.SYNOPSIS...Light rain is forecast through morning, traveling
southward past the Central Coast. By tonight, the highest total
rain will be along the Big Sur Coast. Chilly morning lows through
the weekend, except on Sunday in the North Bay, where offshore
winds above 2000 feet will assist in keeping more mild low
temperatures. Drier conditions expected early next week before the
next chance for light rain and cold temperatures midweek.

.DISCUSSION...as of 09:25 AM PST Saturday...On radar this
morning, it's very easy to see the center of the low due to the
rotation of this morning's showers. The low is currently centered
just west of San Jose as light showers spin counter-clockwise
around portions of the East Bay and SF Peninsula then over the
ocean and then swing back inland around the Monterey Bay region.
North Bay is fairly dry now as that low is tracking slowly
southward today although a few light showers are occasionally
hitting southern Marin County. Rain totals across North Bay from
this system were generally less than a tenth of an inch to around
a quarter of an inch along the coastal mountains.

Totals so far to the south have been generally around a third of
an inch down to a few hundredths, but a few locations in East Bay
where showers popped up are around a half inch and coastal areas
along the SF Peninsula have a few spots between 0.30" to 0.50".

Santa Cruz Mountains have seen up to around a third of an inch
while the Monterey Peninsula and Big Sur mountains have ranged
from a few hundredths up to around a third of an inch.

On and off showers will continue with the Monterey County
coastline likely getting the most of the rain today. We still have
mention of slight chance of thunderstorms for this afternoon.
Thus far, we haven't seen any lightning activity, but hi-res
models indicate that instability will be better by late morning
into afternoon.

High Surf Advisory remains in effect along most of the coast,
with a Beach Hazards Statement out for Northern Monterey Bay
(around Santa Cruz County beaches). Use caution if heading to the
coast today!

.PREV DISCUSSION...as of 4:00 AM PST Saturday...Monitoring a low pressure
system over northern California, its center located over the Bay
Area and moving southward, undergoing strengthening i.e. lowering
500 mb heights (cooling) while surface pressures across the Bay
Area and north Central Coast are lowering ~ 0.5 mb to 1 mb per
hour. The low is cradled in a digging (southward moving) polar jet
stream.

Showers continue to develop in the cold core low with the highest
echo tops increasing to 15-17 thousand feet over the Bay Area. At
present, showers are producing less than 0.10" per hour, but may
become locally moderate to heavy. The cold core low, instability
aloft and westerly wind with a maritime influence (ocean effect
enhancement to the precipitation) will bring more precipitation
inland, however as the low moves southward so too will the area of
precipitation move southward from late morning to afternoon.
Freezing levels and wet bulb zero heights are low with this
system, varying mostly in the 2500 to 3000 feet range, this
supports snow across the highest coastal terrain, upwards of 2-4
inches over the highest elevations of the Santa Lucia Mountains/Big
Sur, with light accumulations over the Santa Cruz Mountains as
well. Currently it's 28F on Chews Ridge and 32F on Anderson Peak.
Highs today in the 50s lower elevations, 40s/30s at higher
elevations.

Dry northeasterly winds develop by tonight and continue Sunday in
the wake of the aforementioned low, compressional warming sending
850 mb temperatures back up resulting in milder daytime temps in

Then, the next downturn in temperatures arrives late Monday,
Monday night and Tuesday with gusty northerly winds at the onset
of cold air advection especially over the coastal waters, but with
coastal land overlap. Early yet for a high wind watch, but will
monitor subsequent forecasts especially for later Monday winds
along the coastal sections. Otherwise seeing deterministic,
ensemble agreement for a period of well below mid February normal
temperatures next week, by as much as 12 to 15 degrees below
normal, near record lows potentially mid to late next week. The
northerly flow mostly limiting chances of precipitation during the
cold frontal passage.

.AVIATION...as of 9:20 AM Saturday...For the 18Z TAFs. Scattered
showers continue in the SF Bay Area down through the Monterey Bay
terminals and into southern Monterey County, with occasional MVFR
ceilings within the showers and even some IFR visibilities in the
most intense rain. The showers should clear form the SF Bay Area in
a couple of hours but may linger around Monterey Bay into the
afternoon, with a slight chance (15% probability) of thunderstorms
in western Monterey County. Then VFR predominates. Breezy winds will
pick up in a northeasterly pattern after the showers move out, with
winds diminishing overnight. Winds will pick up in a northwesterly
pattern again during the day on Sunday.

Vicinity of SFO...Predominantly VFR through the TAF period.
Scattered showers with MVFR ceilings through the next couple of
hours or so. Then winds pick up from the northeast topping out at
around 15 knots through the evening. Low confidence (20%
probability) in gusts above 20 knots. Winds diminish around 3-4z
this evening, then pick up again from the northwest on Sunday.

SFO Bridge Approach...Similar to SFO.

Monterey Bay...Predominantly VFR throughout the TAF period. Winds
generally light and variable today, with scattered showers and a 15%
chance of thunderstorms around the western half of Monterey County
through the afternoon. Drainage winds picking up overnight.

.MARINE...as of 08:43 AM PST Saturday...Gale force gusts over the
outer waters through the day. Scattered showers pushing off to the
south by this evening with a slight  chance of thunderstorms over
the southern waters. Northerly winds  diminish into Sunday, but
remain breezy and increase again by  midweek. Large swell at
around 14 to 16 seconds creating large  breaking waves near the
surf zone through the evening. Another  long- period swell arrives
on Sunday.
