.DISCUSSION...Light precipitation will continue throughout most of
Western Montana and the Clearwater Mountains of Idaho today with
northwest flow aloft. Temperatures are mild for this time of year
but most of that precipitation will fall as very light snow till
the afternoon when rain may mix in. Road reports from around the
area have mentioned black ice from melted precipitation freezing
on road surfaces. These conditions may continue through 9-10am
this morning.
This evening milder Pacific air will creep northward, the exact
position of the Jet stream will dictate how far north warmer air
will move. Suffice it to say, snow levels will creep up in most
locations with an average of 3500 feet in northwest Montana, 4000
feet along the I-90 corridor, and close to 5000 feet south of
I-90. This will allow for rain to mix in this evening for many but
northwest Montana may remain all snow, albeit a very wet snow. In
traditional locations where the ground stays cold, expect pockets
of ice as drizzle or light rain may freeze on contact, especially
east of Missoula on I-90.
Area Mountains and passes will quickly see precipitation intensity
increase overnight. By midnight at Marias Pass there is a 60%
probability of moderate snowfall, greater than 0.50" per hour of
snow, and by 3 to 4 am at Lookout Pass. If your travels take you
over Marias, Lookout, or Lolo Passes, or along US-12 Lowell, ID
to Lolo Pass, please plan accordingly for changing road
conditions Monday morning.
The arrival of an atmospheric river of moisture remains on track
for Monday. Heavy mountain and mountain pass snow is expected to
develop Monday evening and continue at least through midday
Tuesday. Gusty westerly winds are also expected Monday night
through Tuesday morning before switching to northeasterly with the
passage of the arctic front.
Deterministic and ensemble model guidance are in good agreement
on the timing of the arctic front passage, which is forecast to
move through northwest Montana Tuesday morning, west-central
Montana Tuesday afternoon and evening, and north-central Idaho and
Lemhi County Tuesday evening through Tuesday night. Significant
impacts are still possible in northwest Montana with the arctic
front due gusty winds, heavy snow, and blowing snow causing
blizzard like conditions. Locations most likely to experience
these conditions are along the Highway 2 corridor, including the
Flathead Valley and especially east of Kalispell through Marias
Pass.
Valley locations in the rest of western Montana maintain a
forecast of mild temperatures ahead of the arctic, followed by a
burst of snow with the front and increasing potential for a flash
freeze situation, where wet and snow covered surfaces rapidly
freeze and become icy with the gusty winds and abrupt temperature
drop. Many of the projections for the arctic front show it
passing through the Interstate 90 corridor, including the Missoula
Valley, during the evening commute, which in the past has
resulted in significant impacts to travel.
Moisture becomes limited once the front reaches Idaho, so at this
time the snow impacts with the passage of the arctic front look
to be isolated and gusty winds and cold are expected to be the
main impacts with and behind the front.
Cold wind chills on Wednesday will have the potential to cause
frost bite in 30 minutes or less, especially along the Divide. It
is common for dry air to overtake the region behind an arctic
front but this one is showing up a little differently. Model
guidance show a mid-level low pressure center to be over the
region with moisture moving into the region from the east. Deep
cold air in place is not favorable for snowflake production, but
light snow is possible with the incoming moisture. This moisture
also means that cloudy skies are likely.

.AVIATION...Very light snow is continuing to show on radar and
local terminal observations currently. This activity may increase
briefly around daybreak as shown on high resolution model output.
A brief degradation in visibility and ceiling can be expected. By
afternoon, a strong jet streak will be positioned over the
Northern Rockies, expect wind shear of 30 to 40 kts from
2000-5000 feet AGL at local terminals. A powerful winter storm is
expected to begin to impact the Northern Rockies overnight
tonight, at the onset most impacts will be in the higher terrain
but lower ceilings and degraded visibility will be common at KGPI
and KMSO after 20/0500z.
