Issued at 642 PM CDT Sat Apr 8 2023 Updated to include 00z aviation discussion below. && .DISCUSSION...(This evening through Saturday) Issued at 230 PM CDT Sat Apr 8 2023 KEY MESSAGES: - Warming trend continues into next week, with 70s and perhaps even 80s possible midweek. - Scattered showers possible on Sunday, with a few other small rain chances later in the week. DISCUSSION... A breezy but otherwise pleasant day across the area with temperatures in the 50s and 60s except for the northwestern portions of the CWA where snow cover keeps things a bit cooler in the 40s. There is a significant dew point depression in southern Minnesota which has lead to relative humidity values below 30 percent, however fire weather concerns have yet to truly establish due to a lack of fuel readiness, however this likely changes over the next few days. Skies will gradually fill in overnight, with partly to mostly cloudy skies by Sunday morning. A shortwave is expected to swing through the area beginning Sunday morning with scattered showers beginning in western Minnesota by the late morning, spreading eastwards during the afternoon before exiting during the evening. Radar echoes will be sporadic and not everyone will end up seeing rain, with a few hundredths up to around a tenth of an inch of liquid being all that is expected for now. Temperatures will likely be similar to today, with mid 60s in southern Minnesota decreasing to low to mid 40s in portions of west-central Minnesota. We continue the warming trend as broad high pressure and subsidence take over, with upper level ridging ensuring a nice warming pattern due to persistent southwesterly flow in the lower levels, with temperatures in the mid 60s by Monday, 70s by Tuesday, and possible 80s in southern Minnesota and the metro by Wednesday. 850mb temperatures within forecast soundings continue to this, with winds likely ending up on the breezy side due to efficient mixing. Record temperature for MSP on Wednesday is 83 with a forecast of 81, so this would be the one to watch as far as record breaking goes. Any further records will quickly become out of reach as the records increase into the 90s by the end of next week, as temperatures moderate back down towards more normal mid 50s to mid 60s by Saturday. The longer range temperature forecast continues to show near normal conditions, with the EPS/GEFS means in the 50s and 60s with a decent amount of spread. As far as further rainfall goes, the deterministic GFS continues to come in with a multiple day rainfall beginning late in the week, with other global models taking a more conservative approach. Given the disparity between the global models, broad PoPs in the 40s were kept but I would expect to see the number increase as the time window decreases as we head throughout next week. The main thing to watch for if we do end up seeing a multiple day rainfall event is the flooding potential, with area rivers primed due to what is likely to be the complete melting of our snowpack with the warmer temperatures coming up. && .AVIATION...(For the 00Z TAFS through 00Z Sunday evening) Issued at 642 PM CDT Sat Apr 8 2023 VFR throughout this TAF period. However, clouds will be on the increase tonight through Sunday as a weak mid-level shortwave approaches. This will produce strong nocturnal low-level jetting overnight through sunrise, resulting in LLWS conditions for nearly all TAFs. The same shortwave will also be responsible for a roughly 4-hr window in central-southern-eastern MN into western WI for some intermittent rain showers. Not overall looking for anything appreciably impactful but visibilities may be reduced to MVFR-levels Sunday afternoon during any heavier showers. KMSP...Ceilings to develop after sunrise Sunday, mainly in the upper levels but potentially close to 5 kft Sunday afternoon-evening as a swath of rain showers approaches from the west and moves across the MSP area.
