.DISCUSSION...Low pressure centered out near 46N and 132W early
this morning is bringing another dynamic front into the area. The
front is just offshore this morning with strong mid-level south
winds in advance of it -- 75kt at 700mb -- and some of this is
reaching the ground as strong wind gusts. After a brief period of
rain here at the airport, the wind kicked in and we had a gust to
51 mph just after 2 am. Other notable wind gusts in the last few
hours were 64 mph at Weed airport. The core of these strong winds
will shift north and east this morning, but could linger over the
East Side through early afternoon. So, we have extended the wind
headlines over there through 1 pm PST. We'll probably be able to
expire the current wind headlines in the Shasta/Rogue Valleys and
remainder of the west side at 4 am.
Meanwhile, the strong south winds have resulted in maximum
orographic lift and upslope flow into the Mt. Shasta region.
Latest web cams down there and reports from law enforcement are
showing this this strong lift has driven the snow level all the
way down to Dunsmuir with at least some snow on I-5 there. The
heaviest snow impacts though are occurring above 3500 feet. Winter
storm warnings remain in effect for most of Siskiyou County above
3500 feet, except above 4000 feet in western Siskiyou where snow
levels are a bit higher. Snow will continue, heavy at times this
morning before tapering off by 9 or 10 am.
There have been a few lightning strikes in the coastal waters to
our south this morning, as well as in portions of NorCal. Isolated
thunderstorms are possible as the front makes its way onshore this
morning.
We'll get a break this afternoon as the occlusion weakens and
winds aloft relax. Most areas will dry out, though some light
precipitation could continue in the Mt Shasta region and along the
coast. The break will be short-lived. Another potent low will
develop offshore tonight and move northward along the PacNW coast
overnight into Monday morning. This will bring another round of
wind, rain and snow. We have a high wind watch out for the coast
at this time and we'll likely need additional wind headlines for
inland areas. We'll be working on those this morning as current
wind headlines end. Snow levels look a bit higher tonight into
Monday, but expect some accumulation again above 4000 feet in the
Mt. Shasta region with best upslope flow occurring from 10pm this
evening through 7 am Monday. We'll be evaluating the potential for
additional winter headlines down there as well. This low will push
out of the area Monday afternoon and night. -Spilde
.LONG TERM...Tuesday, January 10 through Saturday, January 14,
2023...The upper trough centered to the south will gradually move
eastward on Tuesday. With this pattern expect showers across much of
the area on Tuesday. Snow levels are expected in the 4000 to 4500 ft
range during this period. Then, models continue to show a weak
ridge building into the area Tuesday night and Wednesday while a
strong frontal system approaches from the west. Models support light
to moderate precipitation spreading inland as a warm front lifts
north over the area Wednesday. The cold front will approach the
coast late Wednesday. However, models and ensembles indicate that he
high pressure ridge, centered to the east, will strengthen late
Wednesday into Thursday. As a result the front is forecast to remain
just off the PacNW coast. Depending on the strength and position of
the ridge, this may result in the bulk of the precipitation
remaining over western and southwestern portions of the area, mainly
the coastal waters, coast and western Siskiyou County with much
lighter precipitation across other inland areas. Strong winds are
likely ahead of this front, especially across the coastal waters,
and gusty winds are possible across many inland areas. By Friday,
models show evidence that an upper trough will approach the PacNW
and the front will push inland over the area bringing rain and
mountain snow. Models and ensembles then show a low pressure center
and frontal system moving towards the region from the northwest next
Saturday bringing the potential for additional wet and windy

.AVIATION...08/06Z TAFs...Another front will move into the area
tonight into Sunday. This will result areas or rain and snow and
gusty winds through the period. Areas of MVFR and IFR cigs in snow
will affect northern California, including Mount Shasta City, with
generally VFR expected elsewhere. Strong south flow aloft will
remain over the region as deep low pressure remains active over the
Eastern Pacific. This will result in low level wind speed shear at
Roseburg and Medford, despite the fact surface winds at Medford
could peak out around 35 kts.
Along the coast, a subtle increase in the flow aloft tonight will
allow for a developing low level wind shear as near-surface winds
remain offshore and fairly light. Strong, gusty surface winds will
occur across inland areas, including Medford, the Shasta Valley and
