No plans on making any changes to the winter weather advisories this
evening. Given the drier air mass in place across the region and
lingering uncertainty in how much QPF we may see out of this
system, would like to get a full picture from all of the 00Z
guidance before making any major headline changes. A few models,
in particular the NAM and NAMNest, have been hitting us hard with
higher QPF, which has played a role in skewing our probabilistic
data. However, these data continue to trend lower for much of the
area. Just for example, when comparing the 08.00Z and 09.00Z data
from the NAM, QPF is now about half of what it was last night.
It remains possible that portions of our area may need to be
upgraded, but again would like to see the full suite of new data
in before diving into any upgrades. Otherwise, tonight's
forecast remains on track. Did bump overnight lows up a degree or
two in spots given our cloud cover, but otherwise no major changes
have been made. We continue to see numerous echoes appearing on
radar but these are just mid-level clouds being detected. No
precipitation has been observed this evening, which makes sense
given wedge of dry low-level air in place per DVN's 00Z sounding.

Some light radar returns mainly west of Madison are due to the 850-
700 warm air advection and core of 700mb moisture. There is an ample
amount of dry air at the surface though as seen by the 25-30 degree
dew point depressions. Therefore not expecting any of these returns
to make it to the ground. If they were to reach the surface they'd
only be sprinkles. Clouds will increase over the area as the 700mb
moisture advection continues. Cloud cover and easterly winds should
help us remain a few degrees warmer that the previous night with
lows temperatures around freezing.

Thursday through Wednesday:
Snow is likely across the area Thursday afternoon and night into
Friday, though there continues to be questions about exact amounts.
The overall scenario has not changed too much, with snow moving in
tomorrow afternoon from the southwest, and expanding northeastward
across the entire area by tomorrow evening. Peak snowfall rates will
be between mid evening tomorrow and the early morning hours Friday.
Snow then ends from west to east Friday morning, with some lingering
snow activity near the lake into mid day Friday.
That said, there are a few complicating factors that lend themselves
to continued uncertainty. First, strong Arctic high pressure will
remain nearly stationary over central Manitoba, stretching southward
into the Great Lakes. The system moving up from the southwest that
is bringing the snow to the area will be bumping up against this
high and its associated dry air. With continued easterly flow ahead
of the precipitation, there will be a dry advection component in
play as well. This suggests that there is the potential for a
delayed onset, and some QPF being "eaten" by the dry air tomorrow
afternoon before it makes it down to the surface as snow. Relatively
speaking, this will be a bigger concern the further east one goes.
Second, temperatures through this event do not favor particularly
high SLRs. At the surface, temperatures around freezing (and a
relatively warm ground) will decrease accumulation efficiency,
especially before sunset. Aloft, the dendritic growth zone is fairly
shallow, and there is quite a bit of wind within the DGZ and the
boundary layer, which tends to break up any dendrites into a more
grainy structure. SLR climatology is around 12:1 for southern
Wisconsin, but for this event think that values will be closer to 9-
10:1 across the southeast to 11-12:1 across the northwest.
Finally, the degree of lake enhancement remains in question. There
will certainly be some enhancement near the lake, if for no other
reason than moisture flux off the water. Beyond that, delta Ts are
marginal. This suggests some enhancement, but likely nothing too
crazy in terms of lake effect.
The latest forecast amounts are between 4 and 7 inches of snow away
from the lake, and 4 to 8 inches closer to the lake. The data
suggests a very high likelihood that everyone will get at least 3 or
4 inches of snow, with a lot of uncertainty about higher amounts.
Given that, have decided to go with a Winter Weather Advisory for
the entire area for now. Later tonight or even tomorrow morning, if
the potential for those higher amounts (e.g., 6-7-8 inches)
increases in some areas, then more localized upgrades to a Winter
Storm Warning will take place.
Accumulating snow will end from west to east Friday morning,
lingering until closer to mid day near the lake. Advisory end times
have been staggered to reflect this. Scattered snow showers will
likely linger through Friday afternoon for much of the area, but
very little to no additional accumulation or impacts are currently
expected from these.
Saturday is looking fairly quiet before another couple of waves move
through the area Saturday night and Sunday and again on Monday. Each
could bring some additional snow accumulations, though this looks
pretty light at this time. High pressure then builds in behind the
Monday wave, resulting in at least a short break in the active
weather.
Temperatures through the extended will be on the cool side of
average for this time of year, with highs generally in the 30s.
Lows will be in the teens and 20s, but will be highly dependent on
cloud trends and snow cover.

VFR conditions with east winds are expected tonight. Conditions
deteriorate from west to east Thursday afternoon and evening as
widespread snow spreads across southern Wisconsin. LIFR to IFR
conditions are expected, with low visibilities and ceilings as this
area of snow moves through southern Wisconsin. This snow and gusty
northeast winds hold on into Friday, potentially lingering into
Friday afternoon for terminals across east-central and southeast
Wisconsin.
The main surface low will stay south of the area, but as it tracks
across the region on Thursday and Thursday night it will allow east
to northeast winds to increase in speed and get gusty.
