.SYNOPSIS...Post frontal rain showers and isolated
thunderstorms will continue into at last the first half of
Thursday. Thursday night and early Friday looks to be a bit of a
break day, but then subsequent weather systems are projected to
bring additional precipitation and periods of stronger winds this
weekend and next week.
&&
.DISCUSSION...as of 08:27 AM PST Thursday...Post frontal conditions
are allowing for scattered showers and a few storms to pass
through the area. These chances will linger for much of the day,
but will begin to taper off into the night. Light to moderate
rainfall rates are expected with these showers, with locally
higher rates possible within isolated storm cells. The forecasting
team will continue to keep eyes on these showers and storms
through the day, but the afternoon forecast package will be mostly
focused on the next storm system coming through over the weekend
and the continued wet pattern that lasts through the long term
forecast.

.PREV DISCUSSION...as of 03:43 AM PST Thursday...The region is
currently in a bit of a lull with regards to widespread
precipitation this morning as the main cold front and associated
atmospheric river has push to the south and inland. Additionally,
damaging winds across the region during the past 12-18 hours
continue to gradually diminish, especially in the region's lower
elevations. Thus, the High Wind Warning has been canceled with a
Wind Advisory now in effect for the region's higher terrain where
wind gusts continue in the 40 to 65 mph range. These winds look to
diminish as well through the remainder of the morning.
That said, the core of the mid/upper level low that drove the
frontal boundary into the region late Wednesday afternoon/evening
remains off of the Pacific Northwest coast. As such, a cooler and
unstable air mass will continue to advect across the region through
at least the first half of the day allowing for additional showers
and isolated thunderstorms. Our next wave of rain showers is already
being picked out over the Pacific and is expected to move into the
North Bay later this morning and then into the remainder of the
region after sunrise before becoming a bit more isolated in nature
into the afternoon. Moderate to brief heavy rainfall will remain
possible with rainfall amounts in the 0.10" to 0.50" range with the
coastal ranges picking up to around 1.00". Rainfall today will be
more spotty in nature, yet any addition rain over already saturated
soils will result flooding concerns. Thus, will hold on to the Flood
Watch through this afternoon or at least until the threat for
precipitation diminishes as minor flooding continues over portions
of the region.
Drier conditions are anticipated for Thursday night into Friday as
the one system exits and another, on the heels of the current
system, approaches from the northwest. Light rain may return as
early as Friday morning over the North Bay before spreading
southward while also increasing in coverage and intensity on
Saturday. This system is expected to bring another round of
widespread rainfall and gusty winds to the region through Sunday
with another arriving on Monday. These back-to-back systems will
continue to pose a threat for flooding concerns region-wide along
with periods of strong, gusty winds. When all said and done, we are
looking at several more inches of rainfall through the middle of
next week with moderate to high confidence of even more rain through
mid-month. Stay tuned to the latest information as we work nail down
the details in the coming days.

.AVIATION...As of 9:35 AM Thursday... For the 18Z TAFs. VFR/MVFR
predominant with widespread low ceilings from 2000 to 5000 AGL,
continuing throughout the day and reduced visibilities in areas of
rain. Radar is showing showers across the region which are expected
to move out of the region around 22-23z with more scattered
activity, expecially in the North Bay, into the late afternoon.
Winds generally from the southwest, expected to continue diminishing
throughout the day. The North Bay may see showers overnight, but the
rest of the region remains dry with VFR/MVFR continuing. A new
system is expected to arrive late on Friday and into Saturday after
the end of the TAF period.
Vicinity of SFO... MVFR/VFR prevails with ceilings around 3000 feet
AGL. Showery rain expected to continue until around 21-22z. Gusty
winds from the south to the southwest expected to subside throughout
the day. Slight chance of a shower tonight, with MVFR conditions
continuing. Friday will bring southerly winds with gusts up to 22
knots as a new system approaches.
SFO Bridge Approach... Similar to SFO.
Monterey Bay... MVFR to VFR conditions continue with showers moving
out by 22-23z. Winds from the southwest are diminishing through the
day. Winds turn southeast tonight with SNS expected to see sustained
winds up to 15 knots as the valley draingage flow aligns with the
general pre-frontal wind pattern.

.MARINE...as of 09:38 AM PST Thursday...An unstable airmass behind
a cold front has brought thunderstorms over the coastal waters
this morning. Scattered showers will continue through the day
with a slight chance of thunderstorms. Gale force winds have
subsided as low pressure weakens to the north. Hazardous westerly
swell of 20 to 25 feet is building into the waters and will peak
today. A weak ridge of high pressure will briefly bring dry
weather tonight. Wet weather returns late Friday through Sunday
with a return of possible gale force winds.
