Increased shower and thunderstorm coverage across the region
through mid morning. A weak, convectively-reinforced cold front
across the northern Permian Basin and a separate mid-level feature
moving into the region are causing the development of showers
with isolated thunder over many locations. This activity is
expected to slowly weaken through mid-morning before everyone
becomes mostly sunny and hot this afternoon.

We'll start off with the good news, the next few days will be a bit
cooler than the last several days with the center of the upper ridge
back over the Great Basin and southern California. This paired with
a weak cold front nosing into the north-central Permian Basin
bringing easterly winds allows the higher elevations and the
northern Permian Basin to only top out in the upper 90s today and
tomorrow with lower 100s found elsewhere. Coverage of heat products
has been decreased, with Heat Advisories now limited to Mitchell and
Brewster Counties, Marfa Plateau, as well as the Davis, Chinati, and
Guadalupe Mountains. The bad news, the upper ridge and widespread
Heat Advisory conditions look to return moving into next week...but
read the Long Term Discussion below if you dare.
Scattered convection is ongoing across portions of eastern New
Mexico and the central Texas Panhandle and given high resolution
models continue to perform poorly with nocturnal convection here,
wouldn't be surprised to see some isolated shower activity to loiter
near the northern Permian Basin as the morning carries on. Afternoon
convection will be diurnally driven again, focused primarily across
the western high terrain. Tomorrow evening, things get a bit more
interesting with a potential MCS scraping into the northern tier.
Daytime convection across the higher terrain of northeastern New
Mexico may develop upscale due to brisk northwesterly flow. As this
complex moves southeastward, the most uncertainty lies in whether or
not it dies in Lubbock's area before nosing into the northern Basin
tonight. Some CAMs show this while others take the complex right
into the north-central Basin around 03-06z tonight. Am more inclined
to buy into the CAMs that keep this complex alive given some of the
struggles seen with the current nocturnal storms. Should this MCS
push into our area tonight, the primary concerns will be strong
winds though a few instances of large hail can't be ruled out.
Beyond tonight, Sunday looks to be dry with even the higher terrain
staying rain-free.

Monday, the Manitoba trough is forecast to eject into northeast
Canada, allowing the upper ridge to nose ESE into West Texas and
Southeast new Mexico. Increasing thicknesses will start the warming
trend again, which now looks to peak this forecast on Tuesday
afternoon, w/highs topping out ~ 11-13F above normal. Meanwhile, a
secondary trough will be skirting southern Canada, flattening the
ridge somewhat, but increased thicknesses look to prevail
nevertheless. Wednesday looks almost as hot...maybe a degree cooler
than Tuesday, as the secondary trough digs into the Great Lakes
region. This southeastward trajectory will shift the ridge ever so
slightly west into the weekend, shaving another couple of degrees
off highs Thursday/Friday. Even so, triple-digit temperatures will
prevail most locations through the extended, with continuing
widespread advisories and maybe even a warning or two, especially
Tuesday. Should these temperatures hold, KMAF is on track to beat
its record of 15 consecutive days of triple-digit highs, set a few
weeks ago.
Unfortunately, overnight lows in the extended, while expected to be
lower than the past few nights, will still remain above normal,
courtesy of a recurring LLJ each night to keep mixing in play. This
will keep ACs working overtime.
Convective chances in the long-term are slim-to-none.

These thunderstorms may slide towards INK and MAF but are expected

ongoing VCTS decreases confidence of later thunderstorm
development. All terminals can expect largely southeasterly winds
