.SHORT TERM... (Through Late Sunday Night)
Issued at 335 AM CDT Sat Mar 25 2023

Light rain within the deformation zone is moving predominantly west
to east early this morning across northeast Missouri and will
continue across west-central Illinois through mid morning. There
have already been some sporadic reports of snow mixing in with the
rain upstream across west-central and northwest Missouri. Given the
deepening nature of the system as a whole, and with temperatures
within the boundary layer cooling more nocturnally, the expectation
is for the rain in parts of northeast Missouri and west-central
Illinois to at least mix with snow, if not changeover for an hour or
two before ending later this morning. With temperatures at least a
couple of degrees above freezing and a warm/wet ground, no
accumulations are expected. If any were to occur, they should be
confined to elevated/grassy surfaces.

This system will depart the area quickly, with the surface low by
midday already nearing Lake Huron. Decreasing cloudiness is forecast
in its wake, with much if not the entire area seeing at least some
partial sunshine by this afternoon. The sunshine will help
temperatures warm up into the 50s across the bi-state region. For
many locations, this afternoon's readings will be about 10 degrees
warmer than yesterday.

The first in a series of mid/upper level disturbances will move
across the mid-Missouri Valley late tonight. At the surface, an area
of low pressure is forecast to move eastward across far southern
Iowa Sunday morning into north-central Indiana by early evening. To
the south/southeast of this low, a warm front will move across the
bi-state area. There may be some shower activity associated with
this boundary, but activity should stay scattered in nature due to a
lack of stronger forcing aloft. After the passage of the warm front,
surface winds veer to the southwest, which should allow temperatures
to rebound into the 60s for east central and southeast Missouri as
well as southwest Illinois. Some upper 60s, and possibly even some
highs near 70 degrees, are expected in southeast Missouri where the
trailing cold front won't pass through until mid/late afternoon.

By Sunday evening, a stronger and more southerly midlevel shortwave
trough begins to approach southwest Missouri. Forcing for ascent
downstream of this feature, along with weak low-level moisture
convergence and enhanced divergence beneath the right-entrance region
of an upper-level jet streak across Illinois is expected to yield
more widespread light rain Sunday night. This will be another
cold rain, with temperatures falling through the 40s into the
upper 30s. A few wet snowflakes cannot be ruled out at the tail
end of the precipitation on the northern edge of the precipitation
shield, but probabilities for any measurable snow at this time
are minimal (below 10% from the total membership of the
GEFS/EPS/CMCE).

.LONG TERM... (Monday through Friday)

(Monday - Tuesday)

Model guidance begins to diverge by Monday night into Tuesday with
the track/strength/timing of yet another shortwave trough embedded
within the zonal flow aloft. The deterministic GFS is on the slower,
more amplified range of solutions while the ECMWF is quicker and
weaker with the shortwave. Low chance PoPs are broad brushed from
Monday evening through early Tuesday morning for right now, but as
timing differences resolve themselves, PoPs may increase in time.
That is because if you look at 24-hour probabilities for
measurable precipitation ending 0Z Wednesday, they are in the
50-70 percent range on both the GEFS and EPS.

Precipitation type with this system also should be a cold rain.
However, similar to its predecessors, cannot rule out a few wet
snowflakes in northern sections of the area.

(Tuesday Night - Wednesday)

There is high confidence in a cool, dry midweek period as
mid/upper level flow on all 4 of the WPC mean 500-hPa height
clusters are northwesterly or have a ridge moving into the
Mississippi Valley at 0Z Thursday. At the surface, GEFS/EPS have a
seasonably strong surface high (nearing the 95th percentile of
climatology) moving across the area as well Tuesday night into
early Wednesday.

Lows Tuesday night/Wednesday morning in the upper 20s to low 30s,
though those values could be slightly lower or higher depending on
the exact timing of the surface ridge. Probabilities for a freeze
are high from the grand ensemble, generally in the 60-90 percent
range, supporting the current forecast.

(Wednesday Night - Friday)

We are still anticipating a transition back to a warmer, more active
weather pattern heading toward late next work week as a longwave
trough digs into the western CONUS. Uncertainty however with the
specifics of how this trough evolves however is high as evidenced by
the high spread in the 500-hPa height clusters. About a quarter of
ensemble members are faster with the trough as it passes through the
Mississippi Valley on Friday whereas other flavors of solutions
include the trough remaining out in the desert southwest to a more
dominant northern jet stream and zonal/northwest flow over our
region. This time frame (particularly Thursday night - Friday)
remains a period of interest however as the pattern at least has a
chance to be conducive for severe weather (further supported by CSU
machine-learning probabilities) and/or heavy rainfall.

Most of the precipitation is falling as rain, but the exception is
parts of northeast Missouri and west-central Illinois (including
KUIN) where snow is being observed, or at least a rain snow mix.
IFR visibilities are possible where it is snowing steadily.

IFR ceilings are forecast to lift and then scatter out this
morning, with VFR conditions favored by late morning at KCOU/KJEF
and around midday for KUIN and the metro terminals. Gusty
northwest winds will subside late this afternoon/early this
evening as a surface ridge of high pressure moves across the bi-
state area. By late tonight, winds are forecast to turn out of the
south/southeast.
