Key Messages:

1. A significant mountain wave wind event will develop on Tuesday
night and continue through Wednesday; strong winds will mix down
into the Valley on Wednesday.

2. Rain spreads into the area after midnight tonight, peaking on
Wednesday morning with a period of locally heavy rainfall possible.

Discussion:

The southern stream cyclonic circulation seen in WV imagery over
NM/West TX will induce surface cyclogenesis over southern TX today.
This low will track into southern AR/northern LA tonight, then to
West TN by Wednesday morning. The models have continued to show this
as a very dynamic system with a strong wind field and QG forcing as
it impacts the TN Valley and southern Appalachians.

Today will be mostly sunny, with high cloud increasing late in the
day. Forecast soundings show a very dry layer below 700 mb that will
initially delay precip reaching the ground. This dry layer should be
overcome by the strengthening southerly flow and moisture advection,
with likely PoPs arriving in southern sections around 06z.
Categorical PoPs with a convective line crossing the area from west
to east will be forecast between 09Z and 15Z. A slight chance of
thunderstorms will be added to southern sections during this period
as there may be some weak elevated CAPE. Precip chances should drop
off quickly through Wednesday late morning and afternoon behind the
convective line, and a the dry slot builds in. Total QPF amounts are
expected to range from around 1 inch in southern sections to around
a half inch north.

A potent LLJ will develop across the region tonight around 06Z. 850
mb winds in the NAM peak around 80 kts at 11Z Wed, and even the GFS
is showing 70 kts. The NAM soundings show a favorable setup for wave
ducting between 850-800 mb. With mountain wave enhancement, we could
potentially see wind gusts approaching 100 mph in the favored areas
for mountain wave winds, such as Cove Mountain and Camp Creek. The
High Wind Watch will be upgraded to a Warning. In the Valley, there
will initially be a strong inversion from the surface up to 850 mb,
so the winds aloft will likely not be reaching the Valley floor.
This is expected to change through Wednesday as a surface warm front
lifts through the area and a surface-to-850 mb mixed layer develops
in the warm sector. Forecast soundings show winds at the top of this
mixed layer of 40-50 kts, and with a SW directions channeling that
flow through the Valley, Advisory criteria winds should easily be
met. Therefore, a Wind Advisory will be issued for the rest of the
area not currently in an Advisory or Warning. The start time of the
new Advisory will be split between the southern/central Valley and
the northern Valley based on the northward spread of the warm front.
The end time of all wind W/W/A products will also be extended to 00Z
Thu as the pressure gradient remains quite strong into the
evening.

1. Wednesday night winds remain strong but decrease by Thursday
morning, winds as high as 30-45 mph during the evening across higher
eastern Tennessee Mountains and southwest Virginia.

2. Lingering wrap around moisture brings light snow showers and
flurries over much of the area Wednesday night and Thursday.
Accumulating snowfall expected across mostly the East Tennessee
mountains, higher elevations of southwest Virginia, and
the Cumberland Plateau.

3. Another fast moving system Sunday into Monday but with warmer
temperatures.

Discussion:

Wednesday evening the first cold front will be well east of the
Appalchians but a secondary front will approach and a broad upper
trough will lie across the region with another short-wave diving
into the Tennessee Valley and southern Appalachians behind
Wednesday's front. The winds will be west to southwest Wednesday
night and Thursday. With strong cold air advection during this time
and the isentropic lift scattered showers of rain and snow will form
in the cold air aloft. Only light accumulations expected Wednesday
night through Thursday. Temperatures will be too warm lower
elevations Wednesday night into Thursday night for any significant
snowfall, with mostly snow flurries there, but an inch or two is
possible higher elevations of the eastern Tennessee mountains. The
precipitation will end Thursday night. Friday highs will only be
slightly warmer than Thursday. Higher pressure along the Gulf Coast
will give the region a dry day and clearing skies. Saturday the
surface high shifts to the southeast coast shifting winds to the
southwest and warming temperatures to the upper 40s to mid 50s
closer to normal for late January. The fair weather will be short-
lived as low pressure moves into the southern plains Saturday night
and moisture increases overnight into Sunday with more rain
spreading west to east across the Tennessee Valley. Temperatures
will be cold enough initially Sunday morning for some snow in
northeast Tennessee before changing to rain. This system will slowly
move east later Sunday into Sunday night and begin to shift east of
the forecast area late Monday. Yet another system moves from west to
east into the Tennessee Valley early Tuesday.

Clear and calm conditions will prevail through the night, although
satellite shows a few clouds at the VFR/MVFR margins at TRI.
Expect that these clouds will remain scattered at most through the
morning. In the afternoon/evening, high to midlevel clouds will
spread into the area, and at CHA, LLWS is expected to develop late
in this TAF period as the low level jet strengthens. LLWS will
likely develop at TYS and TRI as well, but after 06Z Wed.

A strong low pressure system will impact the area Tuesday night
and Wednesday. A line of showers with moderate to heavy rainfall
is expected Wednesday morning. Strong and gusty winds will likely
accompany this line of showers. Winds gust up to 50 mph area
possible.

Additionally, Gusty winds are expected to develop late Tuesday
into Wednesday. Wind gusts between 30 to 40 mph will be possible
area wide, especially the Plateau counties. Much stronger gusts
between 70 to possibly as high as 90 mph expected across the East
Tennesse mountains and foothills.

Light snow accumulations possible in higher elevations of
southwest Virginia, East Tennessee mountains and Plateau
Wednesday night through Thursday evening.
