cirrus with mid level cloud deck spreading
across the PacNW, while light radar returns are embedded in the
advancing mid level cloud layer. That said, surface observations
indicate that very little to no precip is reaching the ground in
the lower elevations, though light snow has been noted earlier in
the Cascades and is anticipated in the northern Blues.
Today, an upper shortwave trough is progged to impact the PacNW
with light to moderate snow in the mountains, with very little
precipitation expected along foothill locations and virtually
none everywhere else. Recent runs of hi-res model guidance has
ramped up snow production across the interior northern Blues, with
6 to 8 inches of snow accumulation possible through late tonight,
mainly over 4kft. This change is likely owing to the shifting of
a developing upper level jet axis over the PacNW, with the Blue
Mountains positioned under a favorable area of the jet axis that
will promote better uplsoping, and therefore higher snow rates.
Otherwise, the WA Cascades, southern Blues, and higher terrain
across Wallowa County will see 1-2 inches of snow through this
evening. The shortwave trough will also promote breezy to locally
breezy conditions across the lower elevations, with stronger winds
expected along exposed ridges across the northern tier of OR and
southeastern WA. Mountain snow and breezy winds will taper off
overnight tonight as the shortwave dives into central ID, with a
brief period of benign weather conditions into tomorrow morning.
Throughout Sunday and the first half of Monday, a deep upper
level jet max in northwest flow aloft will begin setting up
residency over the PacNW, with weak shortwave impulse energy and
moisture transport embedded within this flow regime. This will
result in mainly light mountain snow and light rain along foothill
locations through this time frame with dry but mostly cloudy
conditions elsewhere. In the lower elevations, tightening pressure
gradients from a surface low passage along the northern Rockies
and the strengthening jet max will produce breezy to gusty
conditions across the lower elevations of the forecast area. Winds
will be especially stronger across the lower Columbia Basin of
OR, the Blue mountain foothills in OR, and the Simcoe Highlands
where wind gusts of 45 to 50 mph will be possible Sunday evening
through Monday morning. Winds will briefly fall below 45 mph late
in the morning Monday, however are anticipated to become much
stronger starting Monday evening and into the extended forecast
period.
Afternoon temperatures will be a few degrees above normal in the
lower elevations and near to below normal in the mountains over
the weekend into Monday; morning lows are expected to remain near

.LONG TERM...Monday night through Saturday...High wind watches will
be issued for the WA/OR Columbia Basin, WA/OR Blue Mtn Foothills,
Simcoe Highlands and North Central Oregon from Monday night through
Tuesday morning. Confidence is high (70 pct) that gusts will reach
50-60 mph and there is a chance (50 pct) that gusts will exceed 60
mph. The strongest winds will occur during the nighttime hours, and
it's best to have lead time for the potentially damaging winds.
ECMWF EFI has bumped up the values to 0.8-0.9 and has a shift of
tails just around 1.0 which indicates the winds may be substantially
strong. There are signs of isentropic descent allowing the strong
winds aloft to reach the surface. NAM12 has 850mb winds of 45-50kts
and 700mb winds of 50-60kts along with a 12mb pressure gradient
between PDX-GEG early Tuesday morning. GFS has gradients as strong
as 13mb.
The polar jet diving south along the mid-latitudes will be
accompanied by a weak AR approaching 500 kg/m/s on the GEFS. The
moist westerly flow will result in snowfall rates of 1-2 inches/hour
for the east slopes of the WA Cascades and 0.5-1.0 inch/hour over
the northern Blue Mountains and the east slopes of the Oregon
Cascades Monday night. Snow levels will lower from 5000 feet to 4000
feet Monday night, then down to 2000 feet on Tuesday. The strong
upper low will be over WA/OR Tuesday and Tuesday night with numerous
mountain snow showers that will be moderate to heavy. All
elevations will have a chance of snow Tuesday night. It's a bit
early to nail down amounts and will hold off a little longer before
issuing any winter highlights. The NBM probabilities of heavy snow
amounts (i.e. 6, 8, 12 inches) on the WSUP Viewer from 12Z Tues-12Z
Wed along the WA/OR Cascades, the Blues and Wallowas are a bit
contradictory to the amounts we have in the forecast with only 20-40
pct probabilities for snow greater than 8 inches. There is also a
fair degree of spread in the meteograms for snow amounts at SMP and
MEH using the GEFS and ECMWF ENS members. Will continue to advertise
the lowering snow levels and travel impacts with social media posts.
A northerly flow aloft and increasing northerly gradient will result
in much colder temperatures Tuesday night through Friday. There were
significant model differences in earlier runs, but they are more in
alignment with the position of the trough over the PacNW. Scattered
snow showers on Wednesday will taper off to isolated mountain snow
showers Wednesday night through Thursday night. There will be
bitterly cold wind chills with the northerly surface winds. Daytime
highs will be in the mid 20s to mid 30s--about 15 degrees below
seasonal average. Overnight lows will be single digits and teens--
around 15 to 20 degrees below seasonal average--and some record lows
may be reached.
At this time, temperatures will rebound closer to seasonal average
on Saturday as the flow shifts to the southwest ahead of an offshore
trough. PoPs will be 20-40 percent on Saturday, and mainly over the
mountains. Snow levels will be slow to climb on Saturday, but there
are hints from the GFS and ECMWF that snow levels will sharply rise
on Sunday. This is past the long term period but may need to be
addressed for hydro concerns if models continue with this synoptic
