.SHORT TERM...  (Through Late Tuesday Afternoon)

The location of the west-east oriented backdoor cold front is a bit
difficult to discern early this morning, but is likely near the I-70
corridor as of 0700 UTC. The boundary continues to slowly ooze
equatorward, with pressure rises observed just to the north in parts
of northeast Missouri and west-central Illinois.

By mid morning, the front is expected to stall out across far
southern sections of the area. Along and south of the front,
moderate instability is forecast with surface-based CAPE values
likely in the 1500-2000+ J/kg range. A midlevel impulse late this
afternoon is forecast to enter southwest Missouri, helping to
provide increasing forcing for ascent downstream and a bump up in
deep-layer shear. At least scattered thunderstorms are forecast
to develop by late afternoon, mainly in parts of southeast
Missouri. A few storms may be strong to severe, mainly in/around
Reynolds/Iron/Madison counties in southeast Missouri between 3-8
PM. Large hail is the main threat with steep midlevel lapse rates
and ample CAPE within the hail-growth zone. Locally heavy rainfall
is also a threat in these same locations due to precipitable
water values above 1.50" (~95th percentile of climatology) and
deep warm cloud depths. The latest HREF localized probability-
matched mean also shows the potential well, with spots of 2-3" of
rain.

Weakening convection is forecast after dusk this evening as
instability begins to wane nocturnally. However, the coverage of
precipitation is expected to increase late this evening into the
overnight hours as a stronger midlevel shortwave trough approaches
from the west. This induces a surface low to track through the
bootheel of Missouri into the lower Ohio Valley through early
Tuesday. Mid/upper level forcing for ascent also increases across
the mid-Mississippi Valley due to enhanced divergence beneath the
right-entrance region of a jet streak. The end result should be
widespread, persistent light to occasionally moderate rainfall
with a few embedded thunderstorms on the southeastern flank of the
precipitation shield. The widespread rain will move from
west/southwest to east/northeast late tonight into Tuesday
morning before it departs. Rainfall totals of 0.50-0.75" are
forecast through Tuesday morning, which will be beneficial given
most of the area being quite dry since the beginning of
meteorological spring. The axis of higher totals are a bit
uncertain, with some of the CAMs (HRRR/RAP) focusing more into
southeast Missouri and southwest Illinois. However, the track of
the shortwave trough argues for a further northwest placement,
more in line with the GFS/ECMWF and other CAM guidance (FV3/ARW).

The other noticeable change for today is the much cooler
temperatures for areas north of the boundary. The combination of
persistent low stratus and east/northeast surface winds will help
yield low diurnal ranges with respect to temperatures. Highs are
only forecast to reach the low 60s to low 70s for much of the
area. The exception is far southern counties where upper 70s to
near 80 degrees are likely near or just south of the cold front
this afternoon. Tuesday will also be on the cool side, with mid
60s to low 70s forecast for much of the region. Coolest locations
are likely to be in southeast Missouri and southwest Illinois
where the low stratus won't exit until around 2100 UTC.

.LONG TERM...  (Tuesday Night through Sunday)

(Tuesday Night - Thursday)

Dry and tranquil weather is forecast for the middle of the work week
as a surface ridge is draped from the Great Lakes into the mid-
Mississippi Valley. A subtle backdoor cold front is forecast to move
through at least parts of the region late Tuesday night into
early Wednesday, but is expected to pass through dry. The GFS
shows some light rain shower activity, but the percentage of total
members from the grand ensemble showing measurable rainfall
within this time frame is quite low (10-20%). A further inspection
shows nearly all of those are GEFS members. Given that the
GFS/GEFS has a wet bias and has little/no support from the EPS/CMCE
membership, left the forecast dry for Tuesday night and
Wednesday.

After a seasonably cool night Tuesday night, moderating temperatures
are expected as highs get back to near or slightly above normal for
mid/late May. There is some uncertainty on both the strength of the
backdoor cold front and how far west it gets on Wednesday.
Regardless, there should be some type of gradient from east to west,
with cooler values across the river into Illinois and warmest
temperatures further to the west in central Missouri.

(Thursday Night - Sunday)

Ensemble guidance remains in good agreement showing a strong
midlevel shortwave trough moving across the Upper Midwest into the
Great Lakes Thursday night into Friday. What has changed a bit is
the timing, generally about 6-12 hours later compared to a couple of
days ago. This in turn means a slower passage of the cold front
through our area, more in the Friday/Friday night time frame. The
slower cold frontal passage has a couple of ramifications, including
higher PoPs/chances of showers and thunderstorms due to more
time for low-level moisture return and associated instability
ahead of the front. In addition, Friday's forecast highs have
been warmed by several degrees, with strong low-level warm air
advection ahead of the boundary. Friday looks like it probably
will be the warmest day of the week now, with highs in the mid 70s
to low 80s. Behind the front, a return to below normal
temperatures is in store as mean 850-hPa temperatures on the
GEFS/EPS drop back closer to +5C. High temperatures next weekend
are likely to be in the 70s, with lows Saturday night in the upper
40s to mid 50s. If the timing of the surface ridge is favorable
Saturday night, wouldn't be surprised to see some mid 40s across
parts of the CWA.

Precipitation trends are the most challenging part of this TAF
package. From a large scale perspective there is at least a chance
of showers and a few thunderstorms for the entire period, however
for specific points like the terminals it is hard to gage when
the impacts will occur. In the short term I think KCOU/KJEF and
KUIN will see some showers overnight. Otherwise stratus will
become widespread overnight resulting in flight conditions
lowering to MVFR and IFR. The stratus will persist through the end
of the valid TAF period.
