Tonight through Tuesday night:
Low pressure tracking from the Plains to northwest WI tonight
through Tuesday night. The closed upper low will be weakening as
it lifts into the Upper Great Lakes. Expect a period of rain to
southern WI starting Tuesday afternoon. Total precip amounts are
on the light side, around a quarter inch, due to mid level dry air
moving into the area on a pseudo dry slot as the low passes to
our north. There is a small possibility of a few rumbles of
thunder Tuesday evening due to steep mid level lapse rates as the
upper low goes overhead.

Wednesday through Monday:
Dry conditions should take hold by Wed AM as a 989 MB low tracks
from Lake Superior to Quebec. A relatively mild airmass will
remain over srn WI but stratus clouds will linger.
For the next round of snow late Wed nt-Thu, the challenge is
phasing issues btwn nrn and srn stream shortwave troughs, which
can have widely ranging solutions with the models. We are
currently expecting a shortwave trough lifting newd from the srn
Rockies to move across srn WI on Thu, while another shortwave
trough from Canada follows it. At the sfc, the GEFS mean MSLP
takes a relatively weak wave of low pressure along the Ohio Rvr
Valley but does have some members farther north and deeper. The
ECMWF ENS mean MSLP tracks across nrn IN with some deeper members
tracking across far srn Lake MI into lower MI. GEFS mean qpf is
thus only 0.20-0.25 inches in se WI versus an axis of 0.40 inches
via ECMWF ENS mean qpf. Nevertheless confidence is high in snow
occurring with more uncertainty toward WI Dells.
Brisk nly winds and cold advection will bring single digit temps
for Fri AM, followed by a polar sfc ridge for the day. High
pressure will shift ewd while the jet becomes quasi-zonal into
early next week. Swly winds and warm advection will take hold Fri
nt-Sat with relatively mild conditions into early next week. A
couple weak shortwave troughs may affect the area. Small PoPs are
fcst Sun nt-Mon.

VFR will prevail overnight tonight into the first half of the day
tomorrow. LLWS will start to develop tomorrow morning, giving way
to rather windy conditions by mid to late morning, with
southeasterly gusts to around 30 knots at times. Rain will
overspread the area during the afternoon, along with lower
ceilings and visibility. Rain and wind continues into Tuesday
evening.

Southerly gales are likely Tuesday night and westerly gales through
Wednesday morning. This is for all but the northern two tiers of
zones, but there is a chance we will need to add those two in.
There is a good chance we will upgrade the Watch into a Warning,
but we did not upgrade this afternoon. The winds will be very
strong right off the surface and rain is likely, so the gales will
be conditional on mixing down to the surface, but up to 40 kt.
There is a chance that the nearshore area would also need to be in the
Watch/Warning. There is a small chance for thunderstorms in far
southern Lake Michigan Tuesday evening.
The next low pressure system will slide across central IL and IN
on Thursday. Expect Gusty northerly winds with potential gale
force gusts, especially for the south half of the lake.
