KEY MESSAGES:

- Light snow today with under an inch of snow expected with a chance
  for some drizzle this afternoon/evening.

- Widespread snowfall Thursday into Friday with the heaviest amounts
  expected across southern Minnesota.

- Another round of accumulating snow this weekend as a clipper moves
  through.

Today... We have seen light snow at times over parts of western
Minnesota this morning as weak forcing associated with a nearby
shortwave passes through the Upper Midwest. With a lack of strong
forcing and some dry air present in the lower levels of the
atmosphere little snow has been reaching the ground so far this
morning. Forecast soundings vary between CAMs, but all show some
moistening of the profile as we move into later parts of the morning.
Where these soundings differ is how deep this saturation is. Some
keep the DGZ partially or mostly dry, which would make dendrites
unlikely. A dry DGZ means fine snow grains or drizzle. Other have a
deeper moisture profile taking it just past the DGZ which favors
accumulating snow. Overall snow is favored this morning with drizzle
chances increasing by the afternoon. Bottom line due to weak forcing
and some dry air expect light snow accumulations of up to an inch
today. We should see a break tonight before our next system moves in
on Thursday.

Thursday and Friday... Much better forcing on Thursday with a well
defined shortwave and associated surface low. However, this surface
low remains far away down in Missouri at its closest. With the low
so far away what forcing will be driving our snow? This is from an
inverted trough from the surface low up into the Upper Midwest. So
with this setup what has changed from the last discussion? Overall
guidance has trended down with this system for snow and overall
liquid QPF totals. For example the GEFS still has most members below
the operational GFS and among the main global ensemble systems the
GEFS mean remains the highest. So the overall picture favors a
reduced snow forecast and additional drops in the forecast could
still occur. However, the latest run of the HREF still suggests that
there could be some areas of higher snow. We will have to see what
comes from future runs later in the day today to get a better idea of
the trends. These changes in model guidance has kept our confidence
low for this forecast, so we are keeping the Winter Storm Watch in
effect. As we get into the day Wednesday we should get more CAM data
and should start to observe how this system is evolving to our south
to get a better idea of where the forecast will lead. The area at
the greatest risk for heavier snow remains the same from west central
to south central Minnesota with lighter snow to the north. The
timing also remains the same with snow starting on Thursday morning
and the heaviest snow is expected Thursday PM. As this system passes
we will trend cooler, but still near normal.

Saturday through Wednesday... We should see a break between the late week
system and this next clipper system with a period of higher pressure
over the region late Friday into Saturday morning. Still seeing good
agreement in model guidance for the clipper this weekend. As the
track looks likely to pass right through Minnesota based on global
deterministic model runs. Like most clippers it won't be one of our
higher snow events of the winter, but still can provide periods of
higher snow rates which could impact travel. It will be Saturday
afternoon when we could start seeing the first flakes fall again.
Once this snow starts chances will continue through Sunday night,
possibly Monday morning. High pressure moves back in behind this
clipper giving us a few days of quieter weather with the next
precipitation chance later in the week, but still too much spread to
discuss at this time. Temperatures will be on the cooler side of
normal to start the week as the clipper moves through, but then
depending on how much new snow we get we could start trending warmer
up to around normal by the end of the week.

Light snow and drizzle over the central portion of MN should slowly
move east to near the MN/WI border this afternoon before stalling.
MVFR with a couple hour period of IFR are expected within the precip
this afternoon. Aside from our WI terminals where conditions will
remain VFR thru the period, cigs will generally lower into this
evening. MVFR is likely across our central MN terminals thru tonight
while IFR with periods of LIFR are more likely for RWF and AXN. Mist
could also reduce visibilities to IFR for MN terminals. Snow from our
next system will overspread the region starting with southwestern
and western MN Thursday morning and pushing northeast. LIFR will
become more likely as heavier snowfall rates arrive. Southeasterly
winds will become more easterly this evening remaining near 10 knots.

KMSP...MVFR expected during light snow and drizzle this afternoon,
with a period of IFR possible from 20-22Z during heaviest precip
rates. Have added TEMPO for IFR period. Snow looks to hold off until
after 18Z Thursday with conditions dropping to IFR to even LIFR
afterwards.
