.SYNOPSIS...05/200 AM.

There will be gusty north to northeast winds this morning. Today
will be the warmest day of the week as afternoon high
temperatures trend warmer under a ridge. There is a slight chance
of light rain Wednesday evening and Thursday across the central
coast. It will cool back to near normal by Friday, before another
round of Santa Ana winds arrive next weekend.

.SHORT TERM (TDY-THU)...05/837 AM.

***UPDATE***

The latest observational data and model guidance indicate that
the forecast is well on-track, and no changes have been made to
the ongoing forecast.

***From Previous Discussion***

Chamber of Commerce day today as a 582 dam ridge sits atop of Srn
CA along with 4 to 5 mb of offshore flow from both the N and E.
While the offshore flow will generate some N to NE canyon winds
there will only be isolated advisory level gusts due to the
complete lack of upper support. Skies will be mostly sunny under
the ridge. The biggest talking point of the day will be the max
temps which will end up 10 to 15 degrees above normal. Cst and Vly
max temps will end up mostly in the upper 70s to mid 80s.

The warming will mostly end on Wednesday. The ridge will be
flattened and pushed to the east by an approaching low to the NW.
More importantly there will be strong onshore trends which will
lead to much weaker offshore flow. There will likely be no stratus
in the morning since there still be be no onshore flow nor a
marine inversion, but there is a 30 percent chc something will
develop from the lift of the approaching trof across the Central
Coast. The trof is moving a little quicker than previously fcst
and is now expected to move through the state Wednesday afternoon.
It will bring an increase in clouds and by afternoon will switch
the light offshore flow to 1 to 3 mb onshore both to the N and E.
The bulk of the dynamics assoc with this trof will be north of SLO
county and while light rain is possible in the afternoon and
evening the only areas north of Cambria will likely see some
light rain. If rain does fall it will likely not exceed a tenth of
an inch. Most areas will cool 4 to 8 degrees but the Central Coast
will see 8 to 12 degree of cooling. Since the lower hgts will not
affect the Antelope Vly until later in the afternoon and the
switch to onshore flow will give them some downslope winds from
the west the temps there will rise 2 to 4 degrees.

There will likely be some north slope showers during the evening
and overnight in the wake of the trof. Snow levels will be well
above the major passes and precip totals will be very light. The
continued onshore flow and the development of an eddy will more
likely than not bring some low clouds to the LA csts and the
Central Coast.

Since the trof will now be well east of the area on Thursday there
will be no threat of rain and aside from the morning low clouds
and north slope clouds skies will turn partly cloudy and then
mostly sunny. Cool air behind the trof and onshore flow will bring
4 to 8 degrees of cooling to the vlys and 12 to 18 degrees of
cooling to the interior. The csts which had the big cool down
Wednesday will see limited cooling or even a touch of warming.
Despite the dramatic cooling almost all areas will end up a degree
or two above normals.

.LONG TERM (FRI-MON)...05/309 AM.

Dry NW flow sets up ahead of an approaching ridge on Friday. The
cool air behind the trof will likely mix out the marine inversion
and eliminate the threat of stratus. But there is a 30 percent chc
that some coastal sections will see low clouds through mid
morning. A decent north gradient sets up and this along with some
decent upper support could set up a decent N wind event with high
rez mdls support advisory level gusts in the mtns and xtnding into
the vlys and Malibu. Otherwise a cooler day with max temps down
to near normals.

Ensemble means are in good agreement with deterministic solutions
during the weekend. All signs point to a building ridge extending
up from the SW. Hgts will reach 578 dam on Sat and then 583 dam on
Sun. Mdls are hinting at 6 to 7 mb of offshore flow developing
from the north as the sfc high sets up a little further to the N
and W of its usual Great Basin location. It looks like there will
only be 2 to 3 mb of offshore flow from the east so at this time
it looks like the offshore wind event will be more of a northerly
one rather than NE. If these gradients do pan out advisory level
gusts will be likely for most of the mtns from SBA to LA counties
as well as the SBA south coast and perhaps the Santa Clarita Vly.
Max temps will jump 2 to 4 degrees each day and looking at
historical data this may be an under estimate.

Mdls begin to disagree on Monday with some solutions breaking away
form the warming trend and others supporting one more day of
warming. Most solutions support a continuation of the northerly
winds.

Around 18Z at KLAX, there was a surface based inversion with a
top at 1500 feet with a maximum temperature of 22 C.

High confidence in VFR TAFs.

KLAX...High confidence in TAF. There is a 20 percent chance of
some marine clouds late tonight. There is a 30% chance of an east
wind component of 5 kts through 17Z Tues.
KBUR...High confidence in TAF.

.MARINE...05/1004 AM.

For the Outer Waters, moderate to high confidence in forecast.
Winds are expected to remain below Small Craft Advisory (SCA)
levels through Wednesday morning. However, SCA level seas are
expected into Saturday, with a dip below advisory levels possible
this afternoon. There is a 50% chance of SCA level winds
returning to the waters south of Point Conception as early as
Wednesday afternoon. Then, winds will expand across all the outer
waters overnight Wednesday and continue through Friday, with a 40%
chance of Gale Force winds Thursday afternoon into Friday
morning. There is a 30-40% chance of SCA winds continuing through
Saturday with a brief decrease below advisory levels possible
Friday night.

For the Inner Waters north of Point Sal, moderate confidence in
forecast. Seas are expected to be at or near SCA level through
early this morning. However, there is a 40-50% chance of SCA
level seas returning tonight and lasting through Friday. Winds
are expected to be below advisory levels through Thursday
morning with a 30-40% chance of winds increasing to SCA levels
Thursday afternoon into early Friday morning.

For the Inner Waters south of Point Conception, moderate to high
confidence in forecast. There is a 15% chance of SCA level NE
winds from Ventura south to Malibu this morning. There is a
30-40% chance of NW SCA level winds across the western portion of
the Santa Barbara Channel on Wednesday during the
afternoon/evening hours, and the western portions of all the
southern inner waters during the same hours on Thursday. Late
Thursday night into Friday morning, there is a 20% chance of
strong SCA level N to NE winds across the eastern portions of the
waters.

.BEACHES...05/1000 AM.

A long period NW swell (17-19 seconds) will result in high surf
of 8 to 11 feet to west- and northwest-facing Central Coast
beaches this morning. Surf may subside briefly this afternoon
before the next system of long period NW swell (18-21 seconds)
arrives tonight and lasts through Thursday.

Peak wave heights will occur tonight through Thursday. Expect 10
to 14 feet for the Central Coast beaches, 4 to 7 feet with local
sets to 8 feet for Ventura County beaches, and elevated surf for
LA County beaches. Surf heights will be highest across west and
northwest facing beaches. Due to low astronomical tides, coastal
flooding is not expected.
