* Strong Cold Front to Arrive Early Sunday Morning, Along With
  Widespread Rain Chances

Today will be the veritable "calm before the storm", though it won't
be without its own challenges. Yesterday's front remains draped
roughly along the Pecos River Valley, remaining rather diffuse. Last
evening and overnight, it has served as a focus for showers and a
few thunderstorms, mainly just to the east of the area across the
Concho Valley and Edwards Plateau. This activity will likely
continue through daybreak, perhaps developing westward as the front
begins its slow northward trek. Cloudy conditions will persist for
most of the day along and east/north of the Pecos River, with some
clearing from west to east expected during the afternoon. However,
this cloud cover as well as an only slightly modified post-frontal
air mass will keep temperatures on the cool side, especially across
the northern Permian Basin where highs may settle in the upper 50s
and 60s north of the main boundary. 70s and lower 80s are expected
elsewhere, with the warmest temperatures in the upper 80s to around
90 degrees along the Rio Grande Valley. Aloft, southwesterly flow
persists today ahead of a broad longwave trough extending from the
northern Plains across the Great Basin. The trough will continue
amplifying as it slowly translates eastward, coincident with
increasing mid- and low-level moisture across the region. Late this
afternoon, CAMs are in favor of some isolated storms developing in
the vicinity of the higher terrain across Southeast New Mexico and
West Texas where clearing is expected and upslope surface flow will
aid in storm development as the aforementioned front drifts
northward. Storms are expected to progress eastward across the Upper
Trans Pecos into the Permian Basin and Stockton Plateau by evening,
with the strongest storms capable of producing isolated strong wind
gusts and hail, along with locally heavy rainfall.

Tonight, increasing ascent ahead of the approaching trough and the
much-advertised cold front will coincide with a surge of mid-level
moisture to yield an uptick in rain/storm chances, especially across
the eastern Permian Basin southwestward across the Trans Pecos
toward the Davis Mountains. The greatest storm chances through
tonight will be across the Permian Basin, diminishing further south
and west. Increasing precipitable water values will lend to a heavy
rain/localized flooding concern, especially across the Permian Basin
where cell training may occur. The strong cold front will edge into
Southeast New Mexico and the northern Permian Basin just prior to
daybreak Sunday morning, then quickly progress southward through the
area and reach the Rio Grande by mid- to late afternoon. Given the
timing and strength of this front, locations across Southeast New
Mexico and the Permian Basin will likely see falling temperatures
through the day, with only a brief period of warming expected along
and south of I-10 before the front makes it through the region.
Thus, temperatures Sunday afternoon will be in the 30s and 40s
roughly along and north of I-10, with coldest temperatures across
northern areas, and 60s to 80s along and south of US90.

In addition to the wild temperature swing, widespread showers and
thunderstorms are expected to develop on Sunday thanks to isentropic
ascent and forcing due to the quickly progressing cold front. Severe
weather is not anticipated, however, locally heavy rainfall and
localized flooding may occur, particularly where cell training
occurs and over urban areas and/or areas that received substantial
rainfall last Monday and Tuesday. The greatest chance for
precipitation and heavy rain will be across eastern areas from the
Permian Basin to the Stockton Plateau, though most will see some
measurable precipitation from this event beginning on Sunday. As
temperatures fall during the afternoon on Sunday, locations across
northern Lea county may reach freezing, resulting in the potential
for a mix of rain and freezing rain/freezing drizzle. Fortunately,
given this is the first strong cold front, there is still a lot of
heat stored in the ground, thus ice accretion will be minimal if
any, with the exception of perhaps some elevated surfaces.
Elsewhere, precipitation through Sunday afternoon will remain of the
liquid, non-freezing variety.

(Sunday night through Friday)

A messy forecast remains on tap Sunday night and Monday.  Sunday
evening, the upper-level trough will be passing through the Four
Corners, leaving West Texas and Southeast New Mexico under southwest
flow aloft.  At the surface, the cold front will have just cleared
the Rio Grande, and momentum looks to produce high gap winds through
Guadalupe Pass. A High Wind Watch has been issued. Wind
Advisories may be needed in subsequent forecasts for the higher
elevations over the southwestern zones. Convection should be
ongoing across the CWA, with a little thunder over the southeast.
As CAA continues overnight, rain from the Guadalupes to
central/northern Lea County should changeover to a wintry mix, but
accumulations are expected to be light. Of more concern will be
farther south, where forecast soundings suggest a round of FZRA
over the Davis/Glass Mountains. Since accumulations are advisory
criteria, we're reluctant to issue a watch attm, and will let the
next shift pull that trigger if still warranted. In the meantime,
we'll hit it in the HWO. Much of Southeast New Mexico, the
northwest Permian Basin, and the higher elevations look to
experience the first freeze of the fall Sunday night/Monday
morning, so we've gone ahead and issued a freeze watch.

Monday morning, precipitation will taper off to the southeast,
leaving the coldest day of this forecast in its wake, with highs
most locations unfortunately stuck in the 40s.

A gradual warmup ensues into next weekend under dry northwest flow
aloft.  More widespread freezes are anticipated Tuesday and
Wednesday mornings.  With any luck, highs by Friday afternoon should
be back up to around normal.

A quasistationary warm front extends from near KCNM to about 15 N
KINK to about 10 S KMAF. North of the boundary, widespread IFR
conditions in BR/FG and -DZ are observed, while south of the
boundary, skies are becoming VFR. This boundary will slowly lift
northward for a bit, with skies perhaps becoming MVFR at KMAF in a
few hours. Scattered TSRA is expected to develop along the
eastern slopes of the mountains later this afternoon, potentially
impacting KINK, KMAF, and KPEQ later this afternoon/evening.

Then the bottom falls out after midnight as a strong cold front
slides through area terminals. Will see a few hours of gusty winds
behind the front, then winds will be sustained out of the north or
northeast AOA 15 knots with widespread IFR CIGS and VSBYs developing
behind the front after FROPA. Will see some -SHRA/-RA after
daybreak across eastern terminals as an upper level storm system
passes overhead. All in all, not a good day for GA pilots
tomorrow (or any pilots for that matter).
