A very strong storm system spinning over the California coast will
bring some interesting weather to the South Plains area during the
next 36 hours as it moves to a location near Las Vegas, NV by 12Z
Sunday and to northeastern New Mexico by the end of the day
tomorrow. Mid to upper level short wave ridging over the forecast
area this afternoon will give way to backing and increasing flow as
heights fall ahead of the upper low. At the surface tonight, the
cold air mass that has been in place across the forecast area will
get replaced by a warm and relatively humid one as a warm front
lifts northward across the forecast area courtesy of increasing and
robust low level warm and moist advection. Narrowing T/Td spreads
will through the evening will support the formation of advection fog
with the best chances of said fog being across the South Plains
counties. Some of that fog will probably become dense, although with
lack of clarity on timing and areal extent will hold off issuing a
Dense Fog Advisory at this time.

As the upper low approaches the Four Corners tomorrow morning,
stratus will hold on tight across most of the forecast area as low
level flow will remain backed toward due south. However, winds off
the deck should remain veered enough to southwest to see some
erosion of the stratus field from the west during the afternoon.
This will eventually set up a dryline by early afternoon with a
Pacific cold front expected to sweep across New Mexico as the upper
low moves eastward along the New Mexico/Colorado line. Increasingly
strong south winds will continue to pump rich but shallow low level
moisture northward, and once the deep lift from the approaching low
and its attendant 130 kt upper level jet in combination with the low
level forcing of the cold front overcome the capping inversion,
convective initiation on the High Plains is expected. That is likely
to come in a window between 21Z and 00Z and likely west of I-27. How
far south that convection is able to extend will be in large part
due to how far south the strong, deep ascent is able to reach. For
now, models continue to paint areas east of the Interstate and north
of TX-114 as the best chance to see storms. Convective instability
is expected to be fairly modest, i.e., generally less than 750 J/kg,
and with the strong vertical shear, maintaining a healthy balance
for severe storms, particularly hail and tornado will likely be
difficult. Severe wind gusts remain favored, in large part because
the underlying forecast wind speeds will already be approaching
or in at least advisory levels. Finally, a synoptic, gradient high
wind event is expected with a strong 80 kt mid-level jet nosing
in immediately behind the cold front and supported by surface
pressure rises of 8-10 mb per three hours. Will maintain the watch
as is for now rather than upgrading to warning at this time,
mainly as there as still some slight adjustments that could be
made for timing and with the bulk of the event to occur from late
second period deep into third period.

The High Wind Watch will extend eastward to include our far eastern
column of counties starting at 0Z Monday.

Any storms that remain in the area past 0Z will quickly move to our
east as a squall line. With background winds nearing or exceeding
high wind criteria and winds near 700 mb greater than 65 kt, any
storms that move across the area (mostly areas off the Caprock) will
be capable of producing wind gusts nearing or perhaps exceeding 70
mph. As the storms move east of the area, winds will remain elevated
through the first half of the night as we will struggle to decouple
from a 50+ kt jet max. Therefore, a high wind watch will remain
valid through 8Z (2 AM) Monday. With winds remaining elevated behind
the front, a wind advisory may be needed after the watch (then
warning) expires. The upper low mentioned in the short-term should
be centered northeast of Kansas by early Monday morning, which will
help to decrease the low-level jet max over our region. With the
upper low well to our northeast, upper flow will become
southwesterly going into Monday afternoon. This will bring breezy
downslope winds to the region, helping to dry and warm the CWA,
bringing elevated fire weather concerns to the area. With the
pattern not changing much, warm and windy conditions will persist
through Tuesday, bringing additional fire weather concerns.

A shortwave trough will move to our north Wednesday, driving a weak
cold front through the Southern Plains. This will bring a brief cool
down for the day on Wednesday. Behind this shortwave, a larger
trough / low will enter the west coast. The NBM continues to
introduce POPs over the area for the day on Thursday. At this point,
precipitation chances look rather low because surface winds are
either light or southwesterly ahead of the trough. Therefore, not
much moisture advection will occur. For now, we will allow the NBM
POPs ride as they are sub-25%. GKendrick

Expect IFR to LIFR ceilings/visibility most of the overnight
through mid-morning Sunday at KPVW and KLBB due to low stratus
ceilings and fog. Fog is not expected to be an issue at KCDS
though MVFR to IFR ceilings should be expected overnight through
mid-morning Sunday as well. Strong west-southwest winds will
begin to envelop our area from west to east beginning late Sunday
morning and gradually increase through the afternoon and evening
hours. Blowing dust will reduce visibility at times, especially at
KPVW and KLBB. Guidance has backed off thunderstorm chances for
KPVW and KLBB for late afternoon and evening, but fast moving
strong to severe thunderstorms may be in the vicinity of those two
terminals late in the day, with better chances at KCDS.

This Hazardous Weather Outlook is for the South Plains, Rolling
Plains, and the far Southern Texas Panhandle.

.DAY ONE...Tonight.

Widespread fog is expected on the Caprock overnight. Fog is expected
to become dense across central and western portions of the South
Plains where a Dense Fog Advisory is in effect through 9 AM. Travel
could become hazardous especially in areas of dense fog where
visibility will be reduced to 1/4 mile or less.

.DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN...Sunday through Friday.

High winds are expected across much of the region on Sunday
afternoon. A High Wind Watch remains in effect for much of the far
Southern Texas Panhandle, the South Plains, and much of the Rolling
Plains. This Watch will include the entire are starting Sunday
evening through 2 AM Monday.  High winds may result in blowing dust
and near-critical fire weather conditions.

Thunderstorms, some potentially severe, are possible late Sunday
afternoon and evening along and east of the I-27/US-87 corridor. The
main threat from these thunderstorms will be the potential for
damaging wind gusts.

Elevated to near critical fire weather conditions will continue
Monday through Thursday due to breezy winds and low relative
humidity values.
