Upper air pattern consists of 500 mb troughs on both coasts and an
elongated trough across the northern plains which bridges the gap
between them. The pattern is blocky and a trough will remain over
the northern plains this period with building heights over the upper
Great Lakes by 00z Sun. 850-500 mb q-vector convergence and deep
moisture remains through 00z tonight over the area. Will continue to
be showery today and will have chance pops everywhere. Overall, did
not make too many changes to the going forecast.

.LONG TERM...(Sunday through Friday)

Widespread rain chances continue into Sunday morning when river
levels are most likely to be rising again. More isolated precip
chances are possible Sunday through Tuesday, but dry conditions are
favored at this time as a Hudson Bay high pattern should keep dry
easterly flow across the UP. Much above normal temperatures develop
by mid-week with widespread 60s and 70s for Wed-Fri then precip
chances and somewhat cooler temps could return next weekend.
Overall, this favors above normal temperatures and below-normal
precipitation for Sunday afternoon through Friday (finally!).

Starting at 00z Sunday, an impressive +3 sigma blocking ridge across
northern Canada keeps the jet stream and associated storminess
farther south across the CONUS. More locally, a shortwave embedded
withing southwesterly upper level flow lifts a warm front across
across Upper Michigan from southwest to northeast tonight. The
latest 00z 3-km NAM guidance shows around 200-300 J/kg of MUCAPE
rooted around 775mb with this FroPa suggesting a few rumbles from
elevated thunderstorms will be possible before sunrise. Our area
stays within the warm sector on Sunday, but stubborn low level
clouds should prevent destabilization except across south-central
Upper Michigan. By ~21z Sunday the most aggressive model guidance
(NAM 3km) advertises MLCAPE values around 1500 J/kg and effective
shear values around 55 knots across south-central portions of our
CWA where a lake breeze off Green Bay seems likely. The 00z HRW-
NSSL and NAM-nest models try to initiate a thunderstorm in this
area by 00z Monday implying a non-zero chance for a severe
thunderstorm Sunday evening. The frontal boundary shifts south
Sunday night and Monday implying mostly dry conditions then, but
another shortwave may pivot into our area Monday night and Tuesday
that could bring renewed precip chances. However, at this time
continued dry conditions are favored due to easterly low level
flow south of a 1020mb+ Hudson Bay surface ridge.

Upper level ridging amplifies across the Great Lakes region Tuesday
night through at least Friday leading to warming temperatures and
dry weather. Widespread highs in the 70s are expected away from lake
influences by Thursday and Friday. At the same time, an upper level
low spins onto the Plains and could approach the Great Lakes region
next weekend. Ensemble low tracks advertise a surface low across the
Dakotas Thursday night that weakens while tracking east toward the
Great Lakes on Saturday suggesting lighter precip for our area.
However, at least one ensemble member from each major model center
has a 24-hour precip amount exceeding 1 inch so it's worth
monitoring.

Confidence is low with this forecast with the scattered showers
moving through. Majority of the time will be VFR at the sites, but
there will be some pockets of MVFR conditions that will last a
couple hours at a time in the showers.

Lake Superior is situated between high pressure over the the Hudson
Bay and low pressure over the Rockies and Plains. This pressure
pattern results in northeast winds gusting up to 30 knots over the
west half of the lake and easterly gusts up to 25 knots over the
east half. Dew point temperatures warmer than water temperatures is
resulting in patchy dense fog, primarily across western Lake
Superior where there is a longer fetch of moist low level winds.
This wind pattern remains consistent until Sunday night when both
pressure systems weaken and winds diminish below 20 knots lake-wide.
Ridging builds across the lake Monday through Thursday allowing for
light winds below 20 knots to continue with increasingly dry air
limiting fog potential for Monday onwards. Increasing southeast
winds are expected by Thursday night when ridging begins shifting
east of the lake.
