.SYNOPSIS...
High pressure will drift to the east early this morning. A warm
front will approach from the south this morning with rain
chances increasing from west to east late Friday afternoon into
Friday night. Strong low pressure and its attendant cold front
will pass through the region Saturday morning into Saturday
afternoon bringing additional rain showers and strong to locally
damaging winds. High pressure returns Sunday and Monday before
another front midweek.

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TONIGHT/...
The previous forecast remains on track. Big focus today is on
high wind event tomorrow, and decisions on headline placement
and timing. Previous discussion follows...
A warm front currently over the Ohio Valley is slated to track
eastward toward the Mid-Atlantic this morning before lifting
into Pennsylvania by noon. The low-level warm advection should
quickly mix out any residual radiation inversions. Over a
24-hour period, 850-mb temperatures warm by around 6 to 8C which
will allow for a much warmer day. By all accounts the lower
troposphere should be well mixed which brings high temperatures
to near the 70 degree mark from DC and Baltimore southward.
South to southwesterly winds are forecast to be quite breezy at
times with gusts up to 25 to 30 knots, near 40 knots over the
mountains.
While the day starts off dry, clouds will increase from west to
east as precipitation tracks in from the Ohio Valley. This is in
response to multiple weak perturbations in the quasi-zonal flow.
Rain showers reach the Alleghenies by the early/mid afternoon
before reaching the I-95 corridor by the Friday evening commute.
Most areas should see around 0.10 to 0.25 inches of rainfall,
locally higher toward the Potomac Highlands. Remnant activity
begins to exit northeastern Maryland after midnight followed by
a brief lull in the precipitation thereafter. Forecast low
temperatures will be quite mild, generally in the 50s, locally
into the 40s over the Allegheny ridgetops. This is accompanied
by a fairly persistent breezy southwesterly wind.

.SHORT TERM /SATURDAY THROUGH SUNDAY NIGHT/...
A strong upper low initially responsible for active severe
weather along the Mississippi River Valley will push toward the
Great Lakes early Saturday. As the system tracks to the north,
the closed low eventually evolves into more of an open wave.
What remains of upstream convection may bring a decaying squall
line into far western Maryland just before sunrise on Saturday.
Depending on how much instability remains, some residual
elevated thunder may occur over western Maryland early Saturday
morning. The 00Z HREF 40 dBZ paintball plots show some potential
for this weakening line to track east of the terrain during the
early/mid morning hours. High-resolution guidance does show this
feature being ahead of the primary cold front.
A robust wind field accompanies this cold front which has
yielded High Wind Watches from Saturday morning through late
Saturday night from the Blue Ridge and Catoctins westward. Wind
gusts up to 60 to 65 mph are possible which could lead to downed
trees and power outages. Farther east, the deep mixed layer
should easily mix down 40 to 50 mph winds down to the surface.
Wind Advisories may be required for locations downstream of the
Blue Ridge and Catcotins. While downsloping effects should
initially offset the cold advection, temperatures are expected
to quickly fall into Saturday night. Before that occurs,
forecast highs are in the mid/upper 70s which is around 12 to 15
degrees above climatology. Across the mountains, expect high
temperatures in the upper 50s to 60s. Winds turn more
northwesterly overnight, while remaining gusty with speeds
around 20 to 30 mph (30-40 mph for the mountains). Forecast lows
range from the 20s over the higher terrain to the 30s to low 40
elsewhere.
Quieter weather is expected to finish out the weekend with the
strong cold front offshore and high pressure moving in from the
Great Lakes/Ohio Valley. Underneath sunny skies, highs are
likely confined to the 50s to low 60s, with 40s in the
mountains. Northwesterly breezes continue, albeit in a more
subdued manner with gusts around 15 to 20 mph. As winds further
drop off into the night, there will be some threat for patchy
frost on Sunday night with lows in the mid 30s to low 40s.

.LONG TERM /MONDAY THROUGH THURSDAY/...
On Monday, a zonal flow pattern will be in place over the area, with
a trough over the western CONUS. High pressure will be moving off to
the east as a shortwave moving through the Great Lakes and
southeastern Canada brings low pressure to our north. As this low
pressure system passes and continues northeast on Tuesday, an
associated cold front will drape east-west near the area, currently
expected to settle around the PA-MD border. Any showers during the
day Tuesday will be focused on this feature in our northern zones
and along terrain in the west.
By Wednesday, another area of low pressure is expected to move into
the Midwest. As this advances northeast into Canada, a strong cold
front will cross the area Wednesday into Thursday.
Temperatures in the extended will be well above average thanks to
return flow out of the south, with much of the area seeing temps 10
degrees or more above normal. Tuesday and Wednesday will be the
warmest before a cold frontal passage brings temperatures closer to
normal the remainder of the period.

.AVIATION /15Z FRIDAY THROUGH TUESDAY/...
VFR conditions are expected at the terminals through tonight
with increasing southwesterly winds through the day. The latest
TAFs call for such winds gusting up to 25 to 30 knots through
the evening, possibly nearing 35 knots during the overnight
hours. This will lead to some initial low-level wind shear
concerns as well. Some rain showers push through a couple hours
before sundown through portions of the night. Ceilings
gradually lower to MVFR tonight with additional shower chances
the following day.
A decaying line of convection likely tracks through during the
early/mid morning hours on Saturday. Any residual thunder likely
stays west of the terminals. A robust wind field arrives with
the trailing cold front which tracks through during the mid/late
morning. Westerly winds may gust up to 40 to 45 knots from the
mid-morning through the evening before gradually dropping to 20
to 30 knots late Saturday. Gradients gradually loosen into
Sunday with northwesterly breezes dropping back to the 15 to 20
knot range. Despite the high winds much of the weekend,
conditions remain VFR aside from the period of MVFR ceilings
Friday night into early Saturday morning.
VFR conditions are expected most of Monday with high pressure, but
conditions may deteriorate Monday night and Tuesday as precipitation
moves into the area.

.MARINE...
With persistent southerly flow up the Chesapeake Bay, Small
Craft Advisories are in effect for most of the waters through
the mid-morning. This is eventually spans all waters through
late tonight. The warmer air mass on top of the colder waters
may make vertical mixing tough outside of the shorelines.
A decaying convective line approaches the mountains early
Saturday before falling apart before reaching the tidal Potomac
and Chesapeake Bay. However, behind this line, a formidable cold
front follows which reaches the I-95 corridor by the mid/late
morning. Gale Watches remain in effect for all waters on
Saturday into the late evening hours. Gusts up to 35 to 40 knots
are possible during this time with any travel on the waterways
being dangerous. Gusty wind continue into the overnight and the
first half of Sunday which will warrant Small Craft Advisories.
SCA conditions are likely Monday into Tuesday morning. Winds may
remain near or just below SCA criteria most of Tuesday, but may
exceed criteria again in the evening.
