.DISCUSSION...

Some snow showers are already increasing across the region this
afternoon. Across much of central Idaho and western Montana snow
will continue through Saturday morning. Snow rates will start to
increase tonight which has prompted us to issue some advisories
across the region. Then, Friday snow rates will generally
increase across the region followed by an Arctic front coming
across the Continental Divide Friday night and Saturday morning.
This system as a whole will have several impacts.

Lookout Pass to Nine Mile and much of central Idaho, including
Clearwater County and the mountains of Idaho County in Idaho,
will have heavy snow lasting almost 48 hours. Much of western
Montana is under the risk of a flash freeze on area roadways once
the Arctic arrives Friday afternoon and evening. Highway 2 from
Marias Pass to the Flathead Valley is a major concern for an
isolated area of blizzard like conditions with snow, strong winds,
cold wind chills, and poor visibility from Friday night into
Saturday morning.

Winter weather advisories and warnings have been issued for the
expected impacts. In areas where we have both an advisory and a
warning, the timing is different to indicate when the impacts
elevate from the advisory level to the more serious warning level.

As snowfall wraps up, the attention will turn to dangerously cold
temperatures behind an Arctic cold front. A strong upper-level
ridge in the Pacific Ocean, just offshore of the US west coast,
will allow this Arctic air to sink down into the Northern Rockies.
Confidence is high on a very cold period beginning Saturday night
and lasting through at least Tuesday morning. Ensemble guidance
shows a retreat of the coldest Arctic air by Tuesday. Now, do not
expect a quick warm up beyond Tuesday, especially with strong cold
pools in place. There is uncertainty on how quickly the cold
moderates, as these cold pools will be difficult to erode. It does
appear that the NBM is likely warming things up too quickly
through the end of next week. Bottom line, cold will be hazardous
to people, pets, and livestock through the middle of next week at
a minimum.

As for the overall magnitude of the cold air, multiple nights of
low temperatures well below zero are likely. The coldest
temperatures are expected along the Continental Divide, where
overnight lows will fall between 20 and 30 below zero. These
coldest temperatures can also be anticipated in traditionally cold
places, like Butte and Seeley Lake. Elsewhere across western
Montana, overnight lows will be in the 10 below to 20 below range.
Sub-zero lows will creep into large portions of north-central
Idaho as well, with even the so-called warmer locations falling
into the single digits. Even with relatively calm winds expected
during the coldest periods, wind chills will still be a hazard.
With a light breeze of 5 miles per hour, wind chills will be 25 to
35 below zero for most locations. Wind chills could fall to 45
below zero near the Continental Divide. Adding to the danger posed
from the overnight lows, daytime highs across the Northern
Rockies on Sunday and Monday are likely to remain in the single
digits above zero. Along the Divide, daytime highs below zero are
possible on Sunday and Monday.

Just to highlight the current confidence in the cold forecast,
even the warmest end of the NBM has lows below zero for most of
the region through Tuesday morning. Areas along the Divide still
have lows near 20 below in the warmer solution. With both ECMWF
and GFS ensemble means showing a 1045 millibar surface high
pressure centered over Montana, the warmer end of the NBM seems
unlikely to occur. With the aforementioned surface high in place
through mid next week, widespread precipitation is not expected
for most of this period. Model guidance does suggest the
possibility of a shortwave disturbance moving into the region from
the northwest by Tuesday, although only around 50 percent of the
ECMWF and GFS ensemble members currently have precipitation
associated with it. Those members that do have precipitation keep
it on the light side. /Shive

.AVIATION...Scattered areas of light snow will become widespread
with greater intensities later this evening, lasting throughout
Friday for much of Northern Rockies. Broad valleys will experience
periods of downsloping which will diminish precipitation at
times. Regardless, ceiling and visibility reductions will be
problematic for terminal sites with mountain obscurations common.
An arctic air mass arrives late Friday afternoon into Friday
evening across western Montana with an abrupt increase in easterly
winds and flash freeze potential. Forecast models continue to
show a band of heavy snow ahead of and along the front
particularly across west-central Montana.
