.SYNOPSIS...
Temperatures will be in the 50s to mid 60s with breezy west to
southwest winds this afternoon. Wednesday through next weekend has
the potential to be significantly cooler with at or below average
temperatures and the chances for rain and snow. Low elevation
snow for will be possible by Wednesday morning for much of the
region. Travel impacts will occur over mountain passes by Tuesday
night with the potential for snow at the passes through the rest
of the work week.

.DISCUSSION...

...FIRST MODERATE SNOW EVENT FOR THE REGION TUESDAY AFTERNOON
THROUGH WEDNESDAY...

Today and Tonight: Trough is digging into southern California. The
big forecast challenge comes with the system beginning to form in
British Columbia that will move into the area Tuesday. Before
that, we will start off the week with some morning fog across
northeast WA and north ID valleys. We will see some clouds through
the morning, but then some partially clearing skies through the
afternoon and evening hours before thicker clouds begin to stream
in and lower overnight. Temperatures continue their downward
trend. Highs today will be in the mid 50s to mid 60s, which is
still about 5 degrees above average. Enjoy it. It will be the last
day of above average temperatures for at least the next week.

Winds will increase from the west to southwest today peaking in
the late afternoon and early evening. Probabilities of seeing
gusts to 30 mph or higher are 20% for the West Plains, 40% for
Omak, and generally 80% or higher for the Columbia Basin, around
Pullman, south of Omak, and the Waterville Plateau. Have added
some patchy blowing dust across the Waterville Plateau and in the
basin from Royal City west towards Vantage.

There is a 30-60% chance of rain today across extreme northeast WA
and the ID Panhandle. The higher of those probabilities are in the
mountains and as well as generally I90 northward in Idaho. Through
the evening the precip chances will move out of the ID Panhandle,
and the focus will move to the Cascades and the next system
beginning to move in. Temperatures will remain steady through the
day in the Cascades and after sunset begin to lower to near
freezing. Snow will occur across Stevens Pass tonight. The
question becomes how effective will snow accumulation occur? Given
temps will still be lowering, even though HREF is showing some
decent snow rates early Tuesday morning, currently only have about
an inch of snowfall overnight. This matches the NBM idea of a 74%
chance of an inch or more through 5am Tuesday. If snowfall becomes
moderate to heavy in nature, accumulations could increase as road
temps will cool much quicker and snow will begin to stick and not
melt. The NBM does show a 48% chance of 2 inches of snow or more,
and a 8% chance of 4 inches or more through 5am Tuesday morning.

Temps really take a dive Monday night into Tuesday morning with
lows in the upper 20s to upper 30s, which is right around average.

Tuesday through Sunday: Models continue to move strong Low
pressure center through the Pacific Northwest bringing a push of
cold, moist air. Ensembles have decent agreement on the timing and
track of the system. The Low will begin to impact the region
starting midday Tuesday and continue through Wednesday and track
over southern Washington. With 500mb heights near 5400m and
subzero 850mb temperatures over the Inland Northwest, the upper
level conditions are pointing to mountain snow and lowland wintry
mix conditions. The mountain passes could start to see snow
starting late Tuesday afternoon. The rest of the Inland Northwest
will start as rain and transition to wintry mix overnight.

Snow amounts across the region have decreased slightly from previous
forecast but still expected to potentially cause travel impacts.
Highest snow amounts still remain in the mountain passes. Cascades
mountain passes have at least 80% probability of at least 3 inches
and 40% probability of 6 inches snow through Wednesday. Sherman and
Lookout Passes has around 50% chance for 3 inches or more. For the
lower elevations, the northern valleys have at least a 40% chance of
two inches. Spokane to Wenatchee have a 30% probability of two
inches. The lower Central Columbia Basin has a 40% chance for one
inch. Slick driving conditions are possible over mountain passes.
Icy patches could impact Wednesday morning commutes on area roadways
but is expected to be very isolated as surface temperatures are
still above freezing. Winds will also become breezy with the passage
of the Low with gusts into the 30s expected across the Basin and
northern valleys.

After Wednesday, a shallow ridge pattern will build off the coast
and bring a dry period through the end of the week. Ensembles expect
another system late Friday and Saturday. It is more disorganized
than the Tuesday system. It will cause intermittent snow showers
across the region. Accumulations are expected to be less than an
inch. High pressure will begin to build into the region on Sunday
and bring a cold, dry spell for the region.

Tuesdays highs will be the warmest with 40s to low 50s. Overnight
temperatures on Tuesday night will drop into the  20s and low 30s
with the Low passing. Highs for the rest of the period will be in
the 40s. Overnight lows will be in the upper teens and 20s into the
weekend. Precautions should be taken to protect anything susceptible
to freezing temperatures. /JDC

12Z TAFS: Low stratus and fog has developed overnight across NE
WA and north ID valleys. This include CQV, DEW, SZT, COE, SFF and
GEG with MVFR stratus cigs and LIFR cigs in the fog. Otherwise
some spotty sprinkles and/or showers with a disturbance dropping
down from the northwest Monday morning after 15Z may also reach
KGEG and vicinity but this isn't coded in TAFs as not much is
expected to measure if it does occur. Increase in west to
southwest winds with the boundary moving through near 20Z and a
decrease beginning aft 03Z Tuesday.
