Upper level ridging will persist through late Monday, providing
us with fair, mostly pleasant weather to start the new week before
our next system arrives Monday night. Benefiting from increased
thickness under the ridge and light southerly flow, high
temperatures this afternoon soar into the upper 60s and low 70s.
Upper level clouds will likely limit highs a few degrees from our
full potential though. Lows tonight trickle a few degrees higher
than tonight with continued light south winds and cirrus cloud
cover, falling to the 30s and 40s by Monday morning. As the next
upper trough approaches Monday afternoon, decreased thickness
keeps highs a few degrees cooler than today's, though still
largely reaching the mid to upper 60s. Moisture and lift ahead of
the trough may lead to a few rain showers across the Guadalupe
Mountains and far western zones Monday afternoon, though any
amounts stay low. A fairly stout low level jet will set up with
this system late Monday afternoon across the lower Trans Pecos and
Permian Basin, leading to windy to very windy conditions to start
the long term.

A long wave trough over the western United States will create a
favorable pattern for a succession two upper lows to move into
the Central Plains this week. The first low moves into West Texas
and eastern New Mexico Monday night. Models are showing
precipitation developing and quickly moving across the area and
NBM guidance agrees with chance to likely PoPs for most areas
north of I-10. However humidities in the 20s to 40s indicate very
dry air at the surface will evaporate much of the rainfall and
combined with fast movement of the showers suggest a low QPF event
where few locations will receive more than a tenth of an inch.

The main threat from these lows will not be precipitation, but
wind. The long wave trough favors a southerly jet stream location
which will keep our CWA in a very windy pattern beginning on
Monday and continuing into late Wednesday. The first low pushes a
Pacific cold front through the area Monday night bringing very
windy conditions, especially to the Guadalupe and Davis Mountains.
Winds subside briefly Tuesday night before the second low
pressure system sends another front into West Texas on Wednesday
increasing winds once again. For now have issued a High Wind Watch
for Monday night into Tuesday for the initial bout of strong
winds. A Wind Advisory will be needed later for many surrounding
areas not currently in the watch. The watch may need to be
extended into Wednesday when the second round of winds hits but
that can wait for later as it extends into the Day 4 time frame
and is too far out to include at this time. Winds finally relax
Thursday as high pressure builds south.

As stated above, the Monday night cold front will be Pacific in
origin and will be highly modified moving across the western
mountains. Therefore its arrival will not bring any significant
cooling. The second front arriving on Wednesday will drop
southeast out of Canada and will have colder temperatures
associated with it so highs ending the week will be below normal.

The windy conditions this week will increase the fire weather
threat for West Texas and southeastern New Mexico. ERC values will
steadily increase as minimum afternoon humidities drop into the
teens and 20s each day. Winds will be strongest on Tuesday, but
Wednesday could see the worst fire weather conditions due to poor
recovery the night before setting up low humidities during the
day. Conditions improve Thursday with the arrival of colder air
and diminishing winds.
