.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TONIGHT/...
A generally pleasant day is on deck for the area. An area of
low pressure across the northeast will shift eastward, with high
pressure building across the Great Lakes. Northerly flow
through the day will temperatures climbing not too much from
where they are at dawn. Look for highs in the mid/upper 40s
across the I-80 corridor and high terrain to low/mid 50s
elsewhere. Some upper level cloud cover will filter through the
area but should skirt to the east with time.
Into tonight, mid and upper level cloud cover will be on the
increase as a low pressure system lifts north into the OH Valley
with the warm front lifting into the Upper OH Valley. This will
bring a surge of warm moist air into the region. With surface
temperatures above freezing in most cases in the lower
elevations. Some surface temps into the far northeast and the
eastern high elevations of the forecast area will be near or
around freezing for a brief period of FZRA or snow mixed in just
before 12Z. The longest duration will be in the higher terrain
of Westmoreland, Fayette, and eastern Tucker County. A Winter
Weather Advisory may need to be considered here but road
temperatures have been pretty warm and confidence is low at
this point. Further investigation may be needed here.

.SHORT TERM /FRIDAY THROUGH SATURDAY NIGHT/...
The deepening surface low pressure system will deepen and lift
north into the Ohio Valley Friday morning and then the surface
low track will lead eastward into the Upper OH Valley. This will
lead the warm front east into the area with southeast surface
winds developing across the area. A short duration of clearing
overnight may lead to a few instances of surface air
temperaturesdropping to near or around freezing at onset and
thus will lead to a period of SN/FZRA/IP mixing in with the rain
through Friday morning and even into the afternoon. The only
issue is that surface temps are expected to be above freezing
owing to the extremely above normal temps in the previous weeks
across the area. That said, in the highest terrain in
Westmoreland/Fayette/Tucker, these locations will need further
monitoring for a potential short period of FZRA. A strong warm
nose may preclude this potential coupled with the warmer surface
temps and given the 50th NBM is not showing much ice in the
forecast.
Moving on to the wind potential which the NBM has been
consistent on with the last few days. The strong southeast flow
at 850MB brings in some 50 to 70 knot values by Friday afternoon
and evening and given the inversion in place with the top at
850MB, the stage is set for a strong downslope event into
Indiana/Westmoreland/Fayette counties with 60+ mph winds
possible. Thus have issued a High Wind Watch for these counties
from 18Z to 06Z Friday afternoon into early Friday night. In the
lower elevations and where the ridges do not align
perpendicularly with the southeast flow, ie Tucker, have issued
a Wind Advisory. Confidence at this time is low concerning the
other low land counties elsewhere and will need some further
analysis with the latest model trend.
Concerning the convective and flood potential, once the warm
front has passed through in central OH, mainly between 21Z and
00Z Friday evening, some weak instability develops into central
and southeast OH and a couple counties have been placed in a
Marginal risk for severe weather for wind but given the weak
amount of instability set up and with the profile moistening up
by 00Z go with a low confidence of strong convection and evening
the flood potential has low confidence as QPF values remain
even below 1 HR FFG for Friday evening and Friday night. So will
mention an isolated potential for minor flooding in some known
poor drainage locations.
Colder air will move in behind the cold front on Saturday with
some showers and snow showers possible through the day. Impacts
are expected to be nil to none concerning this. The post frontal
winds will be something to consider as well with some 30 to 40
mph northwest winds possible.

.LONG TERM /SUNDAY THROUGH THURSDAY/...
Sunday will be a pleasant day for the forecast area as high pressure
builds underneath upper-level ridging. This wont be long-lived
however as the high pressure retreats with the approach of another
area of low pressure developing across the Plains and Midwest.
Light rain is expected to overspread the Upper Ohio Valley as this
low crosses late Monday into Tuesday morning. Cold air advection
following this system will bring cooler air, near or below-average
temps, back to the area from midweek onward. This will occur under
an amplifying synoptic pattern, with ridging deepening across the
central CONUS with troughing on the coasts.
While still far out, models are suggesting a deep low pressure
system will approach the area by late next week. This would likely
be the next opportunity for a widespread rain event.

.AVIATION /19Z THURSDAY THROUGH TUESDAY/...
Prevailing VFR is anticipated through the afternoon hours
across the upper Ohio terminals. Gusty N-NW wind will persist
until we decouple tonight. There may be a brief period of MVFR
cigs at KFKL and KDUJ overnight where the cloud deck remains to
our north until the wind shift toward morning.
Low pressure and its associated warm front then will lift
through the region Friday, which should bring a period of rain
and restrictions. At this time, the timing of precip onset
appears to be late enough to limit mixed precipitation concerns,
so will leave this out of the TAFs. The bigger issue will be
gusty to strong easterly wind, including potential downslope
wind near LBE and LLWS at several locations late Friday.
Precipitation chances will diminish through the day Saturday
with a return to VFR conditions areawide by Sunday under high
pressure.
