Low level warm/moist advection continues across southern
Wisconsin this evening and this has contributed to the
development areas of dense fog. Most concentrated area of dense
fog has been across southwestern Wisconsin, but recent
observations and web cameras indicate decreasing visibility
further north and east. As a result the ongoing dense fog
advisory was extended.

Another extension to the east/north is plausible heading into
the overnight hours, though probabilities of hitting one quarter
mile or less visibility drop to less than 30 percent toward
central Wisconsin and the counties adjacent to Lake Michigan.

Temperatures will move very little the rest of tonight with rain
showers becoming more isolated and replaced by patchy drizzle.

Tonight and Tomorrow:

Widespread rain will continue across the region this afternoon
and into this evening, as an upper level low and surface trough
rotate through the region. Lift will weaken overnight, and along
with it, coverage and intensity of the rain. Low level moisture
will remain in place, however, so areas of fog and drizzle are
expected overnight and into Sunday morning. Will need to watch
for areas of dense fog, especially as winds become light and
variable after midnight.

Some drizzle may linger early on Sunday, but light west winds
will help scour out some of the low level moisture and low cloud
cover. We may see a few peeks of sun during the afternoon, but
confidence is not high. Despite the clouds, temperature will
remain above average, with highs in the low to mid 40s.

.LONG TERM...

Tomorrow Night through Saturday:

A strong Arctic cold front is then expected to barrel into the
area late Sunday evening from the northwest, with temperatures
rapidly falling through the overnight hours, reaching the low to
mid 20s by Monday morning. Strong cold advection combined with a
deep upper low should result in a good setup for post-frontal
snow showers Sunday night and Monday morning. Little in the way
of measurable accumulation is expected, but some slick spots
aren't out of the question by Monday morning given the rapidly
falling air and road temps.

Snow showers will end Monday morning as drier air builds into
the region. Highs will only be in the upper 20s, with a very
blustery northwest wind gusting 30-35 MPH for much of the day,
keeping wind chills in the teens and single digits.

Height rises and large scale warm advection return to the area
starting Tuesday, with a modest improvement in temperatures.
Highs look to be back into the 40s by Wednesday, and are favored
to remain there through the end of the week. A system will pass
by to our south late in the week or early next weekend, which
may bring our next chance for precipitation.

Widespread IFR and LIFR conditions are expected the rest of
tonight and through much of Sunday morning. Highest confidence
in dense fog remain at MSN and JVL, though will be watching UES
closely heading into the overnight hours. SBM, MKE and ENW have
a higher probability of LIFR ceilings with visibility in the
MVFR to high end IFR categories.

A gradual improvement in visibility and ceiling is expected
through the daylight hours of Sunday morning. By midday/early
afternoon, MVFR ceilings are expected with visibility
approaching if not within VFR.

Winds will be southerly the rest of tonight, shift to the
southwesterly Sunday. A strong cold front will enter from the
northwest Sunday evening with winds shifting to the northwest
and an abrupt drop in temperatures. We are monitoring snow
showers heading into overnight Sunday night.

Southeasterly winds will gradually diminish tonight as low
pressure swings across the lake, and eventually merges with a
low over James Bay. A Small Craft Advisory continues into this
evening for the northern half of the nearshore.  Winds will be
light from the west and southwest on Sunday, before a strong
cold front sweeps across the lake Sunday night.

That front will bring strong northwest winds to the lake Sunday
night and Monday, with gales to 40 knots looking increasing
likely. A Gale Watch remains in effect for this time period for
both the open waters and the nearshore. A tight pressure
gradient across the area, thanks to a strong low over New
England and high pressure over the Great Plains, will help
sustains those gales into Monday evening. Very high waves are
also expected over the southern and eastern portions of the
lake.

Winds look to weaken and turn back to the west and southwest on
Tuesday, as the Great Plains high pushes into the Ohio Valley.
