.DISCUSSION...Satellite imagery from the overnight hours unveils
an extensive cloud cover that stretches across the region, and
this cloudiness is expected to persist for the majority of the
day. Isolated showers also continue to be observed, which will
linger through the morning. According to multiple high-
resolution models, showers are forecast to develop this afternoon,
mainly concentrated north of Highway 12, coinciding with the
passage of a shortwave trough.
Model guidance maintain a high likelihood for an impressive early
winter storm system to journey from Canada southward, cutting
through the Northern Rockies starting on Tuesday afternoon and
continuing its impact through at least Wednesday evening.
Arctic air will gradually infiltrate northwest Montana early on
Tuesday afternoon, leading to snow accumulation that could create
challenging travel conditions over Marias Pass.
The snow will then advance southward across west-central Montana
through Tuesday evening. Lolo Pass and Evaro Hill will each
experience the effects of a few inches of snow.
Late on Tuesday evening and into the night, the mid-level low
pressure system in Washington will intensify rapidly. This
intensification will result in a substantial band of snow
developing. This potential band of snow is just entering the
forecast hours where the placement and evolution can be forecast
with some accuracy. At this time the band is forecast to stretch
from the Continental Divide near MacDonald Pass all the way across
to central Idaho. This band will gradually move southward through
Lemhi County and Southwest Montana, with its presence largely
diminishing in the region by Wednesday afternoon.
There is a high likelihood (70-90%) that the following mountain
passes will receive 4-8 inches of snow from late Tuesday afternoon
through Wednesday afternoon: Lookout, Lolo, MacDonald, Homestake,
Lost Trail.
Depending on how quickly cold air settles into the region, most
valley locations have a high probability (greater than 90%) for
accumulating snow from late Tuesday afternoon through Wednesday
around noon, progressing from north to south. There's a 50-70%
chance of receiving 1-2 inches of snow in places like the Flathead
and Missoula valleys. Additionally, there is a 10-20% chance of
receiving up to 3 inches of snow in these valleys.
Higher elevated valleys are more likely (60-80%) to receive 3-6
inches of snow, with the potential for even higher accumulations,
especially at Georgetown Lake and Butte. Driving along the I-90
corridor from Bearmouth to Anaconda may become hazardous.
Lower valleys across central Idaho will initially escape the
snowfall on Tuesday night due to slightly warmer conditions.
However, colder air following the front will lead to impacts on
Wednesday afternoon. Snowfall behind the front will affect the
Camas Prairie in Idaho, thanks to a northerly flow that favors
snow in Grangeville. Although there's some uncertainty in this
prediction, it's worth noting that the probabilities reach 30% for
2 inches or more of snow.
The snow forecast for Thursday through Saturday presents a varied
range of potential snowfall amounts. Model clusters, primarily
led by the GFS, suggest a slower progression of the low-pressure
system, which could lead to sustained and potentially impactful
snow accumulations.
The cold air isn't going anywhere through the upcoming weekend.
High temperatures will hover in the low to mid-30s, with lows in
the upper single digits to the mid-teens. In fact, areas across
southwest Montana, like Butte, and along the Continental Divide
will experience temperatures in the lower single digits by Friday
and Saturday mornings.

.AVIATION...Overnight satellite imagery reveals a widespread
presence of stratus clouds trapped within the valleys across the
entire region, and isolated showers continue to be observed on
the radar. Several valley observations have indicated saturated
conditions, accompanied by sporadic fog patches. However, the
visibility reductions caused by this fog are expected to be
sporadic and brief, thanks to a northeasterly pressure gradient
that hinders atmospheric stability.
As we move into the afternoon, numerous high-resolution models
predict the likelihood of showers, primarily concentrated to the
north of Highway 12, coinciding with the passage of a shortwave
trough.
