* IMPACTS...Rip currents can sweep even the best swimmers away 
  from shore into deeper water. Dangerous shore break can throw 
  a swimmer or surfer head first into the bottom causing neck 
  and back injuries. Strong longshore currents will create 
  dangerous swimming conditions.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...

Swimmers should remain out of the water due to dangerous surf 
conditions.

Life-threatening rip currents. If caught in a rip current, remain
calm. Swim in a direction following the shoreline. If tired,
float or tread water until out of the rip current. If unable to
escape, face the shore and call or wave for help.

Shore break occurs when waves break directly on the beach. It is
extremely important to protect your head and neck whenever you
are in breaking waves by keeping your hands in front of you at
all times.

Strong longshore currents can sweep swimmers and surfers into rip
currents, piers, jetties and other hazardous areas. In many
cases, the longshore current is strong enough to prevent swimmers
from being able to keep their feet on the bottom making it
difficult to return to shore.

Area Forecast Discussion

.SYNOPSIS...
A second high pressure system continues to build southwards
from Canada move little through the weekend. At the same time
low pressure is forecast to develop offshore Friday and will
bring windy and unsettled weather to eastern NC as it tracks
onshore across the Carolinas this weekend and persists across
the area potentially into early next week.

.NEAR TERM /UNTIL 6 AM FRIDAY MORNING/...
As of 8 PM Thursday...Forecast in good shape and minimal changes
made for the evening update. Light showers diminishing across
most areas, except a few showers persist along the Crystal
Coast. Expect mainly dry conditions overnight.

Previous discussion...Broad Canadian high pressure remains in
control over much of the eastern CONUS, butting up against a
stalled frontal boundary sitting well offshore and extending
west across the northern Bahamas and the Florida Peninsula.
Along this boundary, low pressure is developing over the Bahamas
and will eventually bring impacts to the Carolinas in the
medium range period.

Robust dry sub-cloud layer below 10 kft means mostly dry
conditions will prevail inland, but have been nudging PoPs up
for coastal zones to the Inner Banks where showers associated
with a prefrontal trough have been ongoing all day and are
trying their best to work onshore. Aloft, overcast conditions
are expected with plenty of mid- level and high- level decks.
Lower clouds remain along the Outer Banks continue and will
gradually spread inland early this evening.

Winds will slowly increase tonight as the low offshore
continues to deepen and slowly lift north. Mostly dry
conditions again remain except for perhaps the southern coast as
the frontal boundary offshore and associated precip gradually
migrate north. Continued increase in low-level clouds, and the
aforementioned winds, point to lows a few degrees warmer than
this morning - in the mid 50s inland, around 60 along the
coast.

.SHORT TERM /6 AM FRIDAY MORNING THROUGH 6 PM FRIDAY/...
As of 1600 Thursday...Cloudy, windy, and relatively cool day on
deck with rain chances increasing through the day from SE to
NW. The aforementioned developing offshore low will drift slowly
N Friday. Shower activity should start along the immediate
southern and central coast Fri morning then spread slowly north
and toward the HWY17 corridor. Showers penetrating further
inland are expected to remain relatively light compared to
ongoing convection offshore that will be delayed in
overspreading coastal areas late. Areas N/W of HWY24 are
forecast to receive less than a tenth of an inch with the
immediate coast, highest Cape Lookout, receiving tenth to a
quarter inch.

With the continually tightening of the pressure gradient, strong
NEerly winds persist with widespread winds 12-18G25-30KT inland,
with 25-30G40+KT along the immediate coast. These winds have
prompted the issuance of a Windy Advisory for Down East
Carteret N all the way through NOBX. The continued fetch of
the strong NEerly winds means a likely rise in water levels
across the southwestern Pamlico Sound and inland waters.
Additional flooding, coupled with rough surf, will plague areas
north of Cape Lookout. See the TIDES/COASTAL FLOOD section for
details.

.LONG TERM /FRIDAY NIGHT THROUGH THURSDAY/...
As of 405 PM Thu...The long term period will start out windy
and wet with below normal temperatures. This will be primarily
the result of a cut off upper low and it's associated surface
low developing off the southeast coast then coming ashore
somewhere in the Carolinas over the holiday weekend. With a mid
level "Rex" block developing over the CONUS this weekend into
early next week, the unsettled pattern is likely to linger into
early next week before a return to more typical summer weather
occurs mid next week.

