.DISCUSSION...The latest satellite image shows smoke settling into
portions of Douglas County and Klamath County from the Bedrock
Fire and the Illinois Valley from the Flat Fire. As we get further
along into the morning. mixing will increase which will aid in
dispersing the smoke. However breezy northwest winds will bring
smoke back into portions of Klamath and Lake County later this
afternoon and evening.

Marine stratus remains along the coast and coastal river valleys,
although the stratus away from the coast is gradually burning off.
The marine stratus will continue to persist along the coast for
most of the day.

Today will be dry, then the focus of concern will be Thursday and
Friday for thunderstorms, primarily in northern California and
east of the Cascades. One thing of note, a couple of the high res
model wind fields suggest there could be moderate to strong outflow
winds near thunderstorms both Thursday and Friday later in the
afternoon and early evening.

The forecast for today is pretty much on track. Other than adding
some detail to the sky cover for today, no other changes are

.AVIATION...02/12Z TAFs...A marine layer is resulting in IFR
ceilings for North Bend. This will likely continue through the
morning before some relief in the daytime; however, ceilings will
likely go back down to IFR once the marine layer reestablishes
tonight. Elsewhere, our inland TAF sites will experience VFR
conditions throughout the valid TAF period.

.MARINE...Updated 840 AM PDT Wednesday, August 2, 2023...North winds
will continue to diminish today, resulting calmer conditions for the
next couple of days. The thermal trough will once again strengthen,
and this could allow for wind driven seas to become steep, possibly
starting as early as late Friday afternoon, but more likely Friday
night and continue through at least the weekend. This is especially
true for areas south of Cape Blanco where the strongest winds are

.PREV DISCUSSION... /Issued 507 AM PDT Wed Aug 2 2023/

DISCUSSION...The focus for the updated forecast was upon fine
tuning the probability of thunderstorms this afternoon through
Sunday evening. As low pressure over western Canada tracks
northeastward today, another weaker trough will track toward the
Oregon coast and monsoonal moisture over Nevada will move north-
northwestward toward Lake and Modoc counties. By this evening,
weak instability with a 10% to 15 % probability of thunderstorms
will just extend to the eastern edge of our area, around Wagontire
and Hart Mountain.

The Pacific trough will move closer to the coast Thursday then
inland Friday. The Fire Weather Watch remains in effect east of
the Cascades for Thursday through Friday. A slight chance to
chance of thunderstorms (15% to 25%) will develop east of the
Cascades Thursday, a slight chance of thunderstorms (5% to 15%)
may linger overnight, then a higher probability (20% to 40%)
develops over a broader area, from the Cascades eastward and also
into southwest Siskiyou County, Friday afternoon and evening.

The trough is expected to shift east of the Cascades Saturday with
weak instability and a 10% to 30% probability of thunderstorms
again late in the day for the east side. Also as a result, a
warming trend will begin Saturday. The warming trend will continue
Sunday into Monday with the air mass expected to stabilize as a
ridge builds east into our area. From today through the weekend,
temperatures and breezy afternoon winds will be near to slightly
above normal. Meantime, coastal conditions are expected to remain
cool with night and morning stratus mainly north of Cape Blanco...
into the lower Umpqua and Coquille valleys.

Uncertainty in the forecast increases beyond Sunday, but a
maritime influenced westerly flow aloft will bring the
aforementioned stable air mass, and some modest cooling for
Tuesday and Wednesday.

Fire Weather Watch remains in effect for FWZ-624/625 starting
Thursday east of the Cascades, continuing through Friday as there is
an increased chance for thunderstorms from the Cascades eastward.
The chance of lightning east of the Cascades is 20-30% Thursday
afternoon, 30-50% Friday afternoon. Saturday, thunderstorm chances
are lower, (15-30%), with highest probability over the higher
terrain north and east of Klamath Falls.

There is higher confidence that storms will start off dry on
Thursday, even under the storm cores. By Friday, storms are expected
to moisten up, with the chance of a wetting rain (greater than 0.1")
increasing up to 10%. Storms on Thursday and Friday should have a
northbound storm motion at about 15 mph, and on Saturday, storms are
forecasted to move east at around 5-10 mph.

First, a ridge of high pressure will persist today with slightly
above normal temperatures, and normal to slightly stronger than
normal winds. At their peak late this afternoon, winds west of the
Cascades will be in critical values again today.

A stable air mass may develop by Sunday, and is expected Monday in
to Wednesday. A coastal thermal trough is expected along the
southern coast today into the weekend.  This will result in modest
north east winds around the Flat fire and light northerly winds over
the. Golden fire. Temperatures will trend higher while humidities
will trend lower. In addition, the overnight marine push to the
coast north of Cape Blanco and into coastal valleys should continue
each night into early next week.
