The leading edge of arctic air will continue to move south and west
across the Northern Rockies through Wednesday morning. The most
significant impacts as the arctic air passes are:
1) Flash freeze of area roadways, creating difficult or impossible
travel at times. The risk of flash freezing is much greater if
roadways are already wet or snow covered prior to the arrival of
arctic air.
2) Sudden drop in visibility in heavy snow. Most locations in
western Montana and Lemhi County will experience the arctic airmass
by late this evening, while the US-95 corridor in north central
Idaho will be impacted throughout Wednesday morning.
4) Wind gusts to 50 mph, creating dangerous cross winds and felling
trees.
5) Wind chill cooling to as low as -30 degrees for population
centers in western Montana and Lemhi County, as low as -10 degrees
for population centers in north central Idaho. Terrain along the
Continental Divide wind chill may reach as cold as -50 degrees.
Consider carefully if it is worth traveling far from populated areas
through tonight, particularly over the Continental Divide, where
most aforementioned impact conditions will be present for numerous
hours.
Wind chill will quickly supplant all over impacts late tonight
across western Montana...and north central Idaho around sunrise
for north central Idaho.
The arctic air-mass will settle in over the Northern Rockies, with
the coldest temperatures this week being Thursday and Friday
mornings. Temperatures will be below zero for most, if not all
locations in western Montana, with locations along the Continental
Divide lowering to -20F or colder both days. High temperatures
will struggle to get into the teens for Thursday, then slowly
moderating into the weekend. Isolated snow showers are expected
through the rest of the week, though further snow accumulations
outside of the higher terrain are not expected.
The active pattern will return to end the weekend, and especially

.AVIATION...
There will be strong wind shear (30-50 knots within 1500 feet AGL)
within Northern Rockies air space through 22/1500Z. An arctic
airmass between KGPI and KMSO this afternoon will move south and
west over time, shifting low-level winds from west/northwest to
east/northeast through 22/1500Z (reaching as far west as KGIC, as
far south as KSMN). Ahead of the arctic airmass, occasionally
intense snow showers will exist, with freezing level above terrain.
Once the arctic airmass passes, freezing levels will immediately
decrease to below ground level. Also, gusts 30-50 knots will occur
along and behind the arctic airmass, with visibility reducing to
less than 1/4 miles, ceilings reducing to several hundred feet, and
widespread terrain obscurations. Wind gusts and terrain obscurations
will lessen a bit (particularly within valleys) after 22/1500Z, with
east/northeast low-level winds gusting 20-40 knots through
Wednesday.