Friday night through Tuesday...The low is forecast to move
ashore somewhere over the Carolinas Sat or Sat night. A warm
front will extend east from the low and move slowly north across
eastern NC Sat into Sunday. As this occurs, widespread
showers/possible thunderstorms will occur across eastern NC.
Ongoing shower activity persists Fri night continuing to spread
further inland through Sat night. Significant rainfall is
expected with this system with 2-4" with locally heavier amounts
possible by Mon morning. Strong winds will also accompany this
system with gusts of 45-50 mph possible along the immediate
coast from late Fri into Sat. The active Wind Advisory persists
for Eastern Carteret and Hatteras and Ocracoke Islands into
Saturday morning. It is also work noting that the low currently
appears cold core/non- tropical, but will nonetheless continue
to be monitored closely by NHC and WPC. Sat looks particularly
chilly with temps likely not rising much above 70 degrees across
much of the area.

With mid level blocking, upper troughing looks to persist into
the early part of next week, resulting in unsettled weather
continuing at least through Tuesday.

.AVIATION /00Z FRIDAY THROUGH TUESDAY/...
SHORT TERM /Through Friday/...
As of 8 PM Thursday...Pred VFR though the TAF period with gusty
NE winds persisting. Light showers activity diminishing inland
but continuing along the immediate coast where MVFR cigs reside.
Guidance showing some of the lower cigs may work its way inland
to EWN/OAJ this evening but confidence is low and put a tempo
group for now. Wind gusts up to 25-30 kt will develop by mid
morning Friday which will bring a cross wind component to EWN
runway 14R/32L.

LONG TERM /Friday through Monday/...
As of 305 PM Thursday...Late week and over the weekend
prevailing sub-VFR conditions are possible as an area of low
pressure with widespread precipitation and strong winds affects
the area. Breezy to windy conditions are expected Fri and Sat
due to the the tight gradient between high pressure to the north
and the developing low to the south. The low is forecast to
weaken but remain over the region into early next week
potentially producing occasional sub VFR conditions Sunday and
Mon.

.MARINE...
SHORT TERM /through Thursday night/...
As of 1600 Thursday...All active marine hazards have been
upgraded to Gale Warnings. Currently, Gale Warnings in effect
for coastal waters S of Oregon Inlet and Pamlico Sound for gusts
35-40kt. Conditions worsen through the short term period and
into Memorial Day weekend. Dry cold front crossing Sern- most
waters continues to sink S of the area with high pressure
continuing to build in from the N. Incoming high press combined
with deepening low pressure along a stalled frontal boundary
well to our south, a marked increase in winds persists through
evening. The high will not budge much, and winds are only
expected to remain steady and then eventually increase by Friday
morning as the surface low lifts north and deepens, further
pinching the pressure gradient. Thus, offshore conditions are
only expected to worsen through the period with seas reaching
8-11 feet in Raleigh Bay and outer portions of Onslow Bay, and
7-9 feet north of Cape Hatteras by Fri morning.

LONG TERM /Friday through Monday/...
As of 405 PM Thursday...Hazardous marine conditions are
expected through the period the weekend with strong winds and
dangerous seas. Gale Warnings are in now in effect for all
waters. Conditions are expected to continue to deteriorate Fri
and Fri night as the pressure gradient is forecast to remain
tight between developing low pressure offshore and strong
ridging to the north. Gale Force northeasterly winds spreads
north across the northern waters and sounds and inland rivers
Fri into Fri night. Winds are forecast to diminish below Gale
Force Sat afternoon and below 25 kt Sunday. Seas continue to
increase along with the winds, building to 7-17ft, highest over
outer central waters, Fri into Sat then subsiding below 6 ft
Sunday night. Lighter flow around 10 kt is expected on Memorial
Day.

.TIDES/COASTAL FLOODING...
As of 330 PM Thu...A developing low pressure system to our
south will produce a prolonged period of NE winds from today
through most of this weekend. As a result of these strong winds
minor to moderate coastal flooding is anticipated adjacent to
the southeastern portion of the Pamlico Sound, and along the
lower Neuse and Pamlico Rivers. The greatest flood threat will
exist up the Neuse and Bay Rivers, where 3 to 4 ft of inundation
AGL is expected, and a Coastal Flood Warning has been issued. A
Coastal Flood Advisory has been issued for the surrounding
areas, including Down East Carteret and areas adjacent to the
Pamlico and Pungo Rivers. Here inundation of 2 to 3 ft AGL is
expected.

Additionally, large swells from this system will lead to some ocean
side/beach impacts for east facing shorelines, namely dangerous
shore break, minor beach erosion and isolated areas of overwash. A
High Surf Advisory has been issued for portions of the Outer Banks
and Core Banks for these hazards. There will also be a threat of
dangerous rip currents for most Eastern NC beaches through the
weekend and possible into early next week.
