.SYNOPSIS...
A ridge of high pressure will bring dry weather morning fog to the
valleys. Areas of dense fog is expected over portions of northeast
Washington and into the Idaho Panhandle. Unsettled weather will
then return Thursday night through early next week. Precipitation
will fall primarily as valley rain and mountain snow. Winter
travel conditions are likely in the Cascades over Stevens Pass and
Washington Pass tonight and again Friday night into Saturday.
There also will be widespread breezy to gusty winds on Saturday.
Temperatures will trend above average Saturday through next week.

.DISCUSSION...

Today: Widespread fog and low stratus cover has developed across the
valleys of northeast Washington and in the Idaho Panhandle, which
includes the Highway 2 corridor between Coulee City to Spokane and
Highway 95 from Coeur d'Alene to Sandpoint. Areas of dense fog is
also being observed across these highway corridors with temperatures
down into the mid 20s to low 30s. Dense freezing fog may result in
black ice and slick roads during the commute this morning. A dense
fog advisory has been issued across the northern portions of the
Upper Columbia Basin, Spokane/Coeur d'Alene Area, and North Idaho.
Visibility down to 1/4 mile or less in dense fog is expected across
these areas with hazardous driving conditions through this morning.
Fog is expected to burn off between 10AM-12PM today as easterly
winds begin to pick up a little bit with a frontal system
approaching in the eastern Pacific.

Thursday night through Friday night: A shortwave trough of lower
pressure will break down the ridge with an occluded front bringing
light precipitation across the region. Precipitation will primarily
fall as rain in the valleys and snow in the mountains above 3,000
feet. An exception will be around Republic and colder pockets in the
northern valleys of the Northeast Mountains and the Northern
Panhandle where a rain/snow mix is expected. Precipitation will be
light that impacts to travel are expected to be minimal. Minor
impacts over mountain passes will be possible however, mainly for
Stevens Pass, Washington Pass, Sherman Pass, and Lookout Pass
overnight Thursday into Friday morning. Below are the probabilities
for a few thresholds at these passes:

Based on the above probabilities, best potential for impacts over
the mountain passes will be over Washington Pass and Stevens Pass
where a range of 3 to 6 inches is expected and more like 1 to 3
expected over Lookout Pass. Travelers over these passes should
expect to see winter travel conditions overnight Thursday into
Friday. A precipitation shadow in the lee of the Cascades will
result in much lighter snowfall at Loup Loup Pass and Blewett Pass
where less than an inch is expected.

Precipitation will decrease late through the afternoon on Friday
into Friday evening. Showers will linger over the Idaho Panhandle
and along the Cascade crest though. Precipitation chance will
increase however overnight on Friday with as a warm front moves into
the Inland Northwest. This will begin to ramp of snowfall over the
higher terrain of the Cascades and specifically over Stevens Pass
and Washington Pass. Continue on in the discussion for impacts with
this next storm. /SVH

Saturday: A trough will move along the US/Canadian border
Saturday. This will be accompanied with a very strong 140+kt jet
which will bring windy conditions to much of the region during the
day. Winds will increase through the morning, peak in the
afternoon and decrease after sunset. NBM has greater than a 90%
chance of gusts 35 mph or higher for areas south of Omak down onto
the Waterville Plateau and across much of Lincoln and Adams
counties. Probabilities of specific locations of gusts 35 mph or
greater: Spokane airport and Pullman 90%, Coeur d Alene 40%,
Lewiston and Sandpoint 15%, Moses Lake 50%, Omak 60%, Wenatchee
70%. The areas the NBM is designating as high probabilities (85%
or higher) of greater than 40 mph wind gusts is the northern
Waterville Plateau (areas north of Highway 2), areas mainly south
of I90 across Adams county, including Highway 395, and the Blue
Mountains towards Alpowa Summit. Some cities to keep an eye on are
Pullman with a 60% chance of gusts 40 mph or greater, Wenatchee
45%, Spokane/CdA area 50%.

With this strong west to east oriented jet, we will see strong
upslope flow into the Cascades. Precipitation amounts along the
crest and the north ID Panhandle have increased. Snow levels start
out 3500-4000 ft and increase 500-1000 ft through the day.
Thankfully this is a mountain snow event. There may be some snow
mixed with rain the in the northern valleys, but no accumulation
is expected. Moderate to heavy snow amounts is expected for
Washington Pass throughout the day. With the dynamics and strong
jet along the Canadian border, the impact is only to Washington
Pass. Stevens will see some light snow-a couple inches at best.
The other passes like Loup Loup and Lookout will see very light
amounts of an inch or less, with Sherman seeing around 2 inches.

The best chance of precipitation will be across the northern
counties of WA and ID. As you move into central and southern WA
chances decrease, however there looks to be decent lapse rates and
higher probabilities of showers in the afternoon region wide.

Sunday through Thursday: A big low will move out of the Gulf of
Alaska and down the eastern Pacific towards the west coast. This
will pump up some warmer air from the south into our region. Snow
levels will rise further bringing rounds of light valley rain and
mountain snow to the region. Sunday and Monday the best chance of
precip is across the mountains. Tuesday through Thursday
precipitation chances increase region wide as the trough nears
the west coast and we see an increase in moisture from the
southwest. Temperatures will near to above average. Lows will be
in the 30s generally, with mid 20s for the northern valleys, and
around 40 in the LC Valley. Highs will be in the mid 40s to mid

18Z TAFS: Fog is gradually lifting for the Spokane/Coeur d'Alene
corridor into the Northern Panhandle as temperatures warm. VFR
conditions are expected regionwide by 21Z. For tonight, an
occluded front will spread light precipitation across the Inland
Northwest resulting in MVFR to IFR conditions and a mix of
rain/snow in the mountain valleys of northeast Washington and
North Idaho.TAFs are largely based on satellite trends. Models are
not initializing moisture in the boundary layer well.
