The latest forecast remains on track as high pressure works its
way across the area overnight. Then winds increase through the
day Monday as another system impacts the area Monday night into
Tuesday morning.

.SHORT TERM...
(Issued 335 PM CST Sun Feb 5 2023)

Tonight through Monday night:

High pressure will move in on the heels of the cold front that
moved through this past morning. Winds will generally be low
overnight with partly cloudy skies. Some patchy fog can't be ruled
out for areas west of Madison, but this may primarily be confined
to the Wisconsin River Valley.

Tomorrow winds will become southeasterly and increasingly breezy
going into the afternoon as a low lvl jet moves overhead ahead of
an approaching, occluding low pressure system. Gaps in clouds will
give way to more overcast conditions, with temperatures around the
mid 30s during the daytime.

Overnight, the low will lift north and east, bringing warm air
northward along with an occluded front. Rain will be likely along
the front, as there won't be any saturation in the DGZ and most of
the low lvl temp profile will be above freezing. Some freezing
rain may be possible toward Green Lake, Marquette, and Fond du Lac
counties for a brief period at the onset of precipitation before
WAA northward warms the sfc environment. QPF will be light with
this activity, generally around 0.05 inches.

.LONG TERM...

Tuesday through Sunday:

After the low moves north and east of Wisconsin Tuesday morning,
high pressure will move in and we should break into some sunshine
by Tuesday afternoon. Sunshine should then linger into the first
half of Wednesday before skies cloud over. Tuesday and Wednesday
will both be mild with highs in the upper 30s to near 40.

There's still some model discrepancies for Thursday, so have let
the NBM ride for Thursday. The GFS solution is much more
aggressive on snow over the area, bringing in a broader area of
snow after an initial bought of rain over south central and
southeast WI. The ECMWF features a thin strip of snow acccum. over
southwest to southeast WI looking primarily due to dynamic
cooling/fgen. Will have to monitor trends as time marches forward
but some snow out of this system looks possible albeit on the
lighter side.

VFR conditions with light and variable winds will prevail tonight
as high pressure works its way across the area. Some lower, MVFR
ceilings may try to sneak into SBM area, but given the latest
satellite trends, not confident enough that it will impact the
terminal to add. Additionally given the light winds and increased
surface moisture, some patchy fog will be possible overnight, but
the main hurdle continues to be the dry air and higher dewpoint
depressions. Nevertheless, there remains a potential, especially
for our western terminals. Otherwise the high will exit to the
east and winds will begin to increase and shift more southerly
through the day Monday ahead of an approaching cold front.
Expecting gusts to approach 25 to 30 knots by Monday evening.

Modestly breezy northwest winds exist in the wake of a cold front
that passed over the lake this morning. Winds should become more
northerly with time tonight and ease in strength as high pressure
moves over southern Lake Michigan.Winds will then become
southeasterly and increasingly breezy through the day on Monday in
the wake of the high pressure as low pressure approaches the
western corn belt. Strong southeasterly winds will be likely
Monday night, and will change to southwesterly with time. Gales
will be possible Monday night into mid Tuesday morning and a Gale
Watch has been issued for all of Lake Michigan, and the Sheboygan
to Port Washington nearshore zone locally. Winds will then ease
Tuesday evening as high pressure moves in as the low quickly moves
northeast of the Great Lakes.
