Generally light snow showers should continue into this afternoon,
as the main 500 mb shortwave trough moves through the area. This
activity should wind down by early this evening, with any
additional accumulations of a few tenths of an inch. Low clouds
will linger as well during this period, with temperatures in the
upper 20s to lower 30s.

There should be a period of at least partial clearing for a time
this evening into the overnight hours. Light winds with the
partial clearing, with lingering low level moisture, may allow for
light fog to develop.

Warm air advection then kicks in later tonight into Friday, with
gusty south winds becoming southwest within a tight pressure
gradient. Low clouds should move back into the area Friday
morning, lingering into the evening. A strong cold front will
move east across the area during the afternoon, with fairly strong
low level frontogenesis response. Forecast soundings are showing
saturation in the low levels during this period, within the
dendrite growth zone. Thus, another round of snow showers are
anticipated Friday morning into the afternoon.

There is some potential for snow squalls with the front during
the afternoon, though it appears that the main ingredient in
question will be low level instability. The NAM and its forecast
soundings are most aggressive with this, and shows a fairly strong
snow squall parameter value. The other models are struggling to
show any instability and has lower to zero values. Will continue
to evaluate this potential and associated messaging.

.SHORT TERM...
(Issued 410 AM CST Thu Jan 26 2023)

Today through Friday:

Widespread light snow will continue through at least the morning
hours, perhaps a bit longer closer to Lake Michigan. Snowfall
accumulations will remain light, with amounts generally under an
inch. There is an area of clearing back across western Iowa and
western Minnesota that will try to sneak in across the area
tonight. If we do see clearing, expect temperatures to drop
quickly as winds will be light. There may be a small window for a
transient area of fog to develop within this clearing tonight.
Did run with non-diurnal hourly temperatures tonight. With any
potential clearing arriving overnight, this will allow
temperatures to steadily fall. However, as warm air advection
increases across the region early Friday morning, temperatures
should steadily warm as we head towards daybreak Friday.

The above mentioned warm air advection continues to lift into the
region ahead of low pressure moving east across Ontario. This
will favor an area of widespread light snow moving west to east
across southern Wisconsin Friday morning into Friday afternoon.
Across south-central Wisconsin, this light snow does look to
arrive during the morning commute. Accompany this widespread snow
will also be gusty south to southwest winds, with gusts of 30 to
35 mph appearing likely at this time. The combination of falling
snow and stronger winds will likely lead to period of reduced
visibilities. Thus, light snow and reduced visibilities may once
again lead to another day with some travel impacts. While
temperatures will warm into the lower 30s, the wind will make it
quite blustery outside! The widespread snow clears from west to
east during the afternoon, but behind the cold front we may see
some afternoon snow showers develop. These post-frontal snow
showers will also be capable of efficiently reducing visibilities
Friday afternoon. May need to keep an eye on these post-frontal
showers, as there is some better low-level instability that
develops as colder air moves in and low-level lapse rates steepen.
Wind gusts will begin to lessen in speed as they become westerly
behind the front, but the blustery conditions will remain in place
through Friday evening.

.LONG TERM...

Friday night through Wednesday:

Overall, no major changes to the forecast as the pattern remains
active and cold.

Temperatures drop into the teens area wide Friday night, something
we have not observed at Milwaukee since December 27th. Wind chills
will be in the single digits above zero.

The next upper level wave in the wave train arrives Saturday. This
narrow/elongated area of lift and resultant light snow will be
tricky as small north/south shifts will result in big changes to
snow chances. The latest versions of the GEFS, ENS and GEPS
probability of greater than one and three inches of snow continue
to hone in on northern IL, with southern WI on the northern
fringe. The signal from these ensemble systems has not really
wavered much on the location, so there is increasing confidence
in the potential for accumulating light snow. Ensemble average QPF
and at or slight above average snow/liquid ratios support the
potential for a general 1-3" snowfall for areas along/south of the
I-94 corridor. To the north, confidence quickly decreases as
systems like these tend to have a pretty tight precip cutoff on
the northern periphery. Bottom line, expect to contend with
another round of light snow Saturday and Saturday night.

Light snow may persist into Sunday, with continued cold advection
sending overnight lows into the single digits and highs in the
teens. This cold airmass sticks around for the first half of next
week, with wind chill values in the teens below zero Sunday night
and Monday night. The weather will finally behave as the calendar
suggests as we round out January.

Generally light snow showers should continue into this afternoon,
with visibility generally varying between 1 and 5 miles. This
activity should wind down by early this evening, with any
additional snow accumulations of a few tenths of an inch. Low
clouds with ceilings of 800 to 1500 feet AGL will linger as well
during this period, with some higher ceilings possible at times.
Light north to northwest winds are anticipated this afternoon.

There should be a period of at least partial clearing for a time
this evening into the overnight hours. Light winds with the
partial clearing, with lingering low level moisture, may allow for
light fog to develop.

Winds will back southwest to south overnight and become gusty by
daybreak Friday. The gusty winds will become southwest by midday
into the afternoon. Low ceilings of 1000 to 2000 feet AGL should
move back into the area Friday morning, with 500 to 1000 foot AGL
ceilings in the afternoon and evening.

A strong cold front will move east across the area during the
afternoon. Another round of light to moderate snow showers are
anticipated Friday morning into the afternoon, with snow
accumulations of a half inch or less. Visibility should again
vary between 1 to 5 miles.

There is some potential for brief heavier snow showers to occur
with the cold front in the afternoon, but confidence is moderate
at best at this time. These could bring visibility reductions
under 1 mile for short periods of time.

North to northwest winds prevail over Lake Michigan today as low
pressure continues to move east over Lake Ontario. Confidence
continues to increase for a period of southwest gales on Friday,
ahead of a cold front trailing a low pressure system moves east
across Ontario. A Gale Watch remains in effect for Friday, across
all of the open waters. Once this cold front has cleared Lake
Michigan winds will become west to northwest Friday night into
Saturday. While gales appear likely over the open waters, within
the nearshore the window for gales to 35 knots look to be quite
brief during the mid-morning hours Friday. Given the brief nature
of this gale potential for now opted to go with a Small Craft
Advisory for Friday morning through Friday night. If the window
for gales in the nearshore grows, then an upgrade may be needed.

West to northwest winds will gradually weak behind the cold front
by Saturday morning. Then another developing surface low tracks
northeast towards the region, but is progged to remain south of
Lake Michigan. This will favor winds becoming north to northeast
on Saturday and Sunday. As high pressure builds into the region
from the northwest, this will allow winds to become northwesterly
into early next week.
