(12Z TAFS) Issued at 611 AM CST Sat Jan 28 2023 A VFR forecast will mostly remain prevalent through the period though mid to low level cloud decks will thicken late tonight. A few MVFR ceilings could develop near the coast by 09-12Z Sunday morning. Light winds early this morning will become easterly 5-10 knots after 14-15Z, then turning southeasterly 7-13 knots with a few higher gusts between 15-20 knots possible by this afternoon. A lighter southeast wind flow is anticipated this evening through late tonight. /21 && .PREV DISCUSSION... /issued 519 AM CST Sat Jan 28 2023/ ..New NEAR TERM, SHORT TERM, LONG TERM, MARINE... NEAR TERM... (Now through Sunday) Issued at 450 AM CST Sat Jan 28 2023 Surface high pressure slowly continues to advance eastward across the north central Gulf Coast region and adjacent southeastern states early this morning. Skies remain mostly clear across our forecast area, with only a few high clouds streaming overhead. Definitely a cold start to the weekend with temperatures ranging in the mid 20s to lower 30s across most interior areas along and north of the I-10 corridor early this morning, while readings closer to the coast and beaches are a little warmer in the mid 30s to mid 40s. The flow pattern aloft gradually transitions from zonal to more southwesterly today into tonight in advance of the next shortwave trough that will quickly progress from the Four Corners/Rocky Mountains early this morning and eastward across the Plains tonight. The surface ridge of high pressure will advance eastward along the Eastern Seaboard and into the western Atlantic through tonight as the next surge of arctic air pushes southward across the northern and central Plains. A light southeasterly surface flow pattern will develop across our forecast area today and tonight between these features. A dry surface airmass will remain in place across the forecast area today with dewpoints remaining low in the 20s and 30s along the remnant western periphery of the surface ridge axis. High clouds will continue to spread over the area today within the southwest flow aloft. Afternoon high temperatures will trend a little warmer in the lower to mid 60s across most of our region. By tonight, low level moisture slowly recovers, particularly closer to the coast where dewpoints should gradually rise into the upper 40s to mid 50s late. A drier and cooler airmass remains entrenched over inland areas still under the influence of the surface ridge axis. Dry weather conditions will continue through tonight with lows ranging from the lower to mid 40s over inland areas and in the upper 40s to mid 50s along the immediate coast and beaches. A wet and stormy weather pattern returns for the latter half of the weekend. A series of shortwave impulses embedded within southwest flow aloft will translate from southeast TX and across southern portions of LA/MS/AL during the day Sunday. An inverted surface trough of low pressure should also extend from southeast TX into portions of LA/MS, while a warm front also extends eastward from this feature and becomes oriented across southern/coastal portions of our forecast area Sunday into Sunday evening. Large scale ascent will spread across the Gulf Coast region Sunday into Sunday evening and we expect an associated batch of widespread rain showers along with a few embedded thunderstorms to propagate across our forecast area from late Sunday morning through Sunday evening. Atmospheric moisture will be very rich for late January, with associated precipitable water values rising to between 1.6-1.8 inches per the latest model trends. A slug of heavy rainfall will likely impact much of our forecast area late Sunday morning into Sunday evening with rainfall amounts between 1-3" looking likely and possibly a few localized higher totals, especially across areas along and north of the I-10 corridor. Excessive rainfall could lead to minor flooding of urban and low lying areas and cannot rule out some localized flash flooding if heavy rains fall in a short period of time or a few rounds of heavy rain train over a specific location. Minor river flooding will be possible or exacerbated where it is currently ongoing by this next round of heavy rainfall. In addition to the potential for heavy rainfall, a marginal severe threat may materialize over southern/coastal portions of our forecast area Sunday afternoon into Sunday evening as a narrow corridor of surface dewpoints in the mid to upper 60s advects into far southern portions of southeast MS/southwest AL/western FL panhandle along and south of the warm front. MLCAPE values will probably rise to at least 500- 1000 J/KG across our coastal areas. Deep layer shear profiles will be supportive of organized convection and a look at forecast soundings from some of the available CAMs this morning show decent curvature to low level hodographs with 0-1 km SRH values up to around 200 m2/s2 along the coastal warm sector. Given the current trends in instability and shear, we would expect a potential for localized wind damage and possibly a tornado or two to spin up and will advertise this the marginal severe threat in our messaging this morning. A chance of showers and storms may linger into late Sunday night considering the active west-southwest flow pattern. Patchy fog will also probably develop late Sunday given the moist environment. /21 LONG TERM... (Monday through Friday) Issued at 450 AM CST Sat Jan 28 2023 In the wake of Sundays system, upper level ridging continues to amplify across the Gulf of Mexico helping to keep our region in generally zonal flow aloft. Several weak disturbances track to the north of the area, helping to keep some slight chance to chance PoPs in the forecast Tuesday into Wednesday. Best chances for any rain would be confined more into interior portions of southwestern Alabama and southeastern Mississippi. The next system of interest will be late in the period Thursday into Friday as a potent shortwave trough progresses across the south-central Plains states. Recent runs of global guidance suggests we may be refining timing of when this progresses into our area towards sometime Thursday into Thursday night. Considering adequate CAPE and shear will be in place ahead of this system and its associated surface low, it stands to reason there will likely be some form of heavy rain and strong to severe thunderstorm potential. Details on this can be refined in later forecasts. We never see a true FROPA during the near term into short term period, and thus we should continue to warm in the wake of Sundays system. High temperatures Monday through Thursday will generally be in the middle to upper 60's inland and lower to middle 70's closer to the coast. It appears the most likely time of FROPA at this point is late Thursday into Friday morning, and thus Friday's forecast highs are cooler in the middle to upper 50's for most locations. Low temperatures are similar with overnight lows Monday night through Wednesday night falling only into the middle to upper 50's inland and lower 60's nearer the coast. Thursday night in the wake of the front temperatures fall into the lower 40's inland and middle 40's nearer the coast. Given the warm, moist airmass in place across the coast, patchy dense sea/radiation fog may become a problem for marine/land areas during the first half of the work week at the least. MM/25 MARINE... Issued at 450 AM CST Sat Jan 28 2023 Small craft operators will need to exercise caution by this afternoon over the coastal Gulf marine zones as east-southeast winds pick up in speed. An onshore flow pattern continues Sunday into Sunday evening along with an increasing chance of showers and storms. Increasing moisture may result in fog development over some area bays and sounds and nearshore coastal waters late this weekend into early next week and will be monitoring this potential closely over the next few days. /21 && .PRELIMINARY POINT TEMPS/POPS...
