Area Forecast Discussion...UPDATED National Weather Service Twin Cities/Chanhassen MN 1157 AM CDT Fri Aug 18 2023 .DISCUSSION...(Today through Thursday) Issued at 242 AM CDT Fri Aug 18 2023 KEY MESSAGES: - Degraded air quality to continue today but will continue to improve into the weekend. - Significant heat wave still expected over the weekend through the first half of next week, with the hottest days Saturday, Tuesday and Wednesday. Not many changes to the overall 7-day forecast, which will contain a significant heat wave along with continued dry conditions throughout. There is a bit greater clarity on which days will have the greatest heat, owing to a few surface frontal boundaries and the influence of upper level ridging over the Upper Midwest. With regards to the air quality, MN/WI air quality sensors still indicate some particulates in the near-surface regions, but not as dire as previously forecast. Subsidence across the region will allow for some smoke to mix into the near-surface environment, leading to hazy skies for at least the first half of the day. However, as winds increase later today and the upper level pattern shifts the northwest flow eastward, this will push the hazy conditions eastward later on today into tonight, allowing air quality to gradually improve. Surface high pressure atop the region this morning has led to a calming of winds overnight which will be followed by winds picking up from the south shortly after daybreak. This southerly surge will advect noticeably warmer air into the region starting today. The Upper Mississippi River valley region will just miss out on the significantly hotter air as the H5 ridge will not quite reach this far north or east, sitting more over the Mid-Mississippi River Valley region through the lee of the Rockies. However, this setup will allow for dry frontal passages atop the ridge across the northern tier CONUS. Thus, for today, highs will top out in the low- mid 80s. However, 90- to 100 degree temperatures will not be far away in the western Dakotas through the central Plains. The aforementioned ridging combined with warm sectoring ahead of a dry cold front will push highs on Saturday into the low-mid 90s, with possibly some upper 90s in western MN. This first burst of heat will be short-lived as the dry cold front is expected to slide east across the Upper Midwest Saturday night into Sunday morning, bringing a modified Canadian cooler airmass into the region for a couple days. The upper level ridge will also retreat back to the west, thus dragging away the heat bubble away from our region. Highs on Sunday will fall back to the upper 70s to mid 80s. But, again, this relief will only be short-lived as the ridge returns eastward for Monday and making for several hot days across the Upper Midwest for the first half of next week. Monday will be the trickiest of the days because that is when a warm front nudges back north into southern MN, so it depends on where exactly this front settles that will delineate between 80s and 90s for highs. At this point, generally-speaking, I-94 will be the line that separates 80s to the north and 90s to the south. Come Tuesday, just about the entire WFO MPX area will have temperatures reach the 90-degree mark, including the potential for 100 degrees in far western MN. Wednesday now looks to be the hottest day of all, with highs ranging from the mid 90s to lower 100s, and these 100-degree readings could even include the Twin Cities metro and points south and westward along the Minnesota River. Another cold front looks to push through the region Wednesday night into Thursday, bringing this heat wave to an end, pushing high temperatures back into the 80s for the end of the week. As for precipitation, dry conditions will persist through at least the middle of next week and likely into the end of next week. This is not necessarily due to dry air as dewpoints will rise to the mid 60s to near 70, even with the frontal passages. Instead, this is owing to the depth of the ridging aloft suppressing precipitation-generating mechanisms. Strong capping, as noted in the previous discussion, will suppress any convective potential across the Upper Midwest, denying the chances for any rain anytime soon. Thus, have maintained a dry forecast across the WFO MPX coverage area through the middle of next week. With the breaking down of the ridge and additional frontal passages at the end of next week, there might be some potential then but no widespread rainfall is expected anytime soon. && .AVIATION...(For the 18Z TAFS through 18Z Saturday afternoon) Issued at 1157 AM CDT Fri Aug 18 2023 VFR through the period.
