Santa Barbara south coast and adjacent Santa Ynez mountains this
evening, with gusts of 35 to 45 mph being observed. If the winds
get any stronger or more widespread, will issue a wind advisory
for this area. Increasing onshore flow combined with an eddy
circulation will likely bring a return of low clouds and patchy
fog for most coasts,valleys, and northern interior areas later
tonight into Monday morning, with slow clearing trends near the
coast in the afternoon. Patchy drizzle can't be ruled out,
especially for LA county.
A strong inside slider trough will support increased northerly
winds Sunday, likely reaching advisory levels at least for
southwest Santa Barbara County, possibly extending to Central
Coast or interior mountains by late afternoon or evening, with
warning level gusts becoming likely (50-70 percent chance) for
interior mountains including the I-5 cooridor and the Antelope
Valley Monday into Monday night. Damaging wind gusts of 60 to 75
mph is the early estimate for the interior mountains and Antelope
Valley, where a high wind watch is in effect. With strong upper
level wind support (90-100 knots at 500 mb, 50-60 knots at 700 mb)
and associated mountain wave activity along with strong cold air
advection, we could see significant and widespread impacts across
the mountains and Antelope Valley Monday into Monday night,
including widespread dust storm activity, downed
trees/powerlines, and power outages. Earlier GFS MOS guidance had
particularly strong readings for Lancaster at 46 knots on Monday,
along with Daggett at 54 knots. A high wind watch may also need to
be expanded into Southwest Santa Barbara south coast and western
Santa Ynez mountains for Monday. Peak gusts of 30 to 50 mph will
be common in most other coastal/valley areas. By Monday evening,
we could see a fairly strong northerly wind event into the Santa
Clarita Valley/San Fernando Valley, and west side of the LA basin.
Downed trees and power outages are possible with winds of this
magnitude. The close pass of the trough will deepen the marine
layer rapidly Sunday night into Monday, with drizzle or light
showers likely across much of Los Angeles County and possibly into
Ventura County. Most of these areas will likely see less than a
tenth of an inch of rain, although eastern LA County foothills
could be an exception.

The marine layer will likely be ripped apart by the strong winds
and colder air by Monday afternoon, leading to mostly sunny skies
save for lingering low clouds butted up against the north facing
mountain slopes. Mainly orographic rain and snow showers are
likely at some point Sunday evening into early morning across the
northern mountains, including the I-5 cooridor. Low confidence in
how quickly snow levels fall late Sunday into early Monday. A
dusting to two inches of snow is possible above 3500 feet, with
highest accumulations above 5000 feet. There is a 40-50 percent
chance of a dusting to one inch of now on the I-5 near Tejon Pass.
Temperatures Monday will be considerably colder than today with
widespread highs in the mid 50s to mid 60s.

Significant differences in timing and magnitude of a ridge with a
possible embedded trough in our region or to the south leads to
poor forecast confidence later in the week. Dry weather is the
most likely outcome, with some amount of continuing offshore flow.
After a possible late season frost Tuesday and Wednesday mornings
for some coastal valleys and interior coastal areas, we may be
(finally!) looking at a significant warm up. The current forecast
calls for widespread highs in the 70s and even approaching 80
degrees in spots heading into next weekend. However, there is a
20-30 percent chance that 80 degree temperatures would be more
widespread, especially for coasts and valleys of LA and Ventura
County. The last time downtown Los Angeles was above 80 degrees,
was December 25th of 2022 or over three months ago!
This warmup would kick snow melt into high gear across the
mountains (where significant snow pack exists) and lead to
continued elevated flow of mountain creeks and streams.

Low to moderate confidence in remaining TAFs due to large
uncertainty in arrival timing and hgt of cigs. Arrival of cigs
may be off by +/- up to 3 hours. There is a 30 percent chance of
no cigs for KSBA, KOXR, KCMA, and KVNY.
KLAX...Moderate confidence in TAF. MVFR cigs may arrive between
09Z-12Z. There is a 40 percent chance of east winds of 8 kt
09Z-16Z and a 30 percent chance up to 10 kt.
KBUR...Moderate confidence in TAF. MVFR cigs could arrive anytime
between 09Z-15Z.

High confidence in Small Craft Advisory (SCA) level winds
continuing across the waters from the Central Coast to the
western Santa Barbara Channel through Sunday afternoon. Winds may
weaken some tonight into Sunday morning but are expected to pick
back up in strength in the afternoon. By early Sunday evening
winds will likely strengthen further and SCA level conditions will
expand into the waters adjacent to LA and Orange Counties
(strongest west of Catalina Island). These gusty winds will
persist through Monday then gradually diminish Tuesday into
Wednesday. For the outer waters from the Central Coast to San
Nicolas Island, there is a high chance of Gale force gusts Sunday
night through Monday night, and for the waters closer to shore
there is a 50-60 percent chance of Gales, highest along the
Central Coast and in the Santa Barbara Channel. Gale Watches have
been issued for all the waters. In addition to wind, large and
hazardous steep seas over 10 feet are expected to develop across
the outer waters Sunday night and last through at least Tuesday.
