.DISCUSSION...Low clouds on Wednesday plagued the lower valleys of
north-central Idaho and also across northwest Montana. This
resulted in cooler highs...both Orofino and Kamiah only reached 32
degrees. This morning's satellite loop reveals two things: the
first is the continuation of low clouds in the aforementioned
locations and secondly there is a weak wave moving across Idaho
which is spreading middle clouds eastward.
Several more shortwaves will traverse the region Thursday night
through Friday night and will bring periods of light snow.
By Saturday morning, the nose of a 135 knot upper jet will work
in tandem with a plume of moisture and increased synoptic lift to
ramp up mountain snowfall rates. Periods of heavy snow are
anticipated from northern Clearwater Mountains to points north and
east into the northwest Montana mountains during the day
Saturday. One piece to this forecast that may be difficult to nail
down is the transition from snow to rain in north-central Idaho.
By daybreak Saturday, there is a 60 to 70 percent probability that
snow will changeover to rain Orofino to Syringa as snow levels
gradually rise. There could be a period where snow rates will be
heavy enough that Lowell stays all snow then changes over to rain.
There is a slight risk for freezing rain during this transition,
but the rain may just get soaked up in the precursor snow. Besides
the potentially slick, and low visibility travel through the I-90
corridor west of Saltese towards Lookout Pass, and US-12 from
Lolo Pass west to Powell, other locations may be able to
transition to rain (50 percent chance) including Highway 200 west
of Dixon. The probability for snow amounts in travel areas to
exceed a foot of snow over the weekend include 40 to 60 percent in
the Elk River, Idaho area, 90 percent at Lookout Pass, and 60
percent at Lolo Pass.
It doesn't stop there because there is yet another moist system
that could bring more wet weather on Sunday! While mountain snows
continue, the snow levels will be rising to 3000 to 5000 feet.
This means that there could be continued chance for freezing rain.
The strong wind gradient would suggest that some of the larger
valleys will get downsloped, but due to the nature of the moist
plume, precipitation should continue to fall as the atmosphere is
very saturated. Even despite air temperatures starting to rise
above freezing, cold ground temperatures(thanks to the recent sub-
freezing cold pool generation) will aid in the falling rain to
freeze on untreated surfaces. There might be some improvement by
Sunday afternoon, but with nightfall, some locations may freeze
back up. So one take- home for the weekend is be watchful for
black ice!
Milder temperatures are forecast for the valleys early next week,
but there is a 70 percent probability for another plume of
moisture to impact the northern Clearwater mountains into
northwest Montana by Tuesday and Wednesday with snow levels
ranging between 6000 and 7000 feet.

.AVIATION...Low stratus with variable ceilings will persist across
northwest Montana including KGPI, and also across north-central
Idaho today. Fog will be possible in the remaining valleys
including KMSO. A pattern change is expected today into Friday as
several upper level waves will bring mid clouds, and light
snowfall to the region. The incoming clouds should be able to
start to bring some dissipation of the persistent low clouds in
the area. Other terminals from Hamilton to Butte to Salmon will
mostly experience VFR conditions today.
