Key Messages:

1. Widespread dense fog will continue through at least mid morning
before conditions improve.

2. A line of moderate rain showers will move onto the Cumberland
Plateau early Thursday morning, then spread east into the east TN
Valley. Most areas are by by mid afternoon. Gusty winds are
expected as the showers move through as they will pull down
stronger winds aloft. Gusts from 30 to 40 mph are expected.

3. Late tonight into Thursday, sustained southwest winds of 25 to 35
mph are expected across the highest peaks of the east TN mountains
with wind gusts from 40 to 55 mph, isolated gusts up to 65 mph.
See wind section below for more details.

Discussion:

Through this morning:

A dense fog advisory will remain in place through 10 AM EST.
Widespread dense fog is occurring and conditions won't improve
until at least mid morning. There may be some areas that hang onto
fog until early afternoon due to a steep low level inversion that
is in place. Will monitor trends and extend the advisory if need
be. Please use caution while traveling this morning.

Today through Thursday overview:

A broad area of low pressure will move from the central Great Plains
today and into the Great Lakes region by Thursday. A stationary
boundary that is currently located across southern middle TN will
transition into a warm front today and will begin to lift northeast
into our area this afternoon. Will keep the area dry today and don't
introduce slight chance POPs until early evening. This is in
response to upper-level divergence increasing across the area
ahead of the cold front. The bulk of the rain will occur just
ahead of and along the cold front, which doesn't push into our
area until early Thursday morning. Expect the line of moderate
rain showers to arrive onto the Cumberland Plateau between 3 AM
and 6 AM EST, then push east into the east TN Valley through mid
to late morning. Most areas are dry by mid afternoon. QPF will be
fairly low and most areas will average around 0.25 inches of
rainfall, isolated areas up to 0.5 inches are expected though.

Wind:

The biggest impact with this system will be the strong and gusty
winds across the high terrain of the east TN Mountains. I don't
expect this to be a mountain wave event as the 850mb flow is mostly
parallel to the terrain. The strong and gusty winds will be due to
the 45 to 55 knot 850 mb jet passing overhead. Though there will
be a few isolated locations, such as Cove Mountain, that will hit
High Wind Warning criteria, expect most areas to stay within
Advisory level winds. HREF, WRF-ARW, HRRR, all in pretty good
agreement with this wind event. The highest peaks, above 4000
feet, can expect sustained southwest winds of 25 to 35 mph with
gusts from 45 to 55 mph, with isolated gusts to 65 mph. See wind
advisory for additional details.

For valley locations, expect gusty winds to occur as the line of
showers moves across the area. This is due to the stronger winds
aloft being pulled down to the surface by the showers. Sustained
winds between 15 to 25 mph are expected with gusts from 30 to 40
mph as the rain moves through.

Key Messages:

1. Relief from rain late week and into the first half of the
weekend. Additional rounds of showers returning late weekend and
into next week.

2. Temperatures becoming more seasonable for the extended period.

Discussion:

The second weather system to impact East Tennessee this week will
continue to lift north and east late Thursday as precipitation
chances come to an end and H85 flow weakens and veers to the WNW.
Dry conditions are anticipated to persist Friday and through the
majority of Saturday as more seasonable temperatures filter into the
region.

By Saturday night, low pressure at 500mb transitions eastward over
the central CONUS. As a response to the increasing upper level flow,
southerly 850mb winds will amplify and increase moisture return into
the area as well. GEFS ensemble mean suggest PWAT values returning
to near 1", with the greatest moisture in the southern valley and
southwest NC. As weak low pressure and associated surface boundaries
lift northward overnight Saturday and into Sunday, precipitation
chances will increase in response.

Models seem to be converging better on the concept of Sunday being
the most likely time for additional rainfall with this system, as
well as the axis of strongest precip setting up southeast of the
forecast area. Still some discrepancies among ensemble means
regarding local accumulation but not currently anticipating
significant impacts at this time. GEFS shows only low end(20-30%)
chance of 24 hour rainfall totals greater than 1" for southwest NC
and the GSMNP area where as the ECMWF ensemble mean does not show
any chance. Additionally, depending on where exactly the 850mb jet
sets up, some gusty winds will be possible in the higher elevations
of East Tennessee mountains Sunday. There are still differences
among models in this aspect so details remain fuzzy. Just worth
noting it cannot be totally ruled out at this time.

Only a short-lived break from unsettled weather is expected near the
start of the work week before an additional system brings increasing
chances for rain once again. Details for this are uncertain at this
time.
