Despite the breezy southwest winds today, it will feel like a
break from the windy conditions between what happened Monday,
and what's on tap for tomorrow. Latest water vapor imagery
indicates a deepening trough with a subtle positive tilt currently
located over the Great Basin, and this trough is progged to swing
eastward across the Four Corners Region by tonight, then progress
into the Central Plains by Wednesday evening. This trough will be
the main driving force behind the active weather expected across
the region over the next 36 hours. Today, as mentioned, will be
noticeably less windy, though will see continued above normal
temperatures thanks to downsloping southwesterly surface flow,
with highs ranging from the upper 50s and lower 60s west to lower
70s east, and 80s possible through portions of the Rio Grande
Valley in the Big Bend. Subtle shortwaves embedded in the
southwesterly flow aloft ahead of the approaching trough may also
yield some light showers across the area today, first across the
higher terrain across the west this morning, then progressing
across the Permian Basin into this evening. Showers should remain
fairly isolated, with only light rainfall amounts expected, not
enough to make a difference when it comes to our ongoing drought.
Tonight into Wednesday, focus turns to the aforementioned trough
as it progresses north of the region. This northward track will,
once again, yield a period of windy to very windy conditions
regionwide, beginning Wednesday morning. Given the timing of the
trough, its accompanying Pacific front will sweep across Southeast
New Mexico and West Texas prior to daybreak Wednesday, with gusty
west winds in its wake yielding high winds first across the
mountain areas to the west, then expanding across the plains
through the afternoon. An accompanying 40-50kt 700mb jet will
yield very windy conditions across the higher terrain of the
Guadalupe Mountains, where gusts up to around 80 mph are possible.
A High Wind Watch has been issued beginning Wednesday morning,
not just for the Guadalupe and Delaware Mountains, but also across
the Eddy County Plains, Culberson County, Reeves County, and the
Davis Mountains and Davis Mountains Foothills, where wind gusts to
65 mph will be possible. Widespread advisory conditions are also
anticipated on Wednesday afternoon as the aforementioned jet moves
overhead and mixing is maximized during peak heating under clear
skies. However, will defer to later shifts to iron out the
details/coverage of any forthcoming Wind Advisories. As is the
case with windy days in this neck of the woods, blowing dust is
also possible across a large swath of the area Wednesday, thus
travel conditions will be hazardous not only due to the high winds
and crosswinds on north-south oriented roadways, but also due to
possible visibility reductions in blowing dust. In the wake of
Wednesday morning's Pacific front, highs Wednesday will be cooler,
with temperatures Wednesday afternoon in the 40s across the
mountains and 50s/60s across lower elevations. Finally, despite
the cooler temperatures, the antecedent dry and windy conditions
will likely yield widespread near critical and critical fire
weather conditions Wednesday afternoon. Additional details

The progressive upper lvl pattern will continue through this
weekend. We will see a much needed reprieve from the winds on
Thursday and Friday as an upper lvl low continues to lift into the
Upper Mid West and lighter zonal flow sets up over the forecast
area. Wind speeds on Thursday look to be less than 15 kts region-
wide with cooler highs in the upper 50s to lower 60s in most
locations. Friday will feature breezy southerly return flow with a
slight warm up into mid 60s. The next upper lvl system will begin
to rotate through the southwestern U.S. late Friday into Saturday
morning. There may be enough lift and moisture with this system
to generate light showers across far northern portions of the area
Saturday morning. A wintry mix will be possible in SE NM, but
most of the precip looks to remain north between LUB and AMA. The
aforementioned trough will quickly progress into the Southern
Plains on Saturday, dragging a Pacific cold front through our
region. This front will keep highs cooler in the 40s and 50s in
most locations. We will finally see widespread freezing
temperatures on Sunday morning, which has been largely absent
through much of this month. Yet another storm system will dive swd
across the Intermountain West on Sunday and Monday. This trough
looks to be a bit stronger and deeper than previous systems and
could bring a decent shot of cold air to our region on Monday and
Tuesday. Precipitation chances will also increase across northern
portions of the area late Monday into early Tuesday. The evolution
of this system will bear watching over the next several days.

A strong storm system will arrive on Wednesday, resulting in very
windy and dry conditions area-wide. Relative humidity is expected
to fall to around 15-20 percent Wednesday afternoon with RFTIs
increasing to around 4 or near critical across much of the region.
Given the dry state of finer fuels and higher ERCs across eastern
portions of the region, we have decided to issue a Fire Weather
Watch for the eastern Permian Basin and Lower Trans Pecos
Wednesday afternoon and evening. Winds will be strong across much
of the area, but ERCs are not quite high enough to warrant a watch
for areas further west. Higher humidity and lighter winds are
expected on Thursday and Friday, bringing an end to the fire
weather threat for the remainder of this week.
