Current upper air analysis this New Year's morning shows a weak
mid-level ridge axis centered over W TX with a digging upper
trough along the CA coast, which will be our next disturbance in
question this coming week. Prior to any impact from the trough, a
very warm start to 2023 is forecast across the entire forecast
area with thermal ridge alignment perfectly centered over SW TX up
through the Permian Basin, extending as far north as the Red
River. Well-above normal boundary temperatures along with light
downsloping wind component will allow for temperatures to reach
well into the 70s for a majority of the region, especially down in
the RGV over to the eastern 1/2 of W TX zones. Unfortunately the
pattern will remain progressive with this warm afternoon being
only a one day deal as the next system out west begins to impact
our area by Monday AM. Prior to the approach, a very mild morning
is anticipated for Monday with 40s and 50s common across the
entire CWA making this feel more like early spring compared to the
norm.

A swift moving Pacific front will plow east ahead of the mid-level
trough axis providing modest ascent out west for some showers and
even rain/snow mix in the Guadalupes where height falls and
elevation could be enough to get some snow flakes mixing into the
equation Monday AM before dissipating. Temperatures will fall a
solid 10 degrees for most locations on Monday afternoon with 50s
to the north and west and 60s elsewhere. The main story will be
the wind accompanying the storm arrival with a strong 500mb jet
max rotating over the northern 1/3rd of the CWA during peak
mixing. Gusty winds exceeding 35 mph will be common for much of
the area Monday afternoon with advisory level winds likely aligned
across SE NM, the NW Permian Basin, and most places west of the
Pecos river. Patchy blowing dust will be possible over the
northern half of the CWA thanks to the westerly wind component
giving a higher opportunity to usher in some loose soils off the
Continental front and nearby high plains.

Across the Guadalupes, a stout W/SW flow regime will nestle
overhead with guidance signaling the beginning of a prolonged
high wind event for the mountains at all levels above 4500 ft. Gap
flow at GDP will allow for local pressure gradient and wind
maxima to occur Monday PM with gusts up around 75-80 mph to impact
the area. Considering the higher confidence levels with the
incoming disturbance, a High Wind Watch remains in effect from
Monday AM through late Tuesday for the anticipated sustained winds
and wind gusts. An upgrade to a warning is very likely in the
next forecast package given the agreement on all guidance.

.LONG TERM...
(Monday night through Saturday)

Monday night, our next high wind event will be underway across the
Guadalupe and Delaware Mountains, possibly as far south as the
Davis Mountains, as a potent trough rapidly translates from the
Central High Plains toward the Upper Midwest. After winds peak
during the afternoon, they will diminish somewhat overnight,
particularly across the lower elevations. However, gusty
conditions will continue, and another uptick in winds is expected
on Tuesday as a secondary shortwave passes just to the north of
the region on the heels of the departing trough. Winds across the
plains may be stronger on Tuesday afternoon than Monday, with
another round of potentially widespread Advisory conditions
possible. The area of greatest concern when it comes to the high
winds will continue to be the Guadalupe Mountains and immediately
adjacent plains of Southeast New Mexico and West Texas, where NAM
and GFS guidance both maintain a pronounced mountain wave
signature for the duration (though, markedly moreso on the GFS,
per normal). This will yield continued concerns for extreme
turbulence for aircraft flying in the vicinity of the higher
terrain, as well as hazardous driving conditions for high profile
vehicles, particularly on north-south oriented roadways where
crosswinds will be maximized. Windy conditions will continue
through Tuesday night, before rapidly diminishing on Wednesday
morning as the shortwave and attendant jet progress east of the
region. The High Wind Watch that currently extends through early
Wednesday morning will be maintained, though will likely be
upgraded to a High Wind Warning in the next forecast package.

Wednesday night, a cold front will sink southward through the area
in the wake of the departing shortwave as northwesterly flow
develops, yielding the coldest night in the extended with lows
ranging from the upper 20s to middle 30s for most. The cooldown
will be short-lived, as midlevel ridging develops Thursday through
Friday, yielding a warmup from near normal afternoon highs in the
middle 50s to middle 60s Tuesday and Wednesday to above normal
highs in the 60s to around 70 degrees by Friday. Another trough
will pass well to the north of the area Friday night and Saturday,
with temperatures cooling slightly, but still remaining above
normal for early January. For the time being, the continued
progressive pattern will continue to keep any Arctic air confined
well to the north of our area, yielding continued near and above
normal temperatures through the end of next weekend and beyond.
