.UPDATE...The forecast for northern California and southern Oregon
remains on track. A ridge remains solidly in place over the
southern US while an upper low remains near Vancouver Island. This
will keep temperatures in the high 80s to low 90s for inland
areas, with slightly lower temperatures along the coast.

Smoke from the Flat Fire remains a concern for Curry and Josephine
counties. Surface winds will blow smoke south along the coast and
upper level flow will take smoke to the north-northeast. Those
attending the Curry County Fair and have respiratory concerns may
want to take extra precautions. -TAD

Updated Aviation Discussion.

DISCUSSION...With a closed upper low offshore from the tip of
Vancouver island and an upper ridge over the Rockies the region is
in a southwesterly flow pattern. GEFS ensemble spaghetti plots are
in remarkably good agreement through the extended forecast into
mid next week, keeping the region dry with temperatures near
normal.

Fire activity on both the Flat fire in the coastal ranges south of
Agness, and the Bedrock fire in eastern Lane county are showing
similar to Wednesday night, and with wind patterns similar to
yesterday smoke to both develop and spread similar to what
happened yesterday. This is expected to continue more localized
smoke ranging from the Curry county coast and spreading into the
Illinois valley this afternoon. Smoke from the more active Bedrock
fire will be more widespread and affect more areas east of the
Cascades.

As we go past mid next week there is more variation with the
ensemble plots with a small percentage indicating a weak upper low
moving through the continued southwesterly zonal flow, bringing
weak monsoonal moisture and possible convection towards the end of
next week. However, with the amount of plots and meteogram members
still being a small percentage, the extended portion of the
forecast is expected to remain dry at this time.

FIRE WEATHER...Smoke is lazily drifting off the southern fringes
of the Flat and Bedrock fires. The smoke has been most impactful
near Gold Beach from the Flat fire, where visibilities are being
reduced down to around 5 SM. The main smoke plume is heading
towards Brookings, but should not deteriorate visibilities
anymore than it did at Gold Beach if at all. Smoke from the
Bedrock fire is getting trapped in the west slopes of the
Cascades, leaving high visibilities in northern Lake and Klamath
County. These conditions should persist through tonight.

Conditions will dry out Friday as winds pick up with a tightening
pressure gradient that forms along a shallow mid-level shortwave.
This will elevate fire weather concerns east of the Cascades and
north eastern California. While most areas will only remain in
elevated conditions, a red flag warning is needed in southeast FWZ
624 on Friday for gusty winds and low humidities.

Conditions ramp up on Saturday with red flag criteria being met
for areas of FWZ-624, 625, and 284, 285 for winds and low
humidity. We’re forecasting large areas of wind gusts around 30
mph and humidities between 9 and 15 percent for a few hours, which
is our red flag criteria for zones east of the Cascades. This
isn’t an extreme event with regards to winds and ensembles are
classifying these winds in the 90th percentile; a pretty typical
red flag event for locations east of the Cascades. Given all of
this, we have issued a fire weather watch, with the area of lowest
confidence being for FWZ-625 and 284. Conditions look to remain
critical on Sunday, with dry and west-southwest conditions
persisting. We will evaluate the need for further watches/warnings
that afternoon and evening.

While all this is going on east for the Cascades, on the west
side fairly typical conditions are expected. Afternoon breezes may
be amplified by three to eight mph, but with minimum humidity
values in the 20s or upper-teens, fire weather concerns aren’t all
that high. It is worth noting some gusty north winds around 30
mph will be present in the Shasta Valley, but both humidities and
duration are not expected to reach criteria. Marine pushes into
Douglas County and other coastal valleys are also expected,
limiting concern along the coast.

Port Orford. North Bend currently has MVFR ceilings. Could not rule
out brief periods of IFR ceilings between 13 and 15z, but confidence
is not high enough to include a TEMPO or FM group in the TAF. The
marine stratus is expected to gradually burn off with VFR ceilings
early in the afternoon into early this evening before the marine
stratus redevelops again between 2-4z.

Inland, other than the marine stratus in the Coquille Basin, which
should burn off between 17-18z, VFR conditions will prevail through
the TAF period with the usual gusty afternoon and early evening
breezes for all terminals. However, smoke will continue to bring
reduced visibilities in the vicinity of the Flat fire
(Curry/Josephine Counties) and Bedrock fire (northern Klamath and

MARINE...Updated 200 AM PDT Friday, July 28, 2023...Moderate north
winds will continue today. while brief periods of small craft
conditions are possible between 5 and 20 nm from shore south of Port
Orford due to peak wind gusts. Sustained winds will remain below
small craft through Saturday. North winds will increase Sunday and
lasting into at least the first half of next week, with steep seas
and advisory level conditions likely returning. The combination of
elevated winds and steep seas may bring Hazardous Seas conditions to
localized areas south of Gold Beach as well. -Petrucelli
