Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Twin Cities/Chanhassen MN 219 PM CDT Fri Apr 21 2023 .DISCUSSION...(This evening through Friday) Issued at 213 PM CDT Fri Apr 21 2023 KEY MESSAGES: - Widespread snow showers expected into this evening with brief periods of heavier snow possible. - Quiet weather returns this weekend and most of next week with temperatures remaining below normal. Widespread showers will continue through this afternoon as wrap around moisture advects cyclonically around the surface low in northeast MN. Precip types within these showers range from rain to graupel/sleet (observed at our office) to snow across central MN where slightly cooler air resides. Some of these showers are also quite intense, owing to a deeply mixed and moist boundary layer resulting in non-zero CAPE. Thus, while any snow accumulation should be minimal and/or melt on contact, visibilities could be greatly reduced (to under 2 miles) creating hazardous travel conditions. The showers will slowly become less widespread/taper off heading through tonight into Saturday as the low fills and CAA continues. Lows tonight will range from the mid 20s to lower 30s, causing any remaining precip to be snow. The coldest day of the period will be Saturday with highs struggling to eclipse 40. In fact, mostly cloudy skies and breezy northwesterly winds should make the whole day pretty forgettable. Temperatures will tank even farther Saturday night with widespread 20s and even a few upper teens (in western MN) forecast. While still very cool, highs will improve into the upper 30s to mid 40s for Sunday. Cool, mundane weather will be the theme of next week, though temperatures should gradually rise as the week progresses. Near to slightly below normal highs (widespread 50s and a few low 60s) are suggested by Wednesday/Thursday. Looking beyond the period, any strong warmups don't appear likely into the first week of May as GEFS and EPS temperatures hold MSP to near or slightly below normal. Precipitation-wise, incoming split-flow also looks to keep precipitation chances rather bleak (aside from a potential mesoscale accident). Not until the latter half of next week do PoPs begin to increase area-wide when the arrival of a stronger wave within the northern jetstream is hinted in long-range deterministic and ensemble guidance. Until then, dry conditions should greatly help the high rivers within our CWA decline. && .AVIATION...(For the 18Z TAFS through 18Z Saturday afternoon) Issued at 1250 PM CDT Fri Apr 21 2023 Generally MVFR/VFR conditions with periods of snow showers reducing visibility down to at mile or less at times. Winds will become more northwesterly this evening and overnight. The snow showers will diminish toward midnight, but low clouds will linger into Saturday before cloud bases lift to VFR levels. KMSP... Generally VFR/MVFR conditions with scattered snow showers this afternoon and evening. The heaviest snow will be east of KMSP, so have raised the visibility in the tempo group up to 1 mile.
