.SYNOPSIS...
Light mountain snow showers will persist overnight into Sunday.
Significant snow looks to impact travel across the mountain
passes Sunday evening into early next week. Gusty winds also
expected at times, especially Monday and Tuesday. Lowland snow
potential increases Tuesday, followed by a blustery blast of cold
temperatures for Wednesday and Thursday. Slowly moderating
temperatures are expected by the end of the week.

.DISCUSSION...
Quick update: Convective showers popped up across southeast WA and
parts of north ID early this evening with reports of graupel and
snow. These showers will linger over the central ID Panhandle
overnight with light accumulations. Otherwise skies will partially
clear during the overnight allowing for radiational cooling and
slightly cooler temperatures than seen last night. /rfox.
...Significant mountain snow early next week, then potentially
record cold temperatures combined with brisk wind chills coming to
the Inland NW mid-week...
Tonight through Monday: Precip chances generally coming to an end
overnight, though chances will linger longest across far SE
Washington and the central ID Panhandle. By Sunday afternoon, a
disturbance will bring mountain snow and gusty winds, though the
better potential for snow accumulating at the passes will look
better after nightfall as road surface temps may delay
accumulation for a while. Winter weather highlights have been
issued this afternoon for the likelihood of significant mountain
snowfall along the Cascades and the Central Panhandle mountains of
ID covering a period between Sunday night through Tuesday night.
As this is anticipated to be a prolonged event, we could certainly
be talking about snowfall in terms of feet and not inches for
elevations above 3500 feet. Gusty west-southwest winds through
the period will favor the Cascade gaps, upper Columbia Basin, the
Palouse, and of course exposed higher terrain. /KD
Monday night through Saturday: Big change in the weather pattern
during this period as the eastern Pacific high moves back to the
west allowing a deep trough of low pressure to develop over the
western US. The strong northwesterly jet aloft will become more
westerly Monday night. This will increase the upslope in the
Cascades and Panhandle mountains for heavy snow in the passes. A
winter storm watch has been issued for this period. There will
also be strong winds mainly south of I-90 Monday night and Tuesday
morning as the jet stream sags southward through the region.
Damaging winds are possible over southeast Washington and the
southern Panhandle.
During the day on Tuesday an arctic front will push into the area
from the northeast. The front will enter the northern Panhandle
during the morning hours. Valley precipitation will change from
rain or wet snow to all snow as temperatures drop rapidly. This
could result in flash freezing on the roads. The arctic front
should reach the Spokane area by late Tue afternoon, and then
spread into the Basin Tue evening. This is not a good pattern for
heavy snow in our area, but 1 to 3 inches of valley snow is
expected for Bonners Ferry to Republic, southward to Ritzville and
Pullman. The strong northeast winds could cause some drifting snow
Tuesday night and Wednesday.
Winds will decrease Wednesday night allowing temperatures to drop
into the single digits by Thursday morning. Skies won't clear so
that will keep nighttime temperatures warmer than they would be
with clear skies. Highs on Thursday will only be in to the teens
and lower 20s. Normally I would expect Friday would be the coldest
day, but there's so much clouds streaming into the area in the
northwest flow that it's hard to tell exactly how cold it will be
on Friday. Another system drops into the area next weekend for
more snow mainly in the Cascades and Panhandle. RJ

06Z TAFS: Convective showers will linger over the central ID
Panhandle overnight with local MVFR conditions in the higher
elevations. VFR conditions prevail this evening in most areas.
Deteriorating conditions are likely across extreme eastern WA as
MVFR deck fills after 15Z. Light snow showers/flurries will
increase from north ID into extreme eastern WA while southwest
winds pick up speed with gusts to 25 mph in the afternoon. Central
WA should remain VFR with high cirrus. /rfox.
